1 Sector 112 Community Newsletter August 2016 R I C H M O N D P O L I C E D E P A R T M E N T F I R S T P O L I C E P R E C I N C T Q S T R E E T Greetings to all residents and business owners that reside within Sector 112. The focus areas for the next 28-day cycle, which runs form August 2 through August 29 are North of the River (Shockoe Bottom/Shockoe Slip/ and Belle Isle) and Oakgrove neighborhoods. Our sector experienced one Aggravated Assault/ Shooting so far this focus period that was reported in Hillside Court, and there are warrants for the suspect. Oakgrove recorded five residential burglaries last month, all occurring during daytime hours. We deployed our dayshift directed patrol units and bike unit to the area and recorded over 140 hours of bike, foot, and vehicle patrol, and thankfully, the crimes stopped although there have been no arrests at this time. Motor vehicle thefts in the sector have gone down; however, we still find a majority of the vehicles were left running, had keys left inside, or were left unlocked. Please don t make it easy for thieves to take your valuable property! Our high visibility focus in the Belle Island/Tredegar Street corridor has continued to pay off as we have seen a dramatic decrease in thefts from motor vehicles! We ask that park goers stay vigilant because officers checking Tredegar Street parking lots have found several cars unlocked and over 50 locked, but with phones, wallets, pocketbooks and computers left in plain view on seats and floorboards. The crowded parks and parking lots attract thieves who are looking to make a quick grab and dash while your out enjoying the island. Please leave expensive electronics at home, secure wallets, purses, and other valuables in your trunk and LOCK YOUR DOORS! Locking your doors but leaving your windows partially down or your valuables out in the open isn t much of a deterrent. Sector officers are patrolling these areas, and we are trying out some proactive initiatives to catch the thieves preying on car owners, but in the end the best defense is making your car less of a target.

5 Crime Prevention Tips Robberies: ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings DON T RESIST. No property is worth your life Walk in well-lit areas and with others when possible Burglaries: Notify police of suspicious people in your neighborhood Obtain the best possible description without jeopardizing your safety When you leave home make sure that the doors and windows are locked If you go out of town for an extended period, notify First Precinct at so we can check on your house when you are gone.. Larcenies: Don t leave valuable items in plain view Place items in the trunk of your car Placing your outdoor items (such as lawnmowers, tools etc.) in sheds with locks Turn on exterior lights at night Motor Vehicle Thefts: NEVER leave the car running while unattended Invest in an anti-theft device, such as the club to deter thefts Narcotics/ Quality of Life Concerns: If you believe that crimes of this nature are taking place either in a general area or a specific location don t hesitate to call the police. Drug dealing brings an element of danger to your neighborhood. Unaddressed, these crimes can significantly reduce your quality of life.
