KAMLOOPS DRAGON BOAT CLUB SPRING UPDATE MARCH 2015 From: Club President: Don Here we go again!!! The 2015 Dragon Boat season is almost here. Some things have changed since you last paddled the Thompson River.some things are better, and some things are more expensive. As your executive made decisions over this winter, we tried to always keep in mind the recommendations of the Committee report which was completed and discussed at our December 2014 General Meeting. This newsletter tries to provide an overview for the 2015 season. Flipping the Boats We ll begin on Saturday, March 21, at 10am by flipping the boats over and returning them to their carts. These boats are heavy and we need lots of help. Please make it a priority to be there if you can. We ll have coffee and muffins to combat the hunger pangs. Also, a big reminder to those that may have KDBC equipment that may have been stored over the winter in your sheds, basements, closets etc. Please bring these items to the compound at the boat flipping. Work Party March 28th at 9:30am On March 28t at 9:30 am there will be a work party stuck to attend to minor repairs needed to the boats and compound. We already know that there are several loose seats, that the seats must be sanded and re-varnished, and that one steering arm needs to be fixed. Then there are always the surprise issues! If you are available, we d appreciate all the help we can get. The first Paddle We ll start on Wednesday, April 8 at 5:30pm. That date follows right after the Easter weekend. It ll be fun!! The Paddling Schedule for 2015 The Kamloops Dragon Boat Club will paddle on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday: - Monday at 6:30pm, followed by a social hour, which will start once the weather warms. - Wednesday at 5:30pm, followed by the Recreational Paddlers at 7pm (the Rec program will start Wed. May 6th at 7:00 pm)

- Saturday at 9:30am, moving to 8:30am after the May long weekend. - Additional practices may be added by Competitive/Seniors teams Festivals for 2015 As a club, we will attend four festivals this year. - Rio Tinto Festival in Vancouver on June 19,20,21 - Harrison Festival on July 25 - Kamloops Festival on August 8 - Penticton Festival on September 12,13 In addition, the Seniors team will attend the 55 and Over Games on August 27,28,29 The Competitive and Seniors teams may attend other festivals as well. Jodi and Tristan are your festival co-coordinators this year and you can reach them at festivals@kamloopsdragonboatclub.ca Membership Fees The fees are going up! Yes, you read that right. Last year members paid $180 and got a club shirt as well. The 2015 membership fee has been set at $200, no shirt included. I ve got some splainin' to do. First, let me begin with a bit of history. Several years ago the KDBC bank accounts were almost overflowing. We were the envy of every non-profit organization in town. So a conscious decision was made to plow some money back into the club to benefit the members. We took a memorable bus trip to Nanaimo. We held a wonderful supper/dance. We subsidized members going to festivals. Although the budget shows we lost money, it was done with a purpose. In addition, several factors have changed in the past couple of years and each has influenced our bottom line... Number 1 - In 2010, the club had 135 members paying fees. We ended last year with 75 people paying fees. Number 2 - With the passage of time, the costs of maintaining and replacing our equipment has become an increasing factor. Number 3 - Coaching costs have risen. Number 4 - We have tried hard to encourage members to attend festivals by subsidizing costs. Last year we paid out almost $7500 to subsidize festivals. Our club still has money in the bank. We are not in a financial mess, but our financial excesses are largely gone. It has come to a time where we have to balance the budget. Last year we provided 74 opportunities to paddle and this year should be similar. If you pay $200 and paddle every time, you will pay less than $3 per session for the coaching and equipment. But, you say, no one comes every time. Say you attend 50 paddling sessions in a year - that works out to $4 for every time on the water. No yoga class in town can match that price! The biggest change will be the cutting back on the subsidizing of festivals. Last year members were charged $25 to attend a festival, even though the price to the club was much more. This year members will be charged a price closer to the real cost. If the cost to the club is $55, we 2

will subsidize the $5 and charge members $50. This single change in procedure should save us several thousand dollars. In addition, any members who require a club paddling shirt will be asked to buy it at our cost. We have a supply of shirts on hand. Drop In Fees In the past we have tried to encourage new members by allowing them to paddle for the first two or three times for nothing. In keeping in line with what happens with other fitness activities around town, these drop-in people will still be made welcome but now they will be charged $10 for each time they come. There will be no limit on the number of times they pay the drop-in fee. Recreational Program Given the uncertainty of the coaching situation at the beginning of last year, the decision was made at that time to discontinue the recreational program. Now that things have stabilized, we re happy to say that the recreational program is back. The new recreational program will run from May 6 - September 30 at 7:00 pm and take place on Wednesday after the regular club practice. The new rec program is designed for people who want to come out once a week for a paddle on the river. It will focus on combining proper technique with a bit of exercise, a chance to socialize with friends, and a chance to enjoy an evening on the river. The intention is not to enter a festival or compete. While some paddlers may decide to join the regular club, that is not the purpose of the program. The cost for this program is $125. From: Vice President, Ben The 2015 Kamloops Dragon Boat Club paddling season is almost here, and we are greeting the new season with exciting news. In January, the KDBC received a generous grant of $6000 from the Kamloops Blazers Sports Society Sports Legacy Fund for the purchase of a new club boat. A new boat will help the KDBC continue to provide a quality sporting experience for new and continuing paddlers. After lots of discussion, the KDBC has decided that the newest piece of club hardware will be a 10-person dragon boat. These speedy little brothers of the 20-person boat family will give the club some flexibility in serving its paddlers. A 10-person boat means coaches can take out smaller groups of new paddlers who may not be quite ready for our famous 10+ minute drills, or load up a group of "battle hardened" paddling veterans for stroke technique work - not any of us need that, right? The KDBC is excited to see new and familiar faces and your smiles as we get back into the sport we all love. Paddles up!! 3

From: Social Committee- Jodi Just a friendly reminder the Kamloops Dragon Boat Club will have a team in Boogie the Bridge on Sunday April 26 th. So dust of the runners or walking shoes and come out and sign up for 5km, 10km or 21km distances by running, walking or strolling. The team has been created, all you need to do is sign up for Kamloops Dragon Boat Club ( is the Registration ID). The deadline is Tuesday March 31 st, 2015 for the entry price of $50 (+taxes, service fee, includes a T-shirt) after that the price goes up. If you have any suggestions or questions social@kamloopsdragonboatclub.ca Festival Committee: Jodi and Tristen Festival planning is under way and hotels have been reserved for Rio Tinto Vancouver and Penticton festivals stay tuned for details. If you have any suggestions or questions festivals@kamloopsdragonboatclub.ca Fundraising - By Will Parei & Tracy Waddington This year, the KDBC is going to look into the possibility of doing some external fundraising as a way to get the club some additional revenue. We've yet to decide exactly what this revenue will be used for, whether that be additional equipment, festival costs, keeping down the cost of memberships, etc. but it's fair to say that what we use the money for will be somewhat dependent on how much we receive. So far, one thing is certain, what we WON'T do is to to subject you all to small fundraising days like bottle drives, pub dinners, etc. What we're looking for are larger, more meaningful initiatives. The first thing we're going to do is to apply to the province for a Gaming Grant. These grants are administered by a branch of the government called GPEB. We feel the club qualifies for a grant and applications must be submitted by the end of May. The club will hear by the end of August on what the result will be so any money we receive (if at all) will be applied to next year's budget. We've also started to think about approaching other large companies for sponsorship money. This is just in the initial stages so stay tuned for more information. If you have any questions or suggestions, please talk to either Will or Tracy. Winter Workout - Will Parei From the beginning of November until the end of March, 19 members of the KDBC have been working out at Kozoris Acceleration in an effort to keep fit over the winter. These additional sessions were arranged by the KDBC and were coached by Johnes. Once a week participants had 19 workouts while those who paid for twice a week sessions were able to participate in 39 workouts. At each session, Johnes would put together various 'stations' that created a challenging circuit workout. Each station allowed the participants to work as hard as they wanted, under the watchful eye of Johnes. As you can imagine, some good natured competition allowed participants to push themselves fairly hard. These sessions are an 4

opportunity for KDBC members to work together and are one more option to help us stay fit all year round. I for one have thoroughly enjoyed the workouts and hope we can do something similar next winter. Kamloops Dragon Boat Festival- Dana Gibeault Plans are well on their way for this year's festival being held on August 8th in conjunction with Ribfest. The goal is to have a minimum of 18 teams participating this year. The City of Kamloops is again helping to sponsor this event. The Festival was also a successful recipient of the Blazer Grant and so will be on the look-out for new drums and chairs to outfit the boats. Thank-you to the KDBC and Spirit Warriors for again co-hosting this event. Watch your for a call for volunteers coming out shortly. Website: Guy Waddington Our website domain management and hosting has been transferred the servers to The Computer Guys (Guy Waddington). This allows for much more control over the site and saves the club $250/year. The domain is still A new site is under development and can be viewed at please provide feedback to webmaster@kamloopsdragonboatclub.ca KDBC is now registered with Techsoup (a charity provider for computer software and hardware) This allowed us to qualify for free Google Apps hosting and services including: shared calendar and hosting.
