2 Who we are and what we do We are Bristol City Council. We run services in Bristol. This is our plan for transport in Bristol. Transport is how you get around the city on buses, trains, cars, bikes and walking. People use transport to go to jobs, schools, shops and other places. We want you to read this booklet and answer the questions in our other booklet called Some questions about our plan for transport in Bristol

3 Why we wrote our plan We wrote our plan because we want transport in Bristol to get better. We want less traffic on our roads. Traffic means cars, vans, lorries and buses. We want people to use different types of transport. We will work with other groups to make this happen. This includes other councils near Bristol and people who run transport services in Bristol.

4 Why our transport needs to change There are 6 reasons our transport needs to change. 1. We are going to build lots of new homes in and near Bristol. This means more people will travel around Bristol to go to work, school or to the shops. Our roads are already very busy, so we want people to use different types of transport.

5 2. We want to be fair to everyone. Some parts of Bristol have good public transport but some parts don t. Public transport lets lots of people travel at the same time. For example on buses or trains. We want to make public transport fair for everyone in Bristol. This means everyone will be able to travel around Bristol easily to go to work, school, shops and other places.

6 More about Why our transport needs to change 3. Your health Our roads are very busy. This means our air is not very clean. This is bad for your health. Lots of people in Bristol do not do enough exercise. Exercise is an activity that works your body and helps you stay healthy. We want more people to walk and cycle. This will make the air cleaner people more healthy.

7 4. Nicer public spaces We want to make our public spaces nicer. A public space is a place that is open to everyone, like a park. We want less traffic on our roads so that our public spaces are nicer to be in more people will walk and cycle in public spaces.

8 More about Why our transport needs to change 5. How long your travel will take Our roads are very busy so it s hard to know how long travel will take. We want to change this. We want less traffic on our roads. 6. To help Bristol have more money We want the amount of money in Bristol to grow. To do this we need transport, so people can get to work and the shops.

9 Our aims - what we want to happen 1. We want you to travel easily around Bristol by walking, cycling or on public transport. 2. We want you to travel to the City Centre by walking, cycling or on public transport. 3. We want less traffic on our main roads. Main roads are bigger roads that you take in and out of the city. 4. We want you to get to your local shopping centre easily by walking, cycling or on public transport. 5. We want you to walk and cycle safely around your neighbourhood. Your neighbourhood is the area where you live. We will tell you more about each one in this booklet.

10 More about Our aims - what we want to happen 1. We want you to travel easily around Bristol by walking, cycling or on public transport. We haven t got space in Bristol for lots more roads. We want you to use cars less. We want you to walk or use a bus, train or bike more if you can. Lots of people on a bus use less space than lots of people in cars. If there is less traffic our air will be better.

11 If there is less traffic we can change how our roads are used. This means we can have bus lanes to make public transport faster cycles lanes to make cycling safer. We will check the number of parking spaces and the price for parking is right. We want you to stop driving during the day when roads are busy and parking spaces are full. We still want you to drive in the evenings to places like restaurants.

12 More about Our aims - what we want to happen Lots of people shop on the internet. This means there are lots of lorries on our roads to deliver parcels. We want less lorries. We want companies who deliver parcels to work together to make sure lorries are full so less are used. Lorries make our air bad. We want more lorries to be electric so our air is better. We will work with people who run Bristol transport to make the bus and train routes better.

13 We will make walking safer, so you can walk to places in the area where you live. This includes walking to bus stops and train stations. We will have more cycle routes so you feel safe cycling around Bristol. This includes cycling to bus stops and train stations. We will look after our roads. We will make them safer by telling people to drive more slowly. When people build new houses we will make them think about transport. People in new houses will be able to travel easily by walking, cycling or on public transport.

14 More about Our aims - what we want to happen 2. We want you to travel to the City Centre by walking, cycling or on public transport. We want people to visit Bristol City Centre. The City Centre is the busiest part of the city. This is where most of the shops and tall buildings are. We want to make it easy for people to travel to the City Centre by walking, cycling or on public transport.

15 3. We want less traffic on our main roads. Our main roads are very busy. Lots of people use them to travel from their neighbourhood to the City Centre. People use cars, vans, buses and bikes on our main roads or walk by them. We might build a train service that runs under the main roads to make them less busy. This will make the main roads better for cycling and walking too.

16 More about Our aims - what we want to happen 4. We want you to get to your local shopping centre easily by walking, cycling or on public transport. We want you to walk, cycle or use public transport to go to your local shopping centre. We want you to travel easily from your local shopping centre to other parts of Bristol. We want you to do this on public transport. Lots of local shopping centres are on main roads. We will change the roads, so they are less noisy and safer for cycling and walking.

17 5. We want you to walk and cycle safely around your neighbourhood. We want you to feel safe when you walk and cycle around your neighbourhood. We will make sure there is public transport from your neighbourhood to other parts of Bristol. We want to work with you to make roads in your neighbourhood better. If the roads are better you might walk and cycle more.

18 How we will pay for the changes The government and other people will give us money to pay for some of these changes. The government is in charge of running the country. Some changes will cost a lot so we need more money. We will get more money by making people pay to park where they work making people pay to drive into the City Centre making businesses pay more tax making people pay more Council Tax. Tax is money you pay to your Council or the government. Council Tax pays for local services like schools and rubbish collection.

19 Starting our changes We know who we need to work with to make our changes. We know how long they will take. Tell us if you want more information about this. How we will know if our plan worked We will check how well we are doing and we will tell you in 5 years. We will put the information on our website.
