The first man to circumnavigate the world?

Born 1480 in Portugal First known expedition: 1505 Sent to India on a mission for the King of Portugal

1513: A Spanish explorer, Balboa, claims to have seen a new ocean on the far side of South America Many become convinced this is the route to the Spice Islands that Columbus was looking for Magellan gets Charles V, King of Spain, to fund a voyage to find this new route Given 5 ships Santiago Victoria Concepcion Trinidad 277 crew It took 18 months to get ready for the voyage San Antonio What kind of provisions would Magellan and his crew have brought with them?

We have lots of information about Magellan s voyage despite the fact that Magellan s records were lost. This is due to a nobleman from Venice, Italy Antonio Pigafetta A keen observer and writer Made lots of notes and kept journals about Geography Climate Languages Plants and animals Why do you think Pigafetta s journals are so important?

Magellan was Portugese, but many of his crew were Spanish. Based on what we have learned about the age of explorations, why might this fact have caused problems for Magellan? The fleet s first stop was the Spanish Canary Islands Pigafetta noted here that Magellan s captain s were already plotting against them

South America was much larger than Magellan imagined Journey took 8 weeks High winds and dangerous seas Stopped to rest at Port St. Julian 3 captains mutiny Magellan puts rebellion down 2 captains executed 3 rd put ashore Port St. Julian

Magellan and his crew were now sailing where no one had sailed before they called it El Paso They followed close to the shore This made their sailing difficult and dangerous.why? How might some of the crew reacted to this situation? The Santiago is shipwrecked The San Antonio deserts Magellan and returns to Spain

Finally, the remaining ships found a way through Today, this passage is known as The Straits of Magellan Look how narrow and jagged the straits are in this picture What do you think sailing through the straights for the first time would have been like?

Have you ever wondered where the Pacific Ocean gets its name? After the harrowing and dangerous passage along the coast of South America and through the Straits, Magellan and his crew were very happy to reach open seas again So Magellan called this new ocean Tempre Pacificum meaning Peaceful Sea From here, Magellan expected to reach India in no time

Look at this globe. What would you say is the defining feature of the Pacific Ocean? Before Magellan s voyage no one had spent longer than 2 months out of sight of land Magellan and his ships spent four months crossing the vast Pacific Australia Antarctica North America South America

What do you think life would have been like aboard Magellan s ships during the crossing of the Pacific? Look at Pigafetta s account on p. 222 As their supplies ran out, hunger and disease became rampant, many sailors died Finally, they reached land, near The Phillipines Stocked up on food and water Explored. What were they looking for?

As with many explorers, Magellan tried to convert the locals he met to Christianity However, some did not want to be converted This led Magellan to get involved in a local war Magellan and 40 of his sailors were killed Now, only 1 of the 5 original ships remained

September 1522 Magellan s last ship, the Victoria sails into Seville Captain Juan Sebastian Del Cano in command What state do you think the ship was in? Only 18 men were on board Antonio Pigafetta survives

What was Magellan looking for when he set out? Did he succeed in this goal? If he didn t find a quicker, easier route to the Spice Islands, then why is his voyage so important? Del Cano, Pigafetta and the other survivors were the first to circumnavigate the world They finally proved the world was round The proved Columbus theory that India and China could be reached by sailing west was correct Pigafetta s journals helped scholars learn much about the new places they had visited
