A Word From Big Beauty by President Barlow Hello All and welcome to a new year for the River Canoe Club we are now entering our 78th year of continuous paddling. With the AGM just completed we have a number of new people who have stepped up to take on committee roles. Andrew Mathers has accepted the role of Vice President and continues a legacy left by the outgoing VP John Maddox. George Cowan has signed up for another term of managing the biscuit tin aka the Treasurer. The stalwart Lynn Parker is having another go at Secretary but has decided to take on an apprentice welcome Dee Taylor to the role of Assistant Secretary. Maybe this is part of Lynn s plan to move into transition? Kerrie Davies is taking on the vitally important task of Social Secretary the organiser of our social events! Lynn clearly likes to work so she has accepted the role of Training and Safety Convenor as well. Andrew Love takes on the tough job of reprising Jim Rimbaud as Editor of the RCC journal - Splash. Roland Handel did such a good job on our website he just had to do it again as Webmaster. Which brings me to one of the most illustrious positions on the committee House Officer. David Brown has stepped in to take control of all things broken or in need of servicing at the clubhouse. David Page will be Convenor of Open Water. His enthusiasm for all things fishy is well known in ocean paddling. And now for the most hotly contested committee position of This was won in a dead heat by Gary Luke and Gary Roberts both of these fine lads will act as joint Convenors for Flat Water. Greg Turner is stepping into mighty shoes by filling the role of White-water Convenor, his experience and enthusiasm will add value to this important role. For some reason Colin Kinnison has come out of retirement and offered to be the chair for Canoe Polo good one Cannon! And that just leaves me again - as President! Letter to the President Greetings David Barlow, Good to see that The River Canoe Club of NSW is still active. I was a Country member in the 1950's living in Newcastle NSW and at Easter 1952 was with the RCC on the Williams River trip near Dungog. Starting Point was BANDON GROVE - NW of Dungog and finished at GLEN WILLIAM BRIDGE SSE of Dungog - 52 canoes = 121 people! I was in the Silver Slipper 20 foot Canadian Canoe, made in Canada and I think Did Gasby was the owner skipper. There were 3 of us on board and we acted as carrier for canoes that came to grief. One of these was a Folboat, canvas cover that was repaired with WIDE sticking plaster. I have had 2 Canadian canoes made for me since but have been without for 18 years although I still have my detachable Double/Single paddles made in Canada. Reading thru the comments this old salty can still get a laugh from watching today's youngsters trying the various paddle techniques. Regards, Bruce Donaldson Page 3

News and Gossip Bootie Beer Files Greg Turner Goodradigbee River This should serve as a reminder of the following rules: 1. If you have performed a live roll, that is, a roll in whitewater, you are required to drink a bootie beer if you swim. If you have proved you can roll and choose not to, there must be a penalty. 2. You may not clean a bootie before serving your penalty. 3. Bootie beers should, whenever practical, be consumed immediately after take-out on a river, and be recorded as below. 4. David Dunny Brown, President of the Swimming Duck Club, must be informed of all swims. PWS Opening Penrith Whitewater Stadium is opening this weekend. Saturday it is open from and Sunday from Club Meeting This Saturday at 5pm. Page 4

Paddler Profile David Sea Shepherd Page Meet David Page. Accomplished sea kayaker, saver of cetaceous marine mammals, our RCC Open Water Convenor, and a man we are training up for whitewater due to his ability to access pain killing drugs..read more about him below. Birthplace: Sydney town, but only I was a tough bastard to birth and red earth territory wasn t the place for complications. No, I don t understand this either! Age: 54 Nickname and why: Shepherd fits, being an ardent Sea Shepherd supporter/ crewman. They just call me Doc, the go to man for drugs and money. Occupation: Anaesthetist AKA Gasman Hobbies other than paddling: Love the National parks so self appointed litter partrolman, Treking Cycling, Tennis How long paddling: About 15 years in the ocean, but only 18 months on white water What made you start paddling: I love the wilderness and enjoy the small paddling camaraderie. I became an AC Sea Guide to enable me to introduce paddlers of any skill base to the ocean in an effort to get them to engage and empathise with it so that they have the opportunity to help conserve and protect it. Rivers paddled: Only the Barrington and Shoalhaven so far, but that s set to change Best expedition: A 3 week wilderness paddle in the Dampier Archipelago and Kimberlys, living out of the kayak. An Eden to Mallacoota trip was a close second only because it was shorter. Best piece of advice you have received from another paddler: Your paddle is your best friend, hang onto it. A close second is lean down river! Who in RCC inspires you most: Surely that s Basil. I mean, at 88 or so he still bites off more than he can chew in order to get attention from young nurses. The dedicated stalwarts of the club like Lynn Parker and Jeff Cottrel leave a legacy that I really appreciate. What are your paddling goals for the future: To show Kevin Songberg how the Colorado really should be paddled and advise Bass Strait Garry how to plan a long, really long, ocean trip. That may be the 1600 mile Inside Passage, if I can get my head around all the rain, the bears and the 7 vertical meter tides. My wife just tells me to go, as it s safer than crewing for Sea Shepherd. Page 7

Sea Kayak Paddling George and Shepherd had a weekend of paddling the calm ocean on the weekend of August 26 and 27, clocking up about 65 km paddling from Palm Beach to Maitland Bay on the Saturday and Palm Beach to McMasters Beach on the Sunday. David picked up a drowning hitchhiker and the usual assortment of other plastic. Both days they partnered some ruffians from the NSW Sea Kayak club, who fortunately took good pictures. George was quite taken with the concept of kayak sailing and enjoyed catching some sea waves with minimal effort, whilst practicing his stern rudder technique. It was a shame that the unexpected noreasters failed to kick in for the return trips but George was preparing for long PWS days anyway. Page 8

Rivers Winter Chill at Barrington Part 2 by Dunny We arrived at the steps camp site on Saturday morning around 8.30 am after a short drive from Nelson Bay, we consider to have an easy day on Friday due to being on long service, after visiting the Newcastle area. As driving along the animal trail, we required to stop due to local walking around like Smyth s cows (as having a surname as Brown we don t own any cows), or jumping all over places like kangaroos, wallabies & rabbits. At the steps standing around the camping area or climbing out of tents: John, George, Lynn, the man himself Basil, Deb, Greg, Andrew, Bob & Monica, if I miss any others must have been asleep. Within minutes of arriving Deb, had begun to organize a river run of the local, from the top of the road, back to camp site. So count me in, that makes 10 people, we are moving within 20min s. A mad mad rush happen all over the place with boats appearing left right & centre. Who is taking me, that one over there? Rushing back to tent on wheels (van), a quick change into the speedo & kayak gear, grabbing the boat, rush back to the nearest transport means (a taxi on wheels or waiting at the local bus stop with all our gear plus boats??). So after some 30 min s, the camel train started with lifting of their bodies off the ground & moving up the hill, with a left & then a right, heading cross the sand dunes to the road ends. A House appeared & then passed. Finely passing through the last gate & stopping by the river. The Camel train finely stopped & lower their bodies to the ground; we then started the unpacking of boats & gear. The local farmer performed his crossing of the river backwards for a change. After this boats started seal skating into the water & forming up. The leading group of three boats took-off. Just as the last paddler was making their move, a configuration in the water like a group of school kids waiting for the train home. The local cows, consider to traverse the river, one after the other, just like Jones cows, stopping to look around & figure out what s these weird looking things floating in the water & who are they? The run back had it graceful events of rolling practice here or there, playful in this rapid a miss-line; bugger a rock, before long the steps & we-are-here! After returning from the river trip the number had increase, of the three naughty boys from last year, only one had come. Andrew was on a force family holiday with his Mum, Dad & sister to Tassie & the Controller was sick with the chicken pox. David & his son, Tracy & his mate, plus a few others had appeared. The general question was asked what the river run is like; who went for a swim, how about you dunny? few consider retackling the same run. While we were having fun on the first river run, effortless hands & the general cooks had organized the dinner for tonight, which was Basil, Mrs Dunny & Monica. Before long coooweeeeee was coming from the top of the steps, the last group who had considered a late river run were home. As everyone systematized them self around the camp fire & drinks in hand plus pre-dinner eats. Just as things appeared to set-down, DINNER was call, mouth-watering meal of beef, port (pork) with well cook rhyme, whole onions, potatoes, carrots plus unreal gravy. Yun Yun food Somehow the naught boy, David started letting off fire-works, arrrrrrrrrrrr, that s great one. Look at the colour of that one, as the last was lit & went off, we return to the fire for warmth. Of course within this club any person who had a swim on any club trips is required to drink a bootie or two. So the last trip I attended, the swimming duck boat won again & a bootie was drunk. Suddenly there was a loud banging happen & this red face plus a HOHOHO! Who was this person; it was the only one but Santa, call in on his way home after seeing his mates in the South Pole. Santa told us his mate Basil asked him, could he call in; it would be a great enjoyment to see his old mate again. When he greeted everyone, we walk him back to his rig & there was three big old white man s kangaroo, as well Basil was standing there talking to Mrs Santa. After a quick wave & thanks they were gone, heading north. Page 9

Following a while the night plus all the events of the day started to take the effects & the numbers slowly drop off, to only a few keep talking. Sunday As the sun broke the horizons & started to warm the camp site, movement slowly happen. The important cupper of tea materializes before our eyes, afore long, breakfasts was been cooked & devoured. Then a catechized question, who s looking to paddle from Cobark, or just the local excursion to town. At last about 14 paddles admitted to challenge, so the recognized for a camel train with long range tanks for the crossing of the mountain Alps. So out come s the speedo & half dry kayak gear, transient of change of clothing, then rush to help load the boats onto a camels. Before time had passed the Afghan Cameleers gave the tranquillity command to move out. So again heading out across the sand dunes towards the mountain Alps. Without time passing the stopping of the caravan had arrived at the put-in site. So with a quick dogfight of the paddlers who got the show on its road, before long the skirt been fitted to boats & stampeding into the water? From here the trio was divided into two & the leader of the leader to the lead (Deb) closely followed by the rest? The only way was follow the river prominence, even the water temperature was just above zero give it a plus but not by much or add a little. Then the clouds arrived to add to the temperature. But the paddling intensifies to increase the indifference of water? It was all agreed to find a warm spot in the sun, to stop, warm-up & have smoko. Afterwards the snail pace continue down the stream. Suddenly the bridge appeared & that means a sunny warm stop plus lunch. Afterwards the runs to the steps had little eventful until the mischievous rapid which court George out & the orange blade paddle became as two, so a duck swim of the leader 2IC. The steps meticulous appeared, so thanks to all attend the winter chill RIVER CANOE CLUB- CALENDAR July 2012 NOTE: Because of the unpredictability of river levels most whitewater trips are organised using the Yahoo group.
