3 ANNUAL REPORT YEAR OVERVIEW Objectives The Foundation s objectives are to promote the education of, and research by pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists within the general fields of design, manufacture, distribution and use of medicines for humans and/or animals. Board of Managing Directors In 2009 two meetings were scheduled ( February and September). The first meeting took place on 12 February by telephone conferencing. The second meeting took place on 2 September in Istanbul, Turkey. These guidelines have been subsequently adapted and adopted in a wide number of developed countries. In certain cases, the national professional body has strived to adapt the guidelines and developed, in collaboration with the government, specific regulation/legislation on this matter. The FIP Foundation has been actively involved in promoting the Good Pharmacy Practice project and supporting pilot initiatives in several countries. For the latest updates on FIP GPP activities please visit the FIP Website at Good Pharmacy Practice The International Pharmaceutical Federation first adopted the guidelines for Good Pharmaceutical Practice in These guidelines were developed as a reference to be used by national pharmaceutical organisations, governments, and international pharmaceutical organizations to set up nationally accepted standards of Good Pharmacy Practice. The revised version of this document was endorsed by WHO in 1997 and subsequently approved by the FIP Council in The GPP Guidelines are based on the pharmaceutical care given by pharmacists. The guidelines recommend for national standards to be set: < The promotion of health; < The supply of medicines, medical devices, patient self-care; < Improving prescribing and medicine use by pharmacists activities. 4 ANNUAL REPORT CONGRESS TRAVEL GRANTS The Foundation Board awards a limited number of Congress Travel Grants on annual basis, to enable pharmacists and/or pharmaceutical scientists to attend the FIP congress. The aim of the Congress Travel Grants is to allow recipients to travel to the FIP congress in order to develop, or to help others to develop, skills and/or knowledge in line with the objectives of the Foundation. The Executive Committees of the FIP Regional Pharmaceutical Forums will be acting as Regional Evaluation Committees. The successful grant applications will be equally spread amongst the six FIP Regional Forums, with a maximum of two grant winners per forum. In 2009, for the 16th time, the FIP Foundation for Education and Research had a booth in the non-commercial exhibition area during the FIP annual Congress. Once again, the stand was combined with the FIP booth and proved to be a great success, especially with the help of the Board of Directors. The Foundation Board of Directors decided to grant 12 Congress travel grants in 2009.The following grant awardees were able to attend the FIP Congress in Istanbul: African: Dr Imran Manji (Kenya) Mr Sultan Suleman (Ethiopia) Foundation Booth 2009 at the FIP Congress Lisbon Americas: Mr Cristiano S. Kohli (India) Western Pacific: Mr Muhammad Abdul Hadi (Malaysia) Mr Shelldon Jagdon (Philippines) Eastern Mediterranean: Ms Samar Saad Eldeen Azab (Egypt) Dr Dalia Yehia Abo Zahra (Egypt) FIP Young Pharmacist/Pharmaceutical Scientist Award for Professional Innovation This award is given on an annual basis to a young pharmacist or pharmaceutical scientist. Its aims are to promote innovation in the profession of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences through creative projects addressing a specific issue or problem within a field of professional practice or pharmaceutical sciences. The project s outcome should have a positive impact on the community. In 2009 the FIP Young Pharmacist/Pharmaceutical Scientist Award for Professional Innovation was awarded to Dr Claire O Reilly (Australia). Her project titled Reducing mental health stigma: Development of an e-learning program for pharmacist, will develop an innovative e-learning program to reduce mental health stigma among pharmacists. Stigma is cited as the greatest barrier to providing effec- 4

5 tive community-based mental healthcare. Claire s project aims to develop and pilot test an innovative e-learning program to reduce mental health stigma amongst pharmacists. The program is a simple and effective intervention that has the potential to be rolled out nationally and adapted internationally for use in educating pharmacy students and pharmacists in mental health. The Foundation has established a series of benefits, both individual and corporate, in order to attract potential donors/sponsors. Six categories have been installed: < Ribbon - 25 Euros < Bronze Euros < Silver ,000 Euros < Gold - 1,001 5,000 Euros < Platinum - 5,001 25,000 Euros < Diamond - 25,001 Euros and more We would like to highlight the Gold, Platinum and Diamond categories. Oddis (USA) Apoteket AB (Sweden) Pharmaguild (Australia) Platinum Category: -- Claire O Reilly (Australia) Guidelines for the Grants and Awards Programme The Board has developed detailed Guidelines for each of the classes of Awards and Grants. These can be obtained from the Executive Director of the FIP Foundation or on the web site: Diamond Category: -- The members of the bronze and silver category have received a letter of appreciation after the FIP Congress, whereas the members of the Gold, Platinum and Diamond categories will be receiving a certificate of merit and will be personally acknowledged during the Council dinner, which is held at the FIP World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Lisbon, Portugal. FOUNDATION SUPPORTERS CLUB Donations and other forms of sponsorship are an essential component in the success of the Awards Programme and the FIP Foundation.
