2 ABOUT The inaugural Chrono Kristin Armstrong is a UCI 1.2* Individual Time Trial, the only professional event of this caliber in the United States in The event will be held on the afternoon of Friday, July 14th at the picturesque Ste. Chapelle Winery in Caldwell, Idaho (approximately 30 miles west of downtown Boise). Cyclists eligible to participate in the 2017 Chrono include professional men and women, U23 men, and junior men and women. As a precursor to the Chrono on the same day and at the same venue, the Kristin Armstrong Foundation Gran Fondo will be hosted by 3-time Olympic Gold Medalist Kristin Armstrong, and held in honor of the former Ore-Ida and Hewlett-Packard Women s Challenge, which made its mark in Idaho between 1984 and 2002 as one of the most lucrative and longstanding stage races in women s cycling history. This non-competitive ride will cover 70 miles/kms, offering recreational, amateur, and professional cyclists the opportunity to participate side-by-side with professionals and legends of the sport, all in celebration of the sport of cycling. *The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is the world s governing body in the sport of bicycle racing. The UCI classifies races according to a rating scale. A higher rated race will result in the successful riders receiving more world ranking points. The UCI 1.2 rating designates the race as a one-day race (1); and stature, difficulty, and eligibility for participation category (2) out of a possible 3. VISION Showcase the discipline of time trialing at a world-class level, while engaging and educating fans, spectators and cyclists on the history of what makes the time trial live up to its moniker as The Race of Truth. And to bring cyclists at all levels together to ride in celebration of the joy one can find while simply riding a bike. MISSION To continue to develop and experience the discipline of time trialing by creating opportunities to host worldclass competition in the United States; to celebrate the grit, determination and athleticism of the fastest riders on bikes; and to grow the life-long sport of cycling while showcasing the beautiful state of Idaho. 3 GENERAL EVENT INFORMATION The Chrono Kristin Armstrong is a world-class individual time trial on a closed circuit through the scenic Snake River Valley appellation, Idaho s premiere wine region. The athletes will conquer a course that includes rolling hills and long straightaways that will challenge their stamina and focus. The finish is a tight turn into the picturesque grounds of the Ste. Chapelle Winery; inspired by the famed Ste. Chapelle medieval gothic chapel in France. The goal in the time trial is to clock the fastest time over a specific distance. Riders start individually at one-minute intervals. The distance of the course is 24 kilometers in length (15 miles) for the professional men and women, U23 men and junior men. The junior women will race on a 15 kilometers course. In a time trial there is nowhere to hide, no one to draft behind; it s just you, your thoughts, your bike and a ticking clock. 4 GENERAL EVENT INFORMATION The Kristin Armstrong Foundation Gran Fondo will offer recreational cyclists the opportunity to pedal alongside some of the sport s greatest athletes and enjoy gracious hospitality at a post-ride lunch, before cheering on the world s best time trial cyclists as they vie for top spots in the inaugural Chrono Kristin Armstrong. gran fon do ɡˌ grän ˈfändō/ noun noun: gran fondo; plural noun: gran fondos; noun: granfondo; plural noun: granfondos 1. a long-distance road cycling event in which a large number of cyclists ride a marked route. It is a ride for the community and held in the spirit of celebrating the sport of cycling. Participants in the Gran Fondo will receive an event t-shirt, lunch, water bottle, and finisher gift. Proceeds from the Gran Fondo will go to the Kristin Armstrong Foundation, which works to provide access to sports for all kids. Chrono Kristin Armstrong
