The School Breakfast Detectives campaign allows students to clue into the importance of school breakfast and will help you demonstrate how eating school breakfast sets them up for a busy day at school. This fun private-eye themed campaign features a design contest and a number of nutrition puzzles to encourage kids to become school breakfast detectives on their own! The campaign runs from January to March 2011, culminating in National School Breakfast Week, March 7-11, The School Nutrition Association (SNA), General Mills, the National Dairy Council and the U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council are excited to bring you great tools and resources to promote the School Breakfast Detectives Campaign. 1

What is National School Breakfast Week (NSBW)? National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) was launched in 1989 to raise awareness about the availability of the School Breakfast Program (SBP). Each year, SNA helps you celebrate this important week with a fun theme and supporting resources and ideas to help increase participation in your breakfast program. The goals of NSBW are to share several important messages with students, parents and the media: n T he SBP is available at your school; meals meets federal dietary guidelines; and, best of all, it is a tasty and fun way to start the school day! n T here is an established link between eating breakfast and academic success. n E ating a nutritious breakfast can help kids maintain a healthy weight. In today s climate of heightened awareness around childhood obesity, this is a great benefit to offer at school. 2

Campaign Highlights School Breakfast Detectives Participation Sweepstakes School Breakfast Detectives Book Cover Contest Tell us what you are doing to celebrate NSBW and how the School Breakfast Detectives campaign has impacted your school breakfast participation levels and community awareness of school breakfast. Simply complete the participation sweepstakes form and you will be entered for the chance to win stickers for you school. New this year is a design contest, where students will have the opportunity to design their own school breakfast detective on a book cover. Students should also title their book with a healthy message such as The Case of the Missing Breakfast. Three national winners will receive a prize pack. The local contests will run January 1, 2011 to March 11, 2011, and national entries are due March 31, Find out more at or on page 11. At the end of January, February and March 2011, we will randomly pick 10 winners (30 total) to receive sticker packs for your school. Find out more at Checklists for Serving Breakfast Outside of the Cafeteria Thinking of serving breakfast in the classroom or setting up a breakfast cart? SNA has compiled a valuable checklist that will help you think through the answers to some basic but crucial questions for planning your alternative breakfast program. The checklist is included on pages 8-9 of this toolkit and is available to download separately from 3

Celebration Ideas & Publicizing Your Event Need some ideas for School Breakfast Detective events, decorations, games and other participation-boosting activities for NSBW 2010? Check out our list below: You Could... n Hold a treasure or scavenger hunt in your cafeteria or classrooms. Set up stations with nutrition based activities (you can use the activity sheets provided by SNA as a starting point) and have students follow the clues. n Get your students to enter the School Breakfast Detectives Book Cover Contest. n Decorate the cafeteria with School Breakfast Detectives themed materials available from the SNA Emporium. n Hold a Dress Like your Favorite Detective Day and see who comes as Inspector Gadget or Kim Possible. n Invite parents and other special guests for breakfast during NSBW. n Offer prizes to the classroom with the highest participation during NSBW. n Use SNA s suggested breakfast menus to showcase healthy, nutritious school breakfasts. n Hold an assembly about the importance of eating a balanced school breakfast using the fun detective theme to introduce nutrition information. n Ask students to write essays about their favorite detective and how this person is a positive role model. n Show detective shows or cartoons during breakfast such as Spy-Kids for the younger audience and Mission Impossible for high school students. n During breakfast, allow kids to play board games such as Clue Jr. or Sleuth. n Ask kids to observe and record foods eaten at home in a food diary. How many healthy or unhealthy foods did they spy? 4

How to Publicize Your Events and Activities n Add information about your school and your planned NSBW activities to the sample news release found at nsbw. n Ask local dietitians, pediatricians, teachers, parents and students how they view the school breakfast program, and, with permission, use any positive comments in the releases. n Print the press release on your own letterhead and list yourself as the contact. Send it to your media contacts about 10 days prior to NSBW. n Get others involved! Speak to teachers, administrators, parents and others to gather support for a NSBW celebration. Make sure it is included on official school district calendars. n Publicize NSBW on the back of your school menus and in school newspapers. Thank You! This year s National School Breakfast Week menus were provided by members of SNA s Nutrition Committee. SNA extends its thanks to Julia Bauscher, RD, SNS, Nutrition Committee chair, for overseeing this project and to Martha Dysart, SNS, Jefferson County (Ky.) Public Schools, for compiling the nutrient analyses. n Order and copy the NSBW 2011 backpack brochure and activity sheets to distribute to students. Find out more at 5

School Breakfast Detective Resources SNA has put together an utility belt packed with fun and useful resources to help you solve the Case of School Breakfast. Take a look and decide which tools can help you crack the code for celebration success! Menus SNA has put together 5 special NSBW menus to help your students clue in to school breakfast. These include Private Eye Pancakes with Blueberry Topping and I-Spy a Sausage Biscuit. Each menu includes healthy preparation tips to help ensure they meet good health guidelines. These menus are also a great way to get the NSBW message out, while increasing participation. The menus can be found in the April issue of School Nutrition magazine or online at Our special member website has a complete array of useful tools and celebration ideas to help make you ready for a successful NSBW, including: n 5 breakfast menus for NSBW n This toolkit n Alternative breakfast planning checklists n Design contest rules and forms n Backpack brochures for students and parents n Downloadable presentations n Press release and proclamation n Activity sheets n Banner ads for school websites n Permission form for logo usage 6

Parent/Student Brochure This glossy color backpack brochure is great for spreading the school breakfast message to students and parents. The brochure outlines how the school nutrition program works and the benefits of eating a healthy school breakfast. The backpack brochure is a great way to widen your influence outside of the cafeteria. The brochure is available to order from SNA s Emporium in packs of 100 and is free (you just pay shipping). Contact SNA s Emporium at (800) or visit emporium.schoolnutrition.org. You can also download the brochure and print it at your school, by visiting org/nsbw. School Breakfast Detectives Merchandise To really make a splash in your cafeteria, purchase themed breakfast week materials from SNA s Emporium. There is a wide range of bright, fun items such as t-shirts, aprons and baseball caps, as well as posters, pencils, balloons and other small giveaways for your students. Call SNA s Emporium at (800) or visit us online at emporium.schoolnutrition.org. PR Support Materials One of the best ways to make your breakfast celebration a hit is to invite local media to cover the event. SNA has a sample NSBW press release to help you get the attention your school deserves. Simply download and modify to fit your needs at or call SNA Headquarters for further information at (800) Proclamation If you like things official, then you will love our NSBW proclamation. A proclamation is a good way to add some ceremony to your breakfast week celebrations by having the mayor or another dignitary sign and attest it. You may download a sample proclamation at org/nsbw. Logos and School Breakfast Detective Artwork The official full-color School Breakfast Detective logos are available for use in helping to promote your breakfast program and NSBW. Why not add these logos to your menus, your web site, bulletin board or school magazine/newspaper? To request the official logos and images, submit our easy logo request form, found at www. schoolnutrition.org/nsbw. 7
