1 SYN-86 TECHNICAL BULLETINApril 216 Synovex One-Feedlot Implnts in Feedlot Steers: Phse IIIB Studies in Nersk nd Texs Zoetis Florhm Prk, NJ 7932 Summry Two Phse IIIB studies 1,2 were conducted in feedlot steers to compre the effects of Synovex One-Feedlot (Synovex One), Revlor -, nd Synovex Plus implnted 16 nd 2 dys prior to hrvest on growth performnce nd crcss chrcteristics. In the Nersk study, 1 pens of 8 feedlot eef steers were ech implnted with, Synovex Plus, or Synovex One 16 dys prior to hrvest, nd in the Texs study, 1 pens of 1 feedlot steers were ech implnted with, Synovex Plus or Synovex One 2 dys prior to hrvest. Growth performnce ws mesured t selected intervls nd overll during the tretment period nd crcsses were evluted in locl commercil hrvest plnts. Growth performnce during the tretment period did not differ mong the tretment groups. However, there were differences mong tretments during intermedite intervls. In the Nersk study, verge dily gin (ADG) nd gin efficiency (GE) for the first 49 dys were less for Synovex One thn for Synovex Plus nd. In the Texs study, ADG nd GE for the first 75 dys were less for Synovex One thn for Synovex Plus ut not. In contrst, ADG nd GE during dys 49 to 98 in the Nersk study nd dys 75 to 14 in the Texs study for Synovex One ws greter thn for Synovex Plus ut not. Also, in the Texs study, ADG nd GE during the period from 14 dys to finl were less for Synovex Plus thn for Synovex One nd which did not differ from ech other. Crcss chrcteristics ssocited with lenness or crcss qulity were not differentilly ffected y tretment in either study. F ew eef cttle mngement prctices re more cost-effective or provide higher return on investment (ROI) thn growth promoting implnts. Becuse cttle feedlots operte on nrrow profit mrgins, costs of production re criticlly importnt nd the ROI for implnts is greter thn for ny other technology. Of the vriety of implnts used routinely in the commercil feedlot industry, most hve durtion rnging from 6 to 12 dys nd typicl progrms include re-implnttion. Although re-implnttion is sometimes comined with other prophylctic tretments nd vccintions, it is ssocited with dditionl costs of hndling nd possile loss of performnce. Thus, use of single implnt tht mintins production enefits over n entire finishing
2 period cn e of significnt vlue to the producer compred to re-implnt strtegies. is long-cting implnt with durtion of pproximtely 2 dys. The durtion of ctivity of Synovex Plus hs een extended to 2 dys with the use of new long-cting coting (Synovex One-Feedlot). This ulletin compres the growth performnce nd crcss responses of feedlot steers implnted with Synovex One-Feedlot (Synovex One) with those of steers implnted with nd Synovex Plus for 16 nd 2 dys efore hrvest. 1,2 Experiment Design In the Nersk study, rndomized lock design consisting of 1 locks of 24 cttle nd 3 tretment groups ws used. In the Texs study, rndomized lock design consisting of 1 locks of 3 cttle nd 3 tretment groups ws used. The 3 tretment groups, dministered 16 nd 2 dys prior to slughter for the Nersk nd Texs study, respectively, were: implnt contining 2 mg TBA nd 2 mg estrdiol; Synovex Plus implnt contining 2 mg TBA nd 2 mg estrdiol (in the form of 28 mg estrdiol enzote); Synovex One implnt contining 2 mg TBA nd 2 mg estrdiol (in the form of 28 mg estrdiol enzote) coted with polymer to extend durtion of relese. After the completion of the growth performnce phse of ech study, the nimls were hrvested t commercil eef processing fcilities nd crcss dt were otined. Animls were of typicl reeds for ech loction nd were housed in pens tht were outdoors nd nturlly lighted nd ventilted. Animls were fed d liitum rtion typicl of the re once dily. No other growth promoters or feed dditives (ionophores, in-feed ntiiotics, etc.) were fed during the study. In the Nersk study, nimls were weighed on dys -1, (the men of dys -1 nd = initil weight), 49, 98, 16, nd 161 (the men of dys 16 nd 161 = finl weight). In the Texs study, nimls were weighed on dys -2, (the men of dys -2 nd = initil weight), 75, 14, 199 nd 2 (the men of dys 199 nd 2 = finl weight). In oth studies, feed offered ws mesured dily nd feed refused ws weighed on intermedite nd finl weigh dys. Crcss dt were mesured t hrvest nd Wrner-Brtzler sher force vlues were determined fter 14 dys of ging. Results Body weights In the Nersk study, ody weights of Synovex One-implnted nimls on dy 49, were lower (P.5) thn those of -implnted nd Synovex Plus-implnted nimls (Figure 1). By the end of the study, ody weights did not differ mong Body weight (l) Study dy Figure 1 Body weights (l) recorded in Nersk nd Texs studies. 5 1 Study dy 15 P.5 2 2
3 tretment groups. In the Texs study, ody weights of Synovex One-implnted nimls on dy 75 were lower (P.5) thn those of Synovex Plus-implnted nimls ut not -implnted nimls. Growth performnce In oth the Nersk nd Texs studies, there were no differences in finl verge dily gin (ADG), feed intke, or gin efficiency (GE) mong the 3 tretments (Figures 2 nd 3). Feed efficiency dt were not nlyzed. However, ADG nd GE differed during intermedite intervls (Figures 4 nd 5). In the Nersk study (Figure 4), ADG nd GE during the first 49 dys for Synovex One were less (P.5) thn for nd Synovex Plus nd for Synovex Plus GE ut not ADG ws greter (P.5) thn for. During the intervl from dy 49 to 98, ADG nd GE for Synovex One were greter (P.5) thn for Synovex Plus ut not. In the Texs study (Figure 5), ADG nd GE during the first 75 dys, for Synovex One were less (P.5) thn for Synovex Plus ut not, nd vlues for did not differ from those of Synovex Plus. During the intervl from dy 75 to 14, ADG ws greter (P.5) for Synovex One thn for Synovex Plus ut not, which did not differ from Synovex Plus. During the intervl from dy 14 to finl, oth ADG nd GE were greter (P.5) for Synovex One nd thn for Synovex Plus ut did not differ from ech other. 6 Economic Return on Investment The slight differences in growth performnce nd crcss chrcteristics would not e expected to sustntilly ffect economic return in either study. Conclusions Use of the 2-dy Synovex One implnt resulted in growth performnce nd crcss qulities not different from or Synovex Plus over oth 16-dy nd 2- dy growth periods. Growth performnce - ADG nd feed efficiency did not differ mong tretment groups during the durtion of the study. However, ADG nd GE for Synovex One were lower thn those of Synovex Plus during the first third of ech study nd were higher or trended higher thn those of Synovex Plus during the second (oth loctions) nd lst third (Texs) of the study. Crcss chrcteristics - No chrcteristics differed mong tretment groups. 6
