7 Saluda, NC SALUDA, NORTH CAROLINA As a Main Street America Affiliate, the City of Saluda is part of a national network of more than 1,200 neighborhoods and communities who share both a commitment to creating high-quality places and to building stronger communities through preservation-based economic development. Saluda is at the top of a sudden rise of 1,000 feet from the plains below. The original name of this spot was "Pace's Gap" or "Pace's Ridge," presumably from the Ransom Pace family who inhabited the area. Many original Saluda families were Scotch-Irish pioneers who left Pennsylvania around the time of the"whiskey Rebellion," which occurred in the early 1790's. John Poinsett built the first road over the Saluda Gap from the South, and in 1878 two houses were standing in the corporate limits of present-day Saluda. A significant change began with the completion of the Southern Railroad in 1878 when the first passenger train panted up the mountain and into Saluda on Independence Day of The Saluda Grade has a feature unmatched by any mainline east of the Rockies- a grade that drops 600 ft. to the mile! As you cross the bridge into town, you'll pass the Green River BBQ, a local watering hole, and follow the Norfolk Southern Railway tracks through town. The Public Library, Old Depot station, and City Hall buildings will greet you with the same style they greeted the original townspeople as they rode their horses into town. The many historical buildings are well blended with the newer additions to town to give Saluda that quaint rustic feel with a modern twist that "just feels like home." Roam the winding mountain back roads, amble the wilderness trails, picnic by the babbling creeks of the rolling terrain of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
