1 EASY rider Fall/Winter 2003 In This Issue: TDM Grant Program, Recent Events New Shuttle Services Riki Rideshare, Reading Schedules 101, Where You ll Find Us Welcome our new Caring Commuter Merchants Construction Zone LIGHT RAIL FARES One-Way $ 1.10 Senior Citizens/Passengers with Disabilities River Line Surges Toward Completion South Jersey s newest mass transit service is set to begin passenger service February 15, The commuter light rail line has been under construction since groundbreaking in May of 2000, and is in the final stages of testing and the refining of operations. When completed, commuters and travelers will be connected to the NJ TRANSIT Northeast Corridor Rail Line in Trenton and to the PATCO Speedline in Camden. The 20- station River Line provides a vital link between the two rail systems and connects with 33 bus routes along its 34 mile expanse. This connectivity with other mass transit greatly expands the ability of many commuters to reach their destinations without using personal vehicles. Conceivably, a traveler could board the River Line, ride to Trenton, and take the Northeast Corridor Rail line to New York City or the Newark Airport without setting foot in a car. Going to Philadelphia? Transfer to PATCO at the Walter Rand Transportation Center in Camden and visit Philadelphia without worrying about where to park. Commuters will also find connector shuttles serving the rail stations to assist them in getting to their destination. Cross County Connection has been working closely with Burlington and Camden counties in providing additional links for commuters traveling to employment sites not currently served by transit. The Burlington County BurLink system will launch four additional routes on January 5, 2004, and Camden County will provide assistance to employers seeking to shuttle employees from the rail stations to worksites in Camden City as well as to suburban office parks. Fourteen of the twenty stations will offer parking, and parking is free with the exception of the Trenton station. $.50 Monthly Pass $ Riders can purchase tickets from ticket vending machines (TVM s) located on the platforms at each station, and at the Trenton station and at the Walter Rand Transportation Center in Camden. Oneway tickets will be validated at the platform before boarding. Monthly passes will not need to be validated. Cross County Connection will be working with our partners at NJ TRANSIT, Burlington and Camden Counties, as well as employers along the route, to encourage the use of the River Line as a convenient, cost effective, stress free way to travel. 4 Riki: With winter approaching, do you have any suggestions for handling the roads? Clueless in the cold Dear Clueless, What can you do to get ready for the imminent glaciers on the roads? There s the obvious: move to Hawaii. Then there s the less obvious, but much simpler way to prepare for winter woes: don t drive, let someone else do it for you. Easier said than done? Wrong. Cross County Connection can hook you up with other drivers in our rideshare program or, if that doesn t tickle your fancy, NJ Transit can be counted on to get you from here to there in record time. Think about the road rage that will never be! Rather than worrying about shoveling out of a snow ditch, you can curl up with a good book. You can thank me later! Riki Riki: Caring Commuter Program what s in it for me? All about Me Dear All about Me, You ll be happy to know that the Caring Commuter Program is all about you. It s a program comprised of discounts to restaurants, amusement centers, and you-name-it offered to its members for choosing alternative modes of transportation as little as twice a week. Who knew cutting down on congestion could also cut down on your monthly budget! Any shrewd shopper should take advantage of this deal by calling our office at (856) Saving you money, Riki Riki Have a question for Riki? her at: ccctma@ transportationchoices.com, or call and leave a message in her voic . GETTING around Reading Schedules 101 Choose your direction of travel and look at the section of the schedule based on the day of your travel weekdays (Monday through Friday) or weekends (Saturday, Sunday and holidays). Find the location you are starting from If deciphering information on a timetable on the timetable. On bus schedules, the seems like a foreign language, here s a tutorial time points represent major stops, but to have you reading Greek in no time! buses also stop at locations along the route between time points. On train schedules, every station is listed, but trains will only stop at a station when a time is listed. Commuter News You Can Use Choose the start time of your trip. On NJ Transit bus and PATCO Speedline timetables, read down. On NJ Transit, SEPTA, and Amtrak train timetables, read across. On shuttle schedules, it may vary, but a good rule of thumb is read down. Continue to your destination and the arrival time will be noted. Be sure to read any special footnotes because they ll provide you with important information on your route.
