1 MARCH 2017 Tavelli Elementary Mission Statement Tavelli Elementary is a school of academics, character and wellness. Our mission is to ENGAGE students for academic and social success. We will INSPIRE a community of diverse learners through collaboration and accountability so our children will SUCCEED in a global society. it s a note from the principal... Hello Everyone, It is hard to believe that we re already heading into the month of March. Time seems to only speed up as the year goes on. We start this month off with our Annual Read-A-Thon on March 3 rd. This great event has been organized by our Tavelli PTO and we really appreciate all the hard work and time spent throughout the year by this great group of parents. This is always a great event, and we couldn t do it without the support of our PTO. We are pleased to have Karla Oceanak as our guest author and Kendra Spanjer as our guest illustrator. Students always enjoy this assembly and can t wait for the Cat in the Hat and Thing 1 and Thing 2 to visit their classrooms. Our 3 rd grade will be presenting Blast to the Past on March 8 th and 9 th. March 8 th will be a morning performance beginning at 10:00AM. March 9 th will be a morning and evening performance starting at 10:00AM and 6:00 PM. 2 Page 2 Tavelli Elementary School Newsletter MARCH 2017 A Note From the Principal continued The Colorado State Assessment, PARCC will begin a little later this year. April 4th is the start day for grades 3-5. Fourth graders will also be taking the social studies assessment while the 5 th graders will take the science assessment. The Battle of the Books is quickly approaching. Thanks to Laurie Fuller, Rob Deakin, Joy Gribble, and all our parent volunteers for donating your time to make this a great event for our students. Students love this event and it is fun to watch them showcase all their hard work by answering many questions about the books they have read. The Tavelli date for Battle of the Books will be on March 31 st in the gym. Fifth grade will be from (9:50-10:35), 3 rd grade from (10:50-11:35), and 4 th grade from (12:04 12:50). Winning teams will move on to the District Competition in April. Please come out and support and celebrate the hard work of all the students who have committed to this challenge. A card is $11 and can be redeemed for a large pizza from Old Chicago a $23 value! Stop by the office and pick up a card today, and help support our awardwinning Dream Team Program. Tavelli 3 rd Graders to Perform Blast to the Past Please join our 3 rd grade students as they present their STEAM Encore Musical: It is the year 2210 when one of the biggest tourism industries is Time travel Historical Tours. The Conductor of Engine #9 guides guests on a tour of 5 historical events frim The Blast to the Past tour witnesses Martin Luther King Jr. s I Have a Dream speech, Mark Twain piloting his steamboat, Amelia Earhart s last flight, Davy Crockett s last stand and a celebration of the beauty of America with Katharine Lee Bates. Performances for the school are March 8 th and 9 th at 10:00 and March 9 th at 6:00 p.m. for the Tavelli Community.

4 Page 4 Tavelli Elementary School Newsletter MARCH 2017 Congratulations to Kyleigh Abshire! Third grade student Kyleigh Abshire was chosen to represent Tavelli in the 2107 SuperArt! Show, which took place at the PSD Johannsen Support Services Center. Kyleigh received a certificate from the Superintendent at the reception January 31 st. Her artwork will be hanging in the JSSC for a full year. Way to go Kyleigh!

There may be many things you don t agree with, but think about it from a science point of view. What is wrong with this picture that science says can t be the case? Are you up for the challenge? When you think you have figured out the scientific error, come to the Science/Engineering Lab, after the first bell at 8:50 and before the second, to explain your solution to Mrs. Musante to earn a prize.

6 Page 6 Tavelli Elementary School Newsletter MARCH th Grade Eco-columns! For the past few weeks, the 4th graders at Tavelli have been discovering the symbiosis of ecosystems in our world. They have created their own living ecosystems. The ecosystem includes an aquarium and a terrarium that live together. Each system has just a taste of what the real world has to offer. Producers, consumers and decomposers. The students first construct the aquarium, where they measure out cured water for the home of the Algae (producer) Duckweed (producer) and Elodea (producer). The plants are plucked at by a Mosquito Fish (consumer). He/she is not alone in the matter, they are partnered with the trusty Snail (decomposer). The students read about how these three organisms live together in harmony. The aquarium is the base of the eco column and will hoist the terrarium where there are three more types of organisms, can you guess which is the producer, consumer and decomposer? In the terrarium we grew plants from seeds, Mustard, Grass, and Alfalfa. We placed a cricket and an isopod (rollie-pollie) in with the dirt and growing plants. 9 Page 9 Tavelli Elementary School Newsletter MARCH 2017 Lunch Menus Click here to view the March Lunch Menu A Message From PTO About Our Scholastic Book Fair Dear Tavelli Families, We are excited to announce a new program in conjunction with our Book Fair this Spring. In addition to it being our annual Buy One, Get One Free Book Fair, we are implementing a Give a Book program. This program is designed to provide books for the many Tavelli Students who cannot afford to buy books at the Book Fair. While those students who can buy books love the book fair, for many, it is disappointing to go to the fair and not be able to buy one. Thus, we are implementing the Give a Book Program. The way this will work is we are asking all students to consider donating books they have previously purchased through a Scholastic Book order, or the Book fair. We will be collecting books through the month of March. Parents should ensure these books are age appropriate (K-5). Students who donate books will earn a Tiger Ticket (1 ticket for up to 5 books, 2 tickets for up to 10, etc). A book drop box will be located in the Library. Students should let their teacher know they brought books to earn their Tiger Ticket(s) and drop them off in the collection box. During the Book Fair (the week of March 27), Teachers will give those students who cannot afford books the opportunity to go to the Book Fair and select a free book from those donated. If your child cannot buy a book at the Book Fair, please ensure their teacher is aware of this and they will make sure your child gets a book. The success of this program depends on students donating books, so if you are able to do so, we ask that you take a little time during the next few weeks to clean off your bookshelf and donate to this program.
