3 To the Student Driver and their Parents/Guardians: The techniques students will use in this course are designed to help students become smart and aware drivers. Stevenson s Driver Ed. team stresses the importance of becoming a defensive driver, that is, to drive in such a way as to protect yourself from the unexpected moves of others. Due to the fact that students will be driving for such a short period of time (6 hours of actual driving), it is important that we work together to accomplish our objectives. This guide is designed to give you a preview of each lesson. If students use it for this purpose, they will come to class each day with a clear picture of how each maneuver is performed. It is REQUIRED that students bring this packet with them to class EVERY day along with their permit. After every drive, teacher and student will discuss the lesson, including strengths and areas for improvement. If this packet is lost, it is the students responsibility to go to the SHS Driver Education website (www6.district125.k12.il.us/drivered/) to download and print another copy. NO additional packets will be issued from the instructor. ALL Missed drives will have to be made up during a free period, if necessary. Three missed lessons, due to not having packet or excessive absences, will result in finishing the behind the wheel portion of Driver Ed. during the following semester. PLEASE NOTE THERE MAYBE A CHANCE THAT YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER WILL HAVE TO DRIVE ONE- ON- ONE WITH AN INSTRUCTOR. If there is a preference of a male or female instructor (in a one- on- one setting) please advise his/her teacher beforehand. 4 New Illinois LAWS to be aware of: 1. Curfew: Weekdays (Sun- Thurs): 6am- 10pm Weekends (Fri Sat): 6am- 11pm 2. Cell Phone usage: NO cell phone at all until the age of 19 years old. NO TEXTING for teens & Adults NO CELL PHONES for adults in school zones and construction areas. **This includes the Driver Ed car! NO CELL PHONES! Cell phone use in Driver Ed car = NO ROAD TEST! 3. Permit: Must have permit on student while driving at ALL times. Must drive with adult (21 years old or older) who has a valid driver s license for at least 1 year. May have as many passengers as are seatbelts, however person sitting next to student driver must be 21+ years old with valid license. 4. Once 16 years old and have IL driver s license, if 2 moving violations (tickets) are issued with in a 12 month period, this will result in a 3 month suspension of your license. PLEASE enforce these laws at home to ensure safe, non- distracted driving!!! **I am aware of these Illinois LAWS. 5 BEHIND THE WHEEL DRIVING TARGETS 1. Vehicle knowledge: Instrument panel and gears, differentiate gas and brake pedals, adjust mirrors and ability to stay in lane (drifting). 2. Braking/Accelerating: Smooth, complete stops and at proper points and stopping distance. 3. Turns: Hand- over- hand, recovery, turn into proper lane, safe speed and proper signaling. 4. Maneuvers: Pulling to and from curb with signal, parking, hill parking and turnabouts. 5. Lane Change: Mirrors, Blinker, Blind spot, Mirrors, appropriate speed, overtaking traffic, and done in a legal situation. 6. Defensive Driving: Controls and conditions, regulate speed with traffic and road characteristics, following distance and check mirrors. 7. Awareness of Surrounds: Identity signs and pedestrians, intersections: controlled and uncontrolled, traffic signals: right turn on red and left turns, right of way, point of no return, gap choice and railroad crossings. Standard Scale: 4= EXCEEDS behind the wheel driving targets 3= MEETS behind the wheel driving targets 2= NEEDS practice behind the wheel driving targets 1= Requires extra supplementary instruction on the behind the wheel driving targets. 0= Unable to perform any or all of the behind the wheel driving targets. Final Road Test/COOP test: Students are given the opportunity to take the driving test here at Stevenson. If they qualify (please look at page 27, Lesson #11 for the qualifications) AND if they are not randomly chosen at the DMV they will forego the driving test to get their license. 18 Lesson #11: Mall Driving and Angle parking with one- way aisles *FROM THIS DRIVE ON, YOU MUST RECEIVE ALL 3 s AND 4 s and ONLY one 2.5 IN ORDER TO BE ELIGIBLE TO COOP. ELIGIBILITY TO ROAD TEST IS ALSO SUBJECT TO ABSENCES, CORPORATION and YOU MUST HAVE YOUR PERMIT WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES (one warning). Targets: Students will develop the skills required to drive and maneuver in mall areas and will acquire knowledge of identifying one- way aisles. 24 License Eligibility Process For a high school student under the age of 18 to be eligible for an Illinois driver s license, they must have: 1. Successfully completed and met all requirements of the Stevenson Driver Education Department per course description. 2. Met all requirements set by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) per course description. Once a student has met the above requirements, the Stevenson Driver Education Department will submit their name to the ISBE, in cooperation with the Illinois Secretary of State, confirming a student is eligible to obtain their license. It is the student and parents responsibility to check their status on the ISBE home web page in order to verify that all requirements have been met and they are eligible to obtain their license. To check your status, follow these steps: 1. Go to the Stevenson website ( 2. Click on Academics in the top left. 3. Scroll down to Divisions and click on Applied Arts 4. Scroll down and click on Driver Education 5. Once on the SHS Driver Ed website, scroll down to Check Permit Eligibility 6. Enter student s permit number (omit the dashes in the permit number, for example, D ), click on Search. The student status will be either Approved to get driver s license or invalid instruction permit number. Confirmation showing approval to get driver s license should be on the ISBE web page within one week after the semester ends and the student has met all requirements as previously listed. If you have questions on your status, contact the Stevenson Driver Education Department at (847) Do not go to a Secretary of State s Driver s Facility without checking your status, or without the acceptable forms of identification and information. 25 Going for your Driver s License If you are under the age of 18 to get a driver s license you need: 1. At least 16 years of age 2. Valid instruction permit that was issued 9 months prior obtaining your license hour log sheet 4. Certified birth certificate from the county (not a photocopy) or valid passport or I.N.S. documentation or Illinois State I.D. card 5. Social security card (mandatory) **If you do not have a SS# look below. 6. High school photo I.D. 7. Cooperative driver testing certificate - if you qualified and passed 8. Proof of current address 9. Current and valid insurance card for the vehicle you will be driving, if a driving test is required 10. Vehicle that must be in good working order - A. 2 plates securely fastened to the vehicle with a valid sticker B. the horn must work C. the brake lights must work D. the turn signals must work E. the seat belts must work F. headlights and wipers must work G. NO dark tinted windows H. 26 TIPS for TURNING RIGHT TURNS: 1. Make sure you are in the proper lane (RIGHT lane) and signal 100 feet before the intersection. 2. Make sure you are about 3 feet from the curb. 3. Brake down to about 5-7 mph. 4. Check right/left/right before turning. 5. Line up the front of your car with the intersection. 6. If clear begin turning. (about 1 full rotation) At this time you should be coasting (no brake/no gas) 7. About ¾ the way through the turn check your rearview mirror, start straightening the wheel and accelerate smoothly. LEFT TURNS: 1. Make sure you are in the proper lane (LEFT lane) and signal 100 feet before the intersection. 2. Make sure you are positioned closer to the center marking. 3. Brake down to about 7-10 mph. 4. Check right/left/right before turning. 5. Position yourself about halfway into the intersection. 6. If clear begin turning. (about ½ - ¾ full rotation) At this time you should be coasting (no brake/no gas) 7. About ¾ the way through the turn check your rearview mirror, start straightening the wheel and accelerate smoothly. SHS DRIVER EDUCATION PAGE 26

27 SCHOOL PARKING LOT = PERPENDICULAR ***PARKING*** PULLING INTO SPOT: 1. Be at least 8 feet away from intended parking spot. 2. Line up side mirror with first line of parking spot. 3. Turn wheel all the way (until it won t turn anymore) WHILE letting car roll. 4. When parallel in spot straighten wheel (turn 1 ½ times). 5. Line up your side mirror with the car next to you to determine if you far enough in your parking spot. PULLING OUT of a SPOT to RIGHT: 1. Make sure your wheels are straight. 2. Reverse straight back until your side mirror is lined up with the car next to you. 3. Turn the wheel the direction you want to back out. (If you want to back to the left turn the wheel to the left) 4. Remain in reverse until you are far enough away from your parking spot. 5. Straighten your wheels (turn steering wheel 1 ½ times) and drive away. SHS DRIVER EDUCATION PAGE 27

28 PARKING CONTINUED ANGLE PARKING Mall Drive PULLING INTO SPOT: 1. Be at least 5 feet away from spot (8-10 feet is better, but no further. Any further may confuse other drivers.) 2. Moving slowly, start turning the wheel when your steering wheel/side mirror is even with the closest line of the parking spot you wish to enter. 3. Be sure to check the parked cars next to you.
