1 CODA EXPERT CRANK INSTRUCTION MANUAL Congratulations and thanks for your purchase of the new CODA Expert crankset. You have invested in a component which offers light weight, high strength, and stiffness for increased performance. This forged aluminum Crankset is designed to work with a 109.5mm splined hollow spindle bottom bracket such as a Shimano Dura Ace, Ultegra, or 105 model. The Expert Crank also allows you to interchange spiders for changes between two and three chainring configurations. CODA Expert chainrings use the compact chainring bolt pattern of 94mm bolt circle diameter for rings larger than 28 teeth, and 58mm bolt circle diameter for the small inner ring on a triple chainring configuration. This owner s manual contains important and useful information regarding the proper installation, operation, care, and maintenance of your CODA Expert Crankset. Please read and carefully follow these instructions for miles of safe, high performance riding. 2 REQUIRED TOOLS Torque wrench 8mm hex drive bit for torque wrench 32mm socket for torque wrench 5mm hex wrench Shimano TL-UN96 (XTR bottom bracket / chainring spider tool) Shimano TL-FC20 (Chainring nut wrench / self extracting cap tool) Shimano TL-FC15 tool (for use with non-self extracting crank bolts only) Cotterless crank extractor (for use with non-self extracting crank bolts only) Loctite 242 (blue) Bicycle grease EXPERT EX3 CRANKS The CODA Expert EX 3 Crank is supplied with a triple compact chainring, 8 and 9 speed compatible spider. Mounted to this spider are a 44 tooth aluminum alloy large chainring, a 32 tooth aluminum alloy middle ring, and a durable 22 tooth steel small chainring. Each chainring is marked with a two digit manufacturing date code. A replacement spider for the EX 3 Crank is available from your local CODA dealer as part #QCSE3/BBQ. EXPERT EX2 CRANKS The CODA Expert EX 2 Crank is supplied with a double compact chainring, 8 and 9 speed compatible spider. Mounted to the spider are 44 tooth and 29 tooth aluminum alloy chainrings. When used with a wide range rear cassette such as a 9 speed 11-34t, the EX 2 Crank provides a gearing range nearly identical to that of a more traditional triple crank with an 8 speed 11-28t cassette. By eliminating the small chainring, the crank is lighter, has less repetitive gear combinations, and fewer chances for chain suck. Each EX 2 chainring is marked with a two digit manufacturing date code. Additionally, the large ring s date code is followed by the number 2 to indicate that it is the EX 2 compatible 44 tooth chainring. For best shifting performance, CODA EX 2 and EX 3 chainrings should not be interchanged. 2.

3 A replacement EX 2 spider is available from your CODA retailer and is part #QCSE2/BBQ. THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS ARE PROVIDED FOR PERSONS WHO HAVE A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF BICYCLE SPECIFIC MECHANICAL PROCEDURES AND WHO ARE EQUIPPED WITH THE PROPER TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT. INCORRECT INSTALLATION OR SERVICE MAY REDUCE PERFORMANCE, AND COULD RESULT IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION LEADING TO INJURY OR DEATH. IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBTS ABOUT YOUR ABILITY TO PERFORM THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURES, CONTACT YOUR LOCAL AUTHORIZED CANNONDALE DEALER. EXPERT CRANK SPIDER INSTALLATION AND REPLACEMENT 1. It is easiest to install the spider onto the right crank arm before the chainrings have been installed on the spider. You must prepare the right crank arm, spider, and lock ring before assembling them. First, using a Scotch-Brite pad, remove any old Loctite material from the threaded areas and the scalloped interface between the right arm and the spider. A replacement Expert Crank lock ring is available as part #QC112/. 2. Once these parts have been cleaned, coat the threads and all points of contact between the arm, the spider, and the lock ring with Loctite 242 (blue). CAUTION: THE INTERFACE BETWEEN THESE THREE PARTS MUST BE CLEAN FOR MAXIMUM ADHESION OF THE LOCTITE WHICH WILL HELP HOLD THE SPIDER SECURELY TO THE RIGHT CRANK ARM. 3.

4 3. Place the spider on the inside of the right crank arm so that the large chainring will be on the outside when the crank is installed on the bottom bracket. This orientation can be verified by making sure that the two digit date code on the inside of the spider will face in towards the frame of the bike. See Fig Using the Shimano XTR bottom bracket tool TL-UN96, 32mm socket, and torque wrench tighten the lock ring onto the threads of the right arm to Ft-Lbs (48-55 Nm). Wipe any excess Loctite off of the crank. EXPERT CHAINRING INSTALLATION 1. Begin by making sure that the CODA Expert rings which you ve selected are matched to the spider which you are using (EX 2 double or EX 2 triple). 2. The outer and middle chainrings must be installed with the correct orientation to provide the best possible shifting. Each ring has a counter-sunk bolt hole for the five chainring bolts, and the countersunk side of each ring must face away from the five tabs on the spider to which the rings are bolted. This will allow the chainring bolts and nuts to sit into the recesses on each ring. You can verify this orientation by making sure that the two digit date code on the spider and on each chainring faces in towards the frame of the bike. 3. The large chainring has a pin on the outside which will need to be aligned with the right crank arm to prevent a derailed chain from getting jammed between the crank arm and the large chainring. Also, the middle chainring and small chainring (on the EX 3 Crank only) have a bump which needs to be aligned with the right crank arm to provide the best possible shifting. See Fig

6 4. Grease the threads of the chainring bolts. Install the chainring bolts through the outer and middle chainrings and the spider. Tighten each of the chainring bolts to In-Lbs ( Nm) using a 5mm hex wrench to turn the bolt and the Shimano TL-FC20 tool to hold the chainring nut. On the EX 3 Crank, you will also need to install the small chainring bolts. Grease these bolts and tighten each into the spider to In-Lbs ( Nm) using a 5mm hex wrench. INSTALLING EXPERT CRANKS TO A SPLINED BOTTOM BRACKET 1. If the bottom bracket is not yet in the bicycle frame, install it on the bike according to the manufacturer s instructions. Remember that Expert Cranks are compatible with 109.5mm splined hollow bottom brackets such as Shimano Dura Ace, Ultegra, and 105 models. 2. If the crank is equipped with self extracting crank bolts, use the Shimano TL-FC20 tool to unscrew the threaded bolt cap from each of the crank arms. The self extracting crank bolt caps can be identified by two small holes on opposite sides of the 8mm socket head crank bolt. After removing the bolt cap, remove the crank arm bolt and washer from each arm. Apply a little bicycle grease to the splined serrations on the inside of each crank arm, and to the crank arm bolts and washers. 3. Place each crank arm onto the splined bottom bracket spindle so that the splines mesh. Make sure that the arms are oriented 180 degrees (opposite) from each other. Using only the palm of your hand, press or tap the arms onto the bottom bracket to insure that the splines start to engage. 6.

7 4. Install the washers and crank arm bolts and tighten the bolts using an 8mm hex bit and torque wrench to Ft-Lbs (62-68 Nm). Regularly check that the crank bolts are tight to this torque specification. 5. Lastly, reattach the threaded bolt caps (if supplied) and tighten to In-Lbs (5-7 Nm). Remember when installing the pedals to the crank arms that the left pedal is left-hand threaded and is tightened by turning the pedal spindle counter-clockwise. The right pedal has standard threads and is tightened by turning the pedal spindle clockwise. Always grease the pedal threads before installing them into a crank. REMOVING EXPERT CRANKS FROM A SPLINED BOTTOM BRACKET If using self extracting crank bolts, the Expert Crank arms can be removed from the bottom bracket simply by turning each crank arm bolt counter-clockwise. No additional tools are necessary. If using non-self extracting crank bolts, you must first unscrew and remove the 8mm socket head crank bolt. Then insert Shimano crank tool TL-FC15 into the crank bolt hole in the bottom bracket spindle and use a cotterless crank remover to pull the crank arm off of the bottom bracket. 7.
