7 Road Trauma Key Issues in South Africa More than 90% of South African commuter trips on public roads Appalling road user behaviour fuelled by ignorance and alcohol RTMC, agency tasked with road safety co-ordination has collapsed. Rebuilding process underway but will take years. Budget billions for victim compensation, very little on prevention National Development Plan does not address issue Inefficient, ineffective policing model. Road policing numbers remain static while population and vehicle numbers increase dramatically Road safety competes with myriad social ills for attention Vicious cycle: economy held back by chaotic road environment, helping keep millions in poverty. 8 Key General Public Perception Issues Perceptions of road trauma in South Africa help perpetuate the crisis. Authorities are only interested in fine revenue Speed not a factor in road trauma levels, thus resistance to speed limit reduction Seatbelts are dangerous Road deaths and injuries are inevitable a part of life (eg crash vs accident ) or acts of deities. Road deaths are acceptable - trade-off with mobility. Road deaths and injuries are minor compared to other social issues 3 rd GRSP African Road Safety Summit 8

9 The Good News We Can Make a Difference Together Many nations around the world have successfully contained the pandemic Australian road deaths were similar to SA in the 1970 s, now among world s best (66% reduction between ). Journalists, Faith Based Organisations and organised labour can help educate public, and shift harmful perceptions Private sector can educate employees, and bring expertise, technology and funding to bear on specific issues, particularly where they affect business Civil society can help educate and bring together stakeholders (eg GRSP) Civil society can motivate public opinion towards a pro-road safety stance 3 rd GRSP African Road Safety Summit 9
