2 Hi everyone, we hope you had a great summer with lots of good flying. Still some nice weather left, so go out there and get to it! We had some good events this quarter, including the Giant Scale fly-in and the Chili fly, both with decent weather, and successful. Thanks to Tom Seres, Bill DeWitt, John Fish, and the others who helped out. Coming up this last quarter of 2018 is our annual Swap Meet, which will be held as usual on the Saturday (Nov.24) after Thanksgiving, at the Alexandria Eagles Lodge. Tables are already selling. Thanks to Byron Hamrick for handling the table sales. Details to come! Sadly, we lost good friend and long time member Jerry Riley on October 9th. Godsppeed and tailwinds, Jerry! We hope that you will enjoy this issue of Pit Talk. Next meeting will be held Monday, Nov.12 at Anderson Municipal Airport. Hope to see you there! In memory of Everett (Jerry) Riley Our good friend and long time Club member Jerry Riley passed away on October 9th. I love how he always did his best to show up at meetings and Club functions, even though his health had been declining over the last few years. I first met Jerry many years ago when he was in an Amateur radio club with my dad, and I enjoyed his good nature and sense of humor. Jerry's presence at our meetings and functions will be greatly missed!

3 Giant Scale fly-in Text and photos by Jon Fish Things got off to an early start. Daybreak brought a flurry of activity. We got the concessions set up and had coffee ready first thing. It was a cool morning in sharp contrast to the previous day with temps in 90's. Fliers began filtering in as the morning wore on. With the cool temps and overcast sky coffee was the drink of choice. Though the turn out could have been better Tom Seres put together a good event. We raffled off a PAU electric extra and some other items. Randy Thomas won the electric plane. And a host of others won the other donated prizes. It was a great day for flying despite the cool temps. Got to see some great flying. Yours truly was kept busy with taking photos and running the pop stand. We did sell some stuff but it wasn t a banner year. Thanks to Randy Thomas who purchased all the left overs. I took the left over donuts home and took them to work that Monday morning. They didn t last long there. A big thank you Tom Seres and all who pitched in to make this a great event.

7 Mowing crew misadventures and more... by Byron Hamrick MISADVENTURES OF THE MOWING CREW... Last July while doing our weekly mowing, what to my surprise... while mowing the strip next to the road as I was happily mowing along I was suddenly surrounded by a cloud of ground dwelling bumble bees. seems I had disturbed their ground nest and boy were they aroused to defend their home. Pow...suddenly, I felt a sharp stabbing pain on my middle back (the part you can not reach.) jumped off the running mower (which promptly stopped running) Glad I only got stung once...later retrieved the mower and finished the mowing and began planning the demise of said bee colony... two weeks later on a cool Sunday morning with gasoline in hand I set up watch and waited till finally a bee emerged giving away the exact location of the entrance hole...in went the gasoline which I then ignited and poof they died in flaming agony...after about an hour i took a stick and exposed the entire colony (larger than expected) and yes they were all dead... it is now safe to mow the field... Tidbits of experience: or Byron's follies: my spectrum 7 due to use and abuse had a broken antennae at the base where it swivels..wanting to keep it somewhat erect I wrapped electrical black tape on the base to give some strength...dumb ass thing to do I failed to realize or think that ooh ya electrical tape is an insulator to electricity...also to radio signals... kept flying and couldn't figure out why I was getting intermittent glitches on my planes in the air...actually lost the something extra...it went out of control and exploded at full throttle into the ditch bank and fell back into the water...boy was that water cold as I had to pull up my pants legs and wade into the water to retrieve the engine and electronics(hope the receiver dries out and returns to use). Tom Kelley rescued my transmitter by drilling a hole in the base and inserting a stabilizing pin thus solving my signal problems. thanks Tom! Now my signal is pure and flying is once again joyful. Chili fly was fun but rather windy conditions. food was good but the fellowship was better. good to see so many flyers gathered and flying... Club meeting last night was brief with the usual 8 members in attendance. The night fly later was also fun but seems we only have 2 night flyers available... Happy trails and good flying! Byron

8 Randy's big win From Randy Thomas: Thanks to the club I have a new airplane. I was the winning ticket at our giants scale flying in. Enclosed I have a picture of the airplane, assembled and ready to fly. Hope to be at the chili fly in tomorrow, and get its second flight in. What...you've never seen a dog flying a Pitts before?

10 Meeting minutes Meeting minutes for August Monday evening flying was interrupted by a meeting. Vice President Tom Seres filling in for the ill president Art Frye, Brought the meeting to order with 12 members present. First order was business was Secretary Bill Hallsworth resigning as secretary. Bill has taken a job with NASA and will be moving to Alabama. Jon Fish was reigned in as the new Secretary and will be finishing out the year fulfilling those duties. We all wish Bill the best of luck in his new endeavor. We also want to thank Bill for his years of service as secretary. He did an excellent job. No minutes were available from the July Meeting. Nothing to vote on here folks. Treasurer Mike Sharp gave the financial report. All is rosy and we have a couple of dollars to work with. Motion was made to accept the report as read. It seconded and voted unanimous. The Treasurers report will stand as read. Mike Sharp brought up the fabric taxiway needs attention. a work detail will be put together to repair or replace the taxiway. Date for this is set for Saturday Aug 18 at 1:00 pm weather permitting. Notifications will go via and Facebook. We have secured the Alexandria Eagles Lodge again this year for our annual swap meet. The date is Saturday November 24. Mark that on your calanders folks. Byron said that this year he is not accepting. prepayments for tables. He said this causes too much confusion. All payments will be made at the door. Byron said he is still accepting reservations for tables. So not to worry. The Giant Scale Meet was brought up date is set for Saturday September 22. The Chili Fly-In was also brought up Date For that is Saturday Oct 6 It was also brought up to thank our Landlord Randy Webb for mowing the ditches. Tom Seres Made Motion to adjourn and everyone went back to flying. That s all folks See you at the next meeting. Keep em flying Jon Meeting minutes 9/10/2018 President Art Frye brought the meeting to order with 9 members present. This months meeting was held at the Anderson airport due to weather. No minutes were available for this months meeting check the next newsletter, Mike Sharp gave the treasures report. Mike mentioned he was handed some money for something. We have a mystery donor. Motion was made to accept the treasurers as read. Tom Deres discussed the giant scale event coming up on Sept. 22. Help is needed in all areas. Registration, selling raffle tickets, and concessions. We have dome raffle items but more is needed. Some thing new in a packaging. Jon fish will handle the concessions as usual. Same people doing the same stuff. Bill DeWitt mentioned we had over 4 1/2 of rain in the last 4 days. But there has been no standing water in the field.

11 Jon Fish Mentioned the Chili Fly-in date is October 6 with a night fly to follow 1 p.m. start time. Bill DeWitt wife is making the Chili. This also be a pitch in. as far as food. Friends and family are also invited. It was mentioned that there is hole in floor of the main building that needs to be repaired. Critters are getting in. Bill said he would get a piece of metal to cover the hole. Byron Hamrick made motion to to adjourn.
