Schaumburg is a vibrat commuity housig regioal destiatios for employmet, educatio, retail ad recreatio. It also is home to aroud 80,000 diverse residets who ejoy the safe eighborhoods. Traversig the Village is easy with a etwork of sceic trails ad other routes umatched i ortheast Illiois. Village residets ad visitors also beefit from some of the most cyclig-friedly policies ad programs i the coutry. This 2012 update to the Schaumburg Bikeways Pla itroduces ehacemets to the bikeways etwork. The pla icorporates the most recet atioal best practices to improve the safety of Schaumburg s roadways. It also recommeds the utilizatio of ehacemets that make it more comfortable ad coveiet to ride a bike. Ay comprehesive trasportatio pla recogizes that ifrastructure aloe is ot sufficiet. Durig the 1970 s the Village adopted a multi-modal approach to trasportatio plaig with the itegratio of bicyclig as oe of the key compoets to create a more livable commuity. This commitmet was reiforced i the curret Bikeways Pla (datig to 1999) ad the Comprehesive Gree Actio Pla. The Village prides itself o offerig a high quality of life, grouded i safe eighborhoods, excellet schools ad uiversities, commercial ceters, busiess parks, quiet residetial streets, ad service-orieted ad accessible muicipal govermet. Schaumburg s pledge to a comprehesive multi-modal trasportatio system is a critical uderpiig for the cotiued success of Schaumburg as a livable commuity, able to attract ew residets ad busiesses ad overall ivestmet for years to come. Schaumburg houses a diversity of uses icludig residetial, idustrial, office parks, tourism ad retail space which cotribute to the livability of the Village. From visioig to goal settig to etwork developmet to strategy review, Schaumburg cyclists provided critical oversight over all aspects of the pla developmet. A extesive array of public egagemet strategies was utilized to esure that the diverse eeds of village residets ad visitors were addressed. The followig summarizes the public egagemet activities that iform the update to Schaumburg s Bikeways Pla. The combied resposes were used as a represetatio of commuity goals, eeds ad desires. Sectio 3 of this pla outlies a collectio of ordiace ad prcedure ehacemets whose implemetatio will further ehace coditios for cyclig i Schaumburg. With older adults choosig to age i place, with youth seekig idepedece ad with the ever-icreasig cost of motorized travel, a complete active trasportatio etwork is ecessary to accommodate the diverse eeds of Schaumburg residets The Network Defied Schaumburg is a award-wiig commuity for cyclig. There are already more tha 80 miles of siged bike routes, a array of multi-use trails, ad bike parkig at key destiatios. The recommedatios i this pla build o the existig Bikeways Pla for Schaumburg ad the efforts uderway by the Schaumburg Park District, the Village of Schaumburg ad its Bikeways Advisory Committee. This pla was developed with residets ad commuity leaders to foster local livability goals. Because Schaumburg has oe the largest employmet bases i the metropolita area, major shoppig ceters ad sigificat ope spaces, recommedatios also address Schaumburg s role as a hub of regioal activity. The recommedatios i this pla coordiate with the existig bike pla i Hoffma Estates ad the regioal bike pla produced by Northwest Muicipal Coferece. The iteded users of the Schaumburg Bikeways etwork were asked about their priorities for destiatios ad routes. Coectig people to the places where they eat, lear, shop ad ejoy the outdoors is the priority. Puttig places first i the cosideratio of bikig improvemets will help itegrate sustaiable, efficiet, ad healthy livig ito residets daily activities. Sectio 2.2 provides a overview of the objectives established by the Bikeways Steerig Committee. Each objective sectio cotais a descriptio of the places (districts ad corridors) that ca be leveraged to achieve the stated goal. Volkeig Park/Schaumburg High School District Schaumburg High School is located adjacet to oe of the Village s largest parks. Istall bike parkig at key civic destiatios. Library Access: Immediately south of Schaumburg Road are several low-traffic local roadways with gaps i their existig bike laes. Completig these gaps will provide improved access to the public library located i the Tow Square district. Lakelad Drive: A short stretch of Lakelad Drive, west of Plum Grove Road, is missig bicycle facilities. Istallig bike laes will provide for cotiuatio of the bike lae etwork already i existece east of Plum Grove Road. The BAC will cotiue their moitorig ad oversight fuctio of a updated Schaumburg Bikeways Pla. Oe of the major resposibilities will be to work with Village staff to prioritize ad facilitate the chose educatio ad ecouragemet recommedatios.
