3 From: Patterson, Bruce Sent: Wednesday, June 04, :20 AM To: Shannon Story Subject: first design proposal Hi Shannon, Attached is my first written proposal for the arms of Whistler. I have also made a sketch to give you a rough idea of what I have in mind, although I should caution you not to worry about the depiction, as I won t be the artist for the grant. There s still some symbolism to explain further, and I ve had to select only a few of the ideas suggested, but see what you think of the proposal. Here are some additional notes: Arms: I tried a few variations of this design, but I settled on this. Originally, I also had a single track in the centre, but this got very confusing visually. I suggest the divided shield to allude to winter and summer. Crest: Because of the connection with the name of the municipality, the marmot (here in natural colours, although it could be in blue, white or any other heraldic colour) was my first choice. Note that it can rest directly on the wreath of cloth, or this can be placed on a helmet with cloth mantling placed on the shield. An example of a municipality s arms with the former design is: and with the latter is Supporters: My colleagues agree that the dragonflies would be great. I ve chosen a colour arrangement using the shield s colours. If you want to see dragonfly supporters, they ve been used once before, here: The compartment, or base, contains some local flora, and there s certainly room for variation. Flag: I did not make an illustration, but I m suggesting a rectangular version of the shield. There are several other possibilities. Badge: Also not illustrated. A badge is a simply alternative emblem you may or may not choose to include in the grant. I look forward to hearing back from you. Bruce Bruce Patterson Deputy Chief Herald of Canada / Héraut d'armes adjoint du Canada Canadian Heraldic Authority / Autorité héraldique du Canada Office of the Secretary to the Governor General / Bureau du secrétaire du gouverneur général bruce.patterson@gg.ca Telephone / Téléphone : or/ou Facsimile / Télécopieur : Sussex Drive / 1, promenade Sussex Ottawa, ON Canada K1A 0A1

4 Armorial bearings proposed for the Resort Municipality of Whistler British Columbia by Bruce Patterson, Deputy Chief Herald of Canada, May 29, 2014 Technical Description (in Blazon, the language of heraldry) Arms (shield): Crest (above the shield): Motto: Supporters: Flag: Badge: Per pale Argent and Vert two pallets gemel that to the dexter Azure that to the sinister Argent, a chief indented of two points per pale Azure and Argent; (Upon a helmet mantled Azure/Vert doubled Argent within a wreath of these colours) A hoary marmot sejant holding a dogwood branch proper; VALLEY OF DREAMS; Two dragonflies Azure embellished Argent eyes Vert wings Argent embellished Vert issuant from a rocky mount set with Douglas fir branches and flanked on either side by grass set with skunk cabbage proper; A banner of the Arms; A dragonfly volant surmounting two skunk cabbage plants in saltire proper; Description and Symbolism Arms: The shield is divided in two by a vertical line, with an angled horizontal line of two points about a third of the way down. On the (viewer s) left there are two narrow blue stripes running down from the point, and on the right are two similar stripes in white. The background of the main part of the shield is white on the left and green on the right, and the top third is blue on the left and white on the right.

5 The two points refer to the two mountains arising from the municipality, Blackcomb and Whistler. The stripes refer to ski tracks, ski lines, bicycle trails, walkways, railways, and other trails around the municipality. The division of the shield alludes to the fact that Whistler is both a winter and a summer resort. Crest: A seated hoary marmot holding in its right paw a dogwood branch, all in their natural colours. This is set on a steel helmet draped with cloth mantling in blue, green and white, set in place by a wreath of twisted cloth in these colours. The hoary or whistling marmot that lives in the area gives its name to the municipality. The dogwood is the official floral emblem of British Columbia. Motto: Supporters: Suggested by the municipality. On either side is a dragonfly in blue with white features, white wings, and green eyes. Below them is a base with a rock in the centre set with Douglas fir branches, and on either side grass from which grows skunk cabbage. The dragonflies are a feature of local wildlife. The base features a rock representing the mountain and grass representing the valley. Douglas fir and skunk cabbage are local flora. Flag: Badge: The shield design is presented as a rectangular flag. A dragonfly in a T shape placed over two skunk cabbage plants with their stems crossing each other.
