2 Introduction As you work towards becoming a BCU Foundation Safety and Rescue Training (FSRT) Provider, you need to develop the specific skills relating to the role/s. This logbook should help you (and those helping you) through your development. Overleaf is a summary of the critical skills. Please be advised that you must become familiar with the latest version of the FSRT Syllabus, Training Notes, and the supporting documents they make reference to. Please also see the BCU FSRT Videos (on the BCU YouTube Channel), these provide an important tool for standardisation. Logbook Requirements Part 1. Complete BCU FSRT Provider Training (see page 4); this is a one-day training course delivered by the Home Nation Associations. Part 2. In order to achieve the FSRT provider role you need to observe, support and co-deliver BCU FSRT courses with qualified providers. Course Reflections need to be completed (see page 5) for all courses (or parts of courses) observed or worked as an additional member of staff throughout the whole process. Part 3. Once well practiced you need an endorsement that you are competent in the role. The endorsement must be from a current BCU FSRT Provider (see page 6). Your completed Logbook and Course Reflections are submitted to your Home Nation Association for final endorsement (see page 7). BRITISH CANOE UNION 2013 PAGE 2 OF 7
3 FSRT Provider Skills 1. Administration and Organisation Understand requirements, apply/implement: - Course staffing (ratios, roles) - Precourse information and recruitment - Course authorisation - Candidate prerequisites - Special needs and reasonable adjustments - Programme planning - End of course paperwork - End of course feedback - Appeals procedure / other supporting policies - APL - Course cancellation policy - Managing conflicts of interest 2. Use of Venues, Facilities and Resources - Safe learning environment - Appropriate learning environment (planned and used) - Industry standard resources appropriate to candidate needs and syllabus - Appropriate indoor space for course intro etc. - Communication of toilet, changing, showers etc. - Appropriate practical venue/conditions - Cancel (or abort) course if required conditions are not available 3. Tutoring Skills - Appropriate content (linked to syllabus) - Delivery style appropriate to learner needs - Appropriate activities, at appropriate venues - Safe - Create and maintain a high quality enjoyable learning environment - Provide clear introductions and conclusions - Appropriate use of learning resources - Clear communication - Monitor learning - Deployment of other tutors - Provide feedback and action plan - Gain feedback from candidates 4. Syllabus Knowledge and Skills Knowledge and skills in all aspects of: 1. General theory and planning: - Safety - Rescue protocols 2. Bank-based rescues: - Coach a swimmer to shore - Rescue a swimmer with a rigid aid - Rescue a swimmer using a throw line 3. Boat-based rescues: - Rescue a swimmer from the water - Deep water rescue - Unconscious or entrapped paddler - Use of towlines - Self-rescue - All-in rescue 4. Scenarios The ability to teach all aspects of the syllabus to participants using: - Any closed cockpit kayak - Any open cockpit kayak - Any fragile competition craft - Any open canoe - Any sit-on-top kayak or canoe - Any inflatable kayak or canoe - Any stand up paddle board 5. Paddling and Leadership Skills - Environmentally friendly - Appropriate leadership equipment - Communication of expectations of candidates responsibilities - Appropriate risk assessment and risk management strategies - Candidate equipment - Strong personal paddling skills - Strong safety, leadership and group skills BRITISH CANOE UNION 2013 PAGE 3 OF 7
4 BCU Foundation Safety and Rescue Provider Training The Home Nation Associations run a programme of BCU FSRT Provider Training courses, as appropriate to their workforce needs. BCU FRST Provider Training Course Details: Venue: Trainer Name: Membership Number: Trainer Signature: (For office use only) Verification by Home Nation Officer: Action Plan from Provider Training: Record the key development areas and action plan identified from your FSRT Provider Training. This action plan should be developed and agreed with the course trainer and take into consideration the relevant skills identified on page 3. 5 Part 2. Course Reflections You should complete a Course Reflection for all courses observed or worked as an additional member of staff. It is expected that you work with a range of different providers (minimum of two) and at least two different venues. Course Reflections from all courses observed or worked in the 3- year period leading up to the Endorsement of FSRT Provider Skills (see Part 3) need to be submitted with your logbook when complete. Either print or photocopy this page (an electronic version is available from your Home Nation on request). 6 Part 3. Endorsement of FSRT Provider Skills This section is to be completed by an up-to-date Home Nation FSRT Provider. The authorising provider must have delivered at least 3 courses and have attended BCU FSRT Moderation (both within the last 3-years) or have prior approval from the Home Nation Officer. In order to make the final recommendation the provider must have observed your competence through the delivery of a full BCU FSRT course (see page 3 for further details of the skills required).
