4 Ace & Deuce FAQ Is there a limit to the number of Ace and Deuce riders? Yes. Each group is limited to 100 riders. Do the Ace and Deuce groups ride together? No. On Saturday, the Ace riders will start first. Five minutes later the Deuce riders will start. And five minutes after the Deuce riders leave, the general Gran Fondo riders will start. When do I sign up? Now! Once the field limit of 100 riders is reached registration for that group will close. What time do I need to stage? 7:00 a.m. There will be three different colored bib numbers on Saturday and two on Sunday. Staging will be with your designated group by color of your bib number. What happens if I get dropped from the Peloton? Once you are off-the-back by a time gap of 1 minute, you may continue the ride, but you are no longer protected by the event motorcade and must obey all Rules of the Road. The neutral support vehicles will stay with the front group, so you will also be responsible for changing your own flat tire should you experience one. How will I know I m off the back by 1 minute? An event official will inform you that you have reached a time gap of 1 minute from the main Peloton. How do I register my team support person(s) so I can make sure my personal food & drinks get o the Feed Zone? Please have your team support person contact Chris Reed , chris.reed@medalistsports.com and he or she will receive instructions. Your support person will be required to sign a volunteer waiver in order to be allowed access to the Feed Zone. Team support cars may only park at the two designated Feed Zones. Feeding may not take place anywhere else! Should I deliver spare wheels to the wheel vehicle? No. A Neutral Support vehicle will be located near the staging area and will provide wheels for use in the event of a breakdown on the road. If you are concerned the neutral support will not have wheels compatible with your bike, you may ask them prior to the start and if they do not you may furnish your own wheels.
5 If I get a wheel change from the support vehicle, will they pace me back to the front group? No. After the wheel change, the support vehicle will resume its position with the front group and you will be responsible for pacing yourself back to the group. If you are 1 minute or more off-the-back of the group, you will be subject to Rules of the Road. You may want to confer with others in the front group to decide how you will handle flat tires and if anyone will drop back to wait or if everyone is on their own. Off the Front. If I feel like taking a flyer, will I be supported by event motorcade? No. All support/protection will remain with the Peloton. You will be on your own and subject to Rules of the Road How will I know if I made the time cut for an Ace or Deuce jersey? Results will be posted as soon as possible at the finish venue. If I made the time cut, how do I get my jersey? Congratulations! If you registered by March 13, your jersey will be available at the finish venue Sunday after 2:00 p.m. Check at the awards table. If you live out of town and will not be in Tulsa, Sunday, we can mail your jersey to you. Please notify us at the awards table Saturday if that is the case. If you registered after March 13, we will process an order and your awards jersey will be shipped to you approximately 12 weeks following the event. I signed up for the Deuce and made the time cut the first day, but not the second? Do I get a jersey? Sorry you didn t achieve your Deuce goal, but take heart, you still qualified for the Ace or Double Tough jersey. Please notify us at the awards table Sunday which one you would like to receive and we ll order it. Your awards jersey will be shipped to you approximately 12 weeks following the event. How many jerseys do I get if I made the Ace time cut on Saturday and the Deuce time cut on Sunday? You get one jersey in the challenge for which you registered. If you are eligible for more than one jersey (e.g. Ace and Deuce) you may purchase others for $75 per jersey. We will place a special order for additional jerseys after the event with an expected delivery approximately 12 weeks following the event. Any extra jerseys you ordered will be mailed to you. What do I get if I win the Gran Fondo? READ THIS CAREFULLY! The Gran Fondo is not a race against other riders. It is a timed challenge meaning your only competition is the clock. Results will be posted in alphabetical order, not order of finish. Don t be that guy who has to show everyone
6 what an awesome sprint he has at the end of a Gran Fondo. The finish area is not designed to accommodate sprint finishes. Trying to win the Gran Fondo at the finish is dangerous to you and others around you. We reserve the right to disqualify you from receiving an award if you exhibit dangerous behavior. If you feel the need to show off your stuff, go enter one of USA Cycling s many sanctioned road races and crush it! Are tri bikes allowed? No. For safety reasons, no bicycles will be allowed in the Ace/Deuce group with time trial bars. All bicycles in this group should have drop style road handlebars. There is no prohibition against time trial bars in Gran Fondo. However, even in the Gran Fondos when riding in a group, we ask that you not ride in a laid out position on the time trial bars. What does Rules of the Road mean? It means you are subject to the traffic laws set forth by the great state of Oklahoma! You must stop at traffic lights and stop signs; ride single or double as allowed. Here s a summary of some of the Rules of the Road applicable to cyclists in Oklahoma. 1 A bicyclist is granted all the rights and subject to all the duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle [with some exceptions]. 47 Okla. Stat Bicyclists may lawfully ride two abreast. 47 Okla. Stat When overtaking and passing a bicycle proceeding in the same direction, a person driving a motor vehicle shall exercise due care by leaving a safe distance between the motor vehicle and the bicycle of not less than three (3) feet until the motor vehicle is safely past the overtaken bicycle. 47 Okla. Stat Every person operating a bicycle or motorized scooter upon a roadway at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall ride as close as is safe to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway, except under any of the following situations: 1. When overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction; 2. When preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway; 3. When reasonably necessary to avoid conditions and while exercising due care, including but not limited to: 1 This is a summary only. It is not a verbatim or complete listing. For exact language go to Okla. Statutes, Title 47, Chapter 11,
7 a. fixed or moving objects, b. parked or moving vehicles, c. pedestrians or animals, d. surface hazards, or e. any time it is unsafe to continue along the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway. 4. When riding in the right-turn-only lane. Any person riding a bicycle... upon a one-way street... with two or more marked lanes of travel may ride as close as is safe to the left-hand curb or edge of the street or highway. 47 Okla. Stat Okla. Stat applies to bicycles and says, Persons riding two abreast shall not impede the normal and reasonable flow of traffic and, on a laned roadway, shall ride within a single lane. (The phrase normal and reasonable flow of traffic has not been defined by the Oklahoma legislature).
