They will be stored off the path and locked together overnight. If you arrive after 6:15, you are welcome to put your own boat next to those already there. We strongly encourage you to drop off your boats on Friday afternoon. If you are unable to do this, you may drop off your boat between 5:30 and 6:00 am on Saturday. Participant Check in, Point Lookout Resort Summit There is limited parking at the summit, but a shuttle will run from the lot at Hedges Hall to the top. Event parking will be marked. You will receive your swim cap or paddler bib number, gift bag, and any fundraising awards for which you are eligible at check in. You are welcome to turn in additional donations (check, cash, or credit card) at the event. Donations are welcome at any time up to and after the event itself. Only donations received before 6:30 pm on Friday night will be credited toward eligibility for fundraising awards. Dinner and Meeting 5:00 pm 7:15 pm Due to limited capacity at the venue, the participant dinner is for swimmers and paddlers only. We are unable to accommodate family members and friends. There are excellent restaurants in Camden and Belfast, to the north and south. Dinner is a casual buffet with vegetarian options served from 5:00 6:30, and a cash bar will be open from 5:00 7:00. A mandatory event overview and safety briefing will be held from 6:30 7:15.
SATURDAY, AUGUST 20 Swimmer and paddler check in Point Lookout/Hedges Hall 5:30 6:30 am All participants are required to check in at Hedges Hall for body marking. We will provide a continental breakfast for swimmers and paddlers. Space is available for you to put on wetsuits, organize your morning clothes bag, etc. Only those who make prior arrangements to miss the Friday night check in may pick up gift bags and packets on Saturday morning. Please park at Hedges Hall for the day. A shuttle will be available from Hedges Hall to the beach. Many participants choose to walk the short distance. Be especially careful crossing Route One, where the speed limit is 45. Kayak/SUP Launching and Swim Prep Point Lookout Beach 5:30 6:45 am Paddler/Swimmer pairs will carry kayaks/sups the short distance from the path where they are stored to the beach. Swimmers will find a white drawstring Morning Clothes Bag in their gift bag. Bring this bag to the beach and leave it in the designated location. These will be transported to Islesboro and available to you at the finish. Anything you wish to have at the finish, or to discard at the beach, such as extra warm clothes, shoes, etc. may go in this bag. Please do not place anything of value in the bag. Any clothes bags not picked up by the end of the event will be kept at the LifeFlight Foundation office at 13 Main St, Camden, for 3 days before the contents will be donated. You will need your numbered swim cap to pick up your dry clothes bag at the finish. Mandatory Meeting and Roll Call Point Lookout Beach 6:45 am All swimmers and paddlers must be present for this safety briefing and roll call. If you miss roll call, you can t swim. There will be two portable toilets at the beach.
Swim Start 7:00 am The swim will be a self seeded mass start. The beach is rocky; consider booties that you can hand to your paddler at the start. It slopes very gradually and is wide, so the start is not terribly crowded. We encourage faster swimmers to place yourselves out in front. You may start with your paddler right next to you, or your paddler may head out in front of you for you to swim out to after the start. Either way, swimmers are responsible for finding their paddlers immediately after starting. And paddlers are responsible for not hitting swimmers. Please realize that swimmers often can t see you it s your job to stay well away from them with your boat and your paddle. This is not a race. Fins, booties, gloves, and neoprene hats are all permitted, as is resting on your support boat (with forward motion or without). The swim is not timed, so please bring your own device if you want to record your time. Safety The paddler s job is to stay directly with his or her swimmer, to provide support and rest as needed, to assess for signs of hypothermia or distress, and to signal for help if needed. The paddler is the first line of protection in our very detailed safety plan for these reasons, and also so that we can keep track of our swimmers. We count on the paddler being right next to their swimmer so we know where everyone is. We have 8 course boats and 3 safety boats patrolling the course and watching you carefully. We need to know that every paddle boat has a swimmer associated with it. Any swimmer spotted without a paddler will be pulled from the water until the paddler is located. All paddlers must wear a PFD and carry a flotation device (such as an extra PFD) for their swimmer, plus a cell phone and a whistle (provided in your gift bag). Please also wear (on your back) the bib number provided. Paddlers, be aware of the signs of hypothermia: Shivering (although as hypothermia worsens, shivering stops.) Clumsiness or lack of coordination. Slurred speech or mumbling. Confusion and poor decision making Drowsiness or very low energy Please also be aware of signs of Swimming Induced Pulmonary Edema (SIPE), a life threatening condition: Shortness of breath out of proportion to effort being expended
Crackles, rattling or junky feelings deep in the chest associated with breathing effort usually progressively worsening with increasing shortness of breath, and may be cause for a panic attack Cough, usually distressing and productive The wetsuit may feel as though it is hindering breathing ability If you suspect either of things, signal for help. We have plenty of support boats staffed with medical personnel. If assistance is required for any reason, the paddler should raise his or her paddle vertically in the air, wave it from side to side, and give three whistle blasts. If a paddler needs assistance and is unable to signal, the swimmer should take the paddle and perform the signal, or get assistance from another paddler. DO NOT hesitate to ask for help! A safety boat will come immediately. If you re in doubt about your swimmer s health or well being, signal for help. Event safety staff may elect to remove any swimmers from the water at their discretion. Course and Finish Three large course buoys will designate the course. Volunteers will assist swimmers out of the water at the finish. Paddlers will leave their swimmers just before the finish and be directed around the point to the beach on the east side of Grindle Point. Volunteers on shore will assist paddlers with getting around the point. Do not cross in front of or behind the ferry! Paddlers will come ashore at the beach on the east side. Volunteers will assist with getting your boat out of the water and in the right place. Please inform them at this time whether you wish to a) paddle back alone; b) paddle back with the group (meeting at the beach at 10:30); or c) take the ferry back to Lincolnville Beach. For paddlers wishing to take the ferry back, kayaks will be transported in batches to the Lincolnville Beach dock (next to the ferry dock) starting at 9:30 am. Shuttles will be on site to take you (not your kayak) back to Point Lookout to pick up your vehicle; you may then come back to load your kayak into your own vehicle. Food and drink will be provided at the finish for swimmers, paddlers, and volunteers. Please thank the residents of Islesboro for these very generous donations. All participants are encouraged to tour the LifeFlight helicopter and meet the crew. A brief acknowledgement ceremony will take place at 9:45. Please consider sticking around to welcome the final swimmers.
Ferries return from Islesboro at 10:30 and 12:30. All participants will receive a ferry ticket at check in. Shuttles will run from the ferry to Point Lookout from 10:45 to 1:00. We wish you a fun, safe, incredibly rewarding event. Thank you for supporting LifeFlight!
