1 2018 JULY / NEWSLETTER Kayaking on the Rainbow River June 9th Summer Vacation Activity A Note From The Commodore Ahoy OSC Members, July is planning time for the Ocala Sailing Club to help layout the year s activities and events. We will have the normal monthly meetings, the spring and fall Rum Race series, Margartaville, the around the lake race, Christmas Party and Harpoon National Regatta. We need input for NEW EVENTS from all our club members. Please keep in mind that T.H.E. Admiral is always watching us. Word from Yacht Town Nebraska is that T.H.E. Admiral is displeased with the amount and quality of beer and rafting the OBRS group accomplish this year and has a high expectation of dramatic improvement in the forth coming year. Failure to comply with this order, directive and command will be deemed a Gavel worthy offense. Those whom provide input at the next OBRS July 5th gathering will be noted and those whom failed to comply with this directive will also be noted and rewarded for their lack of effort. Let s get the sailing season off to a good start. Looking forward to your input on July 5th OBRS gathering. 4 Kayaking Rainbow River Our first event during our vacation activities, after our Buccaneer Dinner at La Hacienda, was to paddle the Rainbow River on Saturday, June 9th. We had a decent showing of eight enthusiastic OSC members inspite of a promise of a crowded river and possible showers. We do this trip periodically here since the kayaks can be rented for a very reasonable rate and the Rainbow River is so clear and beautiful. Many members have their own kayaks which can be launched on the east side of the river from the paid launching area. We usually plan to paddle up river and leisurely float back down for refreshments at Swampy s. Page 4

5 Starting out around 9 am is good for beating the Saturday crowd, even then parking is filling up. At the bridge launch you can paddle down stream to the Withlacoochee River or upstream towards the Rainbow Spring. We chose the later and paddled up short of the spring to lunch break at KP Hole. This was Liz Schnebel s maiden voyage. Our recent new OSC member, Jeff Sabri, is an old hand at this and could do it with his eyes closed! She did great! Page 5

6 This was the first day in a series of rainy days and we were glad to have such nice weather in the morning. Although there are houses along much of the river there is still some wild live to encounter. Bob Hay, below, took many photos while paddling his unique Hobie kayak with his feet. Page 6

7 KP Hole Park is about four or five miles up from our bridge launch and makes a good rest stop. This is another popular launching area, especially for tubers who like to float 1- way down river. We encountered many groups of tubers. Rainbow River was bursting with activity by afternoon. Page 7

8 A wave of afternoon showers passed through and cooled us down. It didn t last long and the down river current had us back in familiar territory where we would soon all unite at Swampy s Page 8
