2 Green Surfacing Sections of the Cycle Superhighway are marked with green paint these highlight sections where people cycling the Superhighway are likely to come into contact with walkers, drivers, or other modes. If you re driving, ensure you give way to people cycling on the Superhighway. If you re on a bike, be aware that this is where other people will be crossing your path. For drivers and pedestrians, remember to look out for people on bikes wherever you see a green surface. Be aware of the new priorities these are now marked by the green surfacing If you re cycling, driving or walking, look out for each other where the green surfacing is People cycling don t make as much noise as other modes if you need to make someone aware of you, use a bell or a friendly call
3 Side Roads and Other Non-Signalised Junctions Wherever the Cycle Superhighway meets side roads, there are new priorities. The green surfacing and give way markings on the minor road at a side road reinforce the priority for people cycling on the Superhighway. Drivers emerging from the minor road and entering from the major road should give way to someone on a bicycle. Care should be taken by anyone cycling or driving over these junctions. If you re on a bike, have a good look around especially behind you to see if anyone else is approaching the junction. If you re driving, make sure the junction is clear of people cycling before you enter or exit the side road. People cycling in the Superhighway have priority at side roads but make sure to check all around, especially behind before you cross If you re driving, ensure no one is cycling on the Superhighway before you enter or exit a side road Pay attention a good distance before the junction people cycling can travel faster than you think, especially downhill!
4 Bus Stops In most locations where the Cycle Superhighway passes a bus stop or shelter the track narrows and diverts around. The surfacing of these narrow sections is green. If you are approaching a bus stop or shelter on a bike you should slow your pace and make any waiting passengers aware of your presence. If you are confident that pedestrians are aware and they are not standing on or crossing the Superhighway you should continue past. If you are a pedestrian waiting for a bus or disembarking from a bus you should look around you carefully when moving around bus stops. Pedestrians should stand off the Cycle Superhighway when waiting and allow people on bike who are approaching pass before crossing. Be aware that if a bus is at or approaching the stop as there may be an increased flow of pedestrians If you are riding a bike use a bell or a friendly voice to alert pedestrians when approaching If you are waiting for or disembarking from a bus look both ways before crossing the Cycle Superhighway
5 Rejoining the Carriageway There are points along the route where people on bikes may either need to, or may choose to re-join the main carriageway. If you are travelling by bike you may not always be riding on the Cycle Superhighway. For example, where the route terminates or where you wish to make a turn that takes you off the route to continue your journey. You need to be aware of moving traffic when entering the flow of traffic and should slow down to a suitable speed, check the traffic, and enter the carriageway when it s appropriate to do so. If you are driving a car you need to be aware that at any point people on bikes may re-enter the flow of traffic. You should remain attentive to this possibility and accommodate this appropriately, providing space for the person on the bike. If you are riding a bike be aware that you may be directed on to the main carriageway and prepare for this in advance by checking over your shoulder If you are driving be aware of people who are ahead of you on bikes and consider the possibility they may need to move out into the carriageway
6 Bi-Directional Section When traveling by bike on the Cycle Superhighway you may come across sections that run in two directions on the same side of the main carriageway. If you are riding a bike, use these sections how you would use the road. Always stay left of the dotted line, when overtaking check for oncoming riders, and avoid cycling two abreast. If you are a pedestrian wanting to cross the Cycle Superhighway, you should check for people on bikes traveling from both directions before you cross. Look out for oncoming cycle traffic Always cycle to the left of the dotted line If you are riding a bike or are a pedestrian look around before crossing or overtaking
7 Shared Use Whatever your journey, you share it with people just like you. Shared use is simply where pedestrians and people on bikes can use the same area at the same time. It s important to take extra care in these areas and to be respectful of other users. If you re on your bike, slow your speed when approaching pedestrians. If you re traveling by foot, be aware that there might be people on bikes traveling behind and in front of you. Be aware of other users coming up behind you or in front of you Make yourself known by ringing your bell or simply saying hello as you pass by each other Slow your speed where and when necessary Where possible stick to the left
8 Diagonal Crossing Diagonal crossings are places where people on bikes can safely and easily cross junctions on their bikes. You re able to conveniently cross in one phase rather than the two that pedestrians may use. If you are riding a bike, when you arrive at the crossing press the button, wait until the green bike shows and then cross the road within the white lines. If you are driving a car be aware that there may be a separate crossing for pedestrians and people on bikes. Only proceed when the traffic light shows green for you. If you are riding a bike wait for the green bike signal before crossing. If you are driving a car be aware of people on bikes waiting to cross
9 Signalised Junction Signalised crossings are common where there s more likely to be people travelling both by bike and by foot, giving priority to both. Toucan crossings will display a green man and a green bike, signalling when it s safe for everyone to cross. If you are riding a bike or walking you can cross here safely when the signal permits you to do so. If you are driving, be aware that people on bikes may be crossing alongside pedestrians. Allow them comfortable space to do this. Be aware of those around you if sharing with other users Don t just rely on the signals: Look out for drivers who may not have seen the crossing lights change
10 Door Zones To prevent drivers from opening their doors onto oncoming cycle traffic, car door zones are in place where there is parking next to the Cycle Superhighway. If you re a driver, always check your mirrors for people on bikes before opening your car door and take extra care when stepping out of your car or when pulling away from the parking space. If you re on a bike, take extra care around parked cars. Look out for people opening their car door, standing or walking close to the Cycle Superhighway or for people driving away from the parking space. Cyclists Be aware of car doors opening into the Cycle Superhighway and cars leaving the parking space Drivers Look out for cycle traffic traveling close by before opening your car door or pulling away from the parking space All users should slow their speed to take into account other users manoeuvres.
11 Stanningley Bottom Where the Cycle Superhighway passes through Stanningley Bottom, the segregated route ends and is replaced with an area designed to reduce speeds through narrowing the lanes, reduced road markings and road signs, and a junction with roundels instead of traffic lights or roundabouts. These provide a combination of psychological measures to influence driver behaviour to establish an environment which takes the attention of drivers away from road markings and signage and reliance on signals and allows them to make their own decisions by reading the situation. This reduces speed without causing significant traffic delays. Take it slower through Stanningley Bottom it s safer for everyone and slower traffic moves through more smoothly Whether cycling or driving, make sure you re aware of where the Cycle Superhighway re-joins the road as it enters Stanningley Bottom
