4 Definitions DB22: - 20 paddlers of same gender - 1 drummer of same gender - 2 reserves of same gender - 1 steersperson (can be adult, any gender) 20 paddlers drummer steersperson DB12: - 10 paddlers of same gender - 1 drummer of same gender - 2 reserves of same gender - 1 steersperson (can be adult, any gender) drummer 10 paddlers steersperson Steersperson must possess SDBA Basic Helm certification May not necessarily be student or staff from school taking part SDBA will provide a pool of steerspersons on race day
5 Basic Requirements Drummer must actively beat the drum IMPORTANT SAFETY REQUIREMENT! - crew must wear PFD (either SDBA-type or own) - crew must put on footwear PADDLES CHECK! - crew can only use SDBA paddles OR own IDBF approved paddles
6 Boat Marshalling Area (Embarkation/Disembarkation Point) Calling of Race Events Teams will be called to report to the Boat Marshalling Area minutes before their scheduled start time Team Managers (Teachers-in-Charge) must ensure that your Teams enter the correct race and dragon boat type/ colour/number Equipment Check Teams must check that the dragon boat & its accessories (dragon head, tail, drum, drummer s seat & rudder) are in good working condition (no leaks, etc) Report any problem with the dragon boat or its accessories to the Boat Marshall
7 Provided by Race Organizers Per race basis To be returned after each race Wooden Paddle - Red Beech Palm Grip, - This rugged paddle satisfies the needs of strong paddlers from fishermen to white water rafters. - Made from Tasman Fir in lengths 4ft, 5ft and 5.5ft (1.35m, 1.5m and 1.65m) Personal Floatation Device (PFD) - multi purpose - 3 strap fastening point - wide arm opening - rated up to 90kg+ Alternatively, Teams may use their own paddles (carbon fibre or timber) and PFDs.
8 Calling Standard 1 st Call: Registration: 1hr before the start of your race category Reporting: 30 mins before start of race 2 nd Call: 5 mins after 1 st call Teams have 1 min to register or report Final (or Last) Call: 1 min after 2 nd Call Teams must register or report immediately Teams will be declared DNR (Did Not Report) if fail to comply & the race will start without them
9 Boat Traffic Moving to Start Point Stay clear and away from the racing lanes Do not cross into the racing lanes without specific instructions from the Race Starter or Course Umpire When a race in underway, stop paddling to give clear water to the racing boats Wash-pull effect Not in the centre Racing Stay in the centre of your respective lanes Always steer in a straight line Beware of the wash-pull effect where the wake of the boat in front will suck your boat into its wash and eventually into a side-swipe type collision
10 The Pontoon Start Holding of Dragon Boat Tail Race Aligners will be holding onto the dragon boat tail Steersperson to approach the pontoon by getting into your lane first and then Reversing-in (back-paddle) Steersperson must lift the rudder out of the water Adjustments Make sure you back-down your Boats exactly to the location of the Lane Numbers To adjust pointing of dragon boat, ask the Race Aligners to swing the tail left or right
11 The Pontoon Start 1. Approach the Start Pontoon from the side. Identify your designated Lane Numbers
12 The Pontoon Start 2. Move up into your lane. Aim at the Lane Numbers. Slowly backed down (back paddle) to the Start Pontoon
13 The Pontoon Start 3. Steersperson MUST lift rudder out of the water and onto the pontoon. To point the boat, ask the Race Aligners to swing the tail left or right
14 Start Command 1. HOLD YOUR BOAT Warning of impending start 2. ARE YOU READY Paddles up! 3. ATTENTION Race Aligner releases tail 4. AIR HORN Go! Begin paddling
15 Infringements FALSE START When a Team starts paddling anytime before the AIR HORN. Starter shall cancel the start with the command STOP! STOP! STOP! The start process shall be repeated Offending team will be given a Final Warning JUMP START When a Team starts paddling between ATTENTION and AIR HORN. Race will be allowed to carry on 5 seconds Time Penalty awarded to offending team LANE VIOLATION When a Team enters the adjacent lane/s or finished in the wrong lane/s. If no distress is caused to other Teams, 5 seconds time penalty will be awarded to the offending team. If distress is caused to other Teams, SDBA-IDBF Collision Rules will apply, the offending team will be disqualified.
16 Safety Rule: Boat Captain Purpose To control the crew s actions getting-in-out and when inside the boat. Responsible for maintaining stability. To manage and control the crew in an emergency. How it Works The Steersperson is the default Boat Captain What to do Give clear and concise commands to the crew to move, stop or stabilize the boat. In an emergency, make sure crew is accounted for by doing a roll-call head-count.
17 Safety Rule: Buddy System Paddler 01 Paddler 03 Paddler 05 Paddler 07 Paddler 09 Head drummer steersman Tail Paddler 02 Paddler 04 Paddler 06 Paddler 08 Paddler 10 1 st Row 2 nd Row 3 rd Row 4 th Row 5 th Row Purpose To give each crew-member a partner for mutual checking and support, especially in an emergency How it Works Pair the paddlers up according to the seating positions ; drummer with the 1 st row ; Steersperson with the last row What to do In an emergency, after checking your own physical condition - check on your buddy. Alert the Boat Captain or Rescuers if your buddy is hurt or missing
18 Safety Rule: Causes of Capsize/Swamping 1. Collisions 2. Lost of stability (too many paddlers moving to/on one side, etc) 3. Crews are not balanced (one side heavier than the other) 4. Steersperson making sudden acute turns

20 Safety Rule: Capsize Drill 1. Stay with the boat, do not attempt to swim away 2. Establish a hand-hold onto the boat to help keep you afloat, right side up 3. Self check for injuries then check on your buddy 4. Boat Captain MUST initiate a roll-call head-count 5. If anyone misses the roll-call, immediately assume he/she is unconsciousness Look around your immediate location 7. If still unable to locate, immediately assume missing member is trapped beneath the boat. Crew to perform a Leg Sweep. 8. Boat Captain MUST inform Rescuers on status of crew
21 Safety Rule: Leg Sweep To be performed whenever there is a missing crew member 2. Always assume missing crew is trapped underneath the capsized boat 3. Boat Captain MUST get remaining crew to hold onto the boat, facing the hull 4. Crew to use their legs to sweep and feel for any object underneath the boat 5. If able, Boat Captain MUST nominate a crew-member to attempt a retrieve OR, if Rescuers on the scene, Boat Captain MUST inform them of someone trapped under the boat 6. If still unable to locate, immediately inform Rescuers of the missing crew member
