5 Introduction This document shows abstracts for all boats designed by Tom Yost. Its main purpose is to serve as a quick information source, and for a quick comparison opportunity only. All content shown here is an excerpt of information presented on in the internet. Please be aware of the fact that the information given on 's website is the only valid source of information. His website one need to know (offsets, frame construction, skinning, maintenance and so far) to be able to build one of these boats. The boats are listed here in alphabetical order. says: All kayaks are designed for good performance, ease of construction, and low cost. Unlike most commercial folding kayaks, these boats are narrow, shallow, and light weight. Many of the designs are based on traditional Inuit (Greenland) and Aleut ( Baidarka) kayaks. 6 Construction All designs in this manual, except inflatables, can be constructed as folder, in wood frame, in woodstrip/fiberglass or stitch&glue (S&G) versions, though instructions are not provided for these hard shell versions. Folder Construction Folder construction is a simplified version of the Feathercraft technique. Aluminum stringers, HDPE (plastic) cross sections, and a lightweight PVC skin Construction time is approximately 100 hrs. Costs averaging $500.00US Assembly time under 30 minutes. Wood frame (non-folder) Construction Construction time is approximately 65 hrs. 11 Nikumi The "Nikumi" Iqyax / Baidarka is a wood frame multi-chine touring kayak. Construction is of cedar stringers and plywood cross sections. The aft deck profile is a flat surface equal to the gunwale height at each station. This shape is useful in entry / exit and in rolling. The forward deck has a single stringer Aleut peaked style deckridge. ** The 36" Cross Section 1 distance from the bow is a variable. Place station one on the strongback near the end with all other cross sections starting at this point. The bow can vary between 36" and 44" or so ahead of the Cross Section 1 station. This will be determined during construction. The next several pages display bow and stern construction details including an extra cross section (0) whose positioning is optional if needed. The kayak features a wood coaming and Velcro zipper flap. Though similar in dimensions to a Feathercraft Khatsalano, it has a different hull shape plus a moderate amount of rocker. 23 Sea Otter This design incorporates new features such as a breakdown aluminum / PVC sleeve coaming, aluminum stem plates, a raised flat aft deck for greater gear storage, and a 42 / 1'067 mms folded length. With a 15ft / 4'600 mms length, and a 20 / 508 mms beam performance is good. Weight is under 30lbs / 13.5 kgs. The Sea Otter is a lower volume version of the Sea Tour 15. Maximum beam and chine width are 90% of the Sea Tour 15 dimensions. Recommended capacities range from 160lbs / 73 kgs to 225lbs / 102 kgs based on "Paddler + boat + gear". The smaller size of this folder makes it a good choice for air travel. The Sea Otter-R is a lower aft deck version designed for rolling / light touring. This version uses different cross sections 4 through 6, a flat coaming, and a new skin. The flat aft deck is nearly 2 / 51 mms above the gunwale low point for greater freeboard and storage. 27 Sea Pup The Sea Pup was designed for kids and small adults. Though it has a narrow beam ( 19"), it retains good stability for learning basic paddling skills, and enough performance and size for many years of use. Like the other folders in this manual, it uses aluminum stringers, HDPE cross sections, and a PVC skin. Paddler weights range from 75 to 140 lbs. For smaller paddlers, the Sea Flea is now available. Compared to the Greenland boats, they are wider and taller, and have a peaked aft deck. The coaming is a 2 piece, and it follows the sloping contour of the aft deck unlike the flat Greenland style coamings / deck. The two piece coaming fits in a travel case with the kayak, and the peaked deck makes it possible to skin the deck with one section of PVC. The Sea Tour 15-R / 17-R are flat aft deck versions designed for rolling / light touring. The flat aft deck is 2 / 51 mms above the gunwale low point for greater gear storage. This is a change from the flat aft deck Greenland kayaks which have the deck at the same height as the gunwales. Two additional.5 / 14 mms aft deck tubes are required. In addition to it's use as a 500+lb / 225 kgs displacement folding double, it's compact size and light weight make it easy to paddle as a single. It can be built as a dedicated double with two coamings a single with one center coaming with three smaller coaming's a single large washboard coaming for both single and double use. It paddles well as a single from the aft coaming, though better balance can be achieved with a more center paddling position. The smaller Sonnet 14/6 is the singles version of this design.
