Failure to follow all rules established by: Esperanza High School and Esperanza Dance Team Code of Conduct

4 e. Unauthorized transportation to or from away events * Suspensions apply to performances only, not practice. Length of suspension will be determined by the dance team advisor/coach. If, at the end of the grading period, the member is still not eligible for performance, it will be left to the discretion of the director & department head, whether to extend the probation or to drop the student from the team. 9. PRACTICES, PERFORMANCES A. Attendance is required for all practices and performances. In general, schedules are given out at the beginning of each month to facilitate personal commitments. Members are expected to schedule personal commitments around dance team. B. The only excuse for missing a practice or performances is illness or family emergency. The advisor should be notified prior to missing a performance. Failure to do so will result in the member being placed as an alternate as well as the grade being lowered. The second infraction will result in dismissal from the team. Personal appointments are expected to be made around the team schedule. C. Jobs will not be an excuse for missing any practice or performance. It is highly recommended that work be kept to a minimum. D. All practices the week prior to competition are MANDATORY. If a dancer misses a practice the week of competition they will be sat from competition. 10. Competitions A. The dance team maintains and utilizes the alternate system. All team members will be required to tryout for a spot on the competition team. Periodically the team will re-tryout during the season. No member is guaranteed a spot on the competition team. This use of alternates also allows for coverage in case of injuries, illness and discipline. Once a member is pulled from the competition spot, for whatever reason, she must compete for a spot at the next tryout. B. The size, members, and divisions of all competition teams will be determined by the dance team advisor/coach. C. The dance coach may adjust the composition of the teams to allow for maximum competitive success. D. There are no guarantees that any dance team member will get to compete. However, members who are diligent about meeting their responsibilities, come to practice regularly, and show adequate skill development will be given every consideration. E. Competitions are a privilege not a right. All dance team members interested in competing are expected to abide by and comply with the Esperanza High School Dance Team Code of Conduct and Philosophy. 11. BANQUET A. All dance team members are expected to attend the end of the year banquet where each student will receive a certificate and special awards if certain criteria are met.

5 12. COST AND EXPENSES A. Students who participate in the dance team are encouraged to support the program by submitting donations. The donations will help to cover the cost of uniforms, costumes, coaching fees, etc. Donations are voluntary and all students will be allowed to participate regardless of weather donations are made. Approximate expenses are: Dance Cal State Fullerton $ Summer EHS $ Dance Class $12.00 per class/ week Team Bags & Warm-Ups $ Team Gear $ Indoor costumes $ Travel $1, Misc. including ASB cards, photos, $ transportation, etc. B. Miscellaneous expenses occur occasionally throughout the year. During spring competition and dance production additional items may be required. Costs to the families in tickets to attend performances, secret sisters, etc., may be higher 13. FUNDRAISING A. Fundraising is expected and required of each member. Fundraising is necessary for general supplies, competition fees, dance production; team owned costumes, props, and other miscellaneous expenses. B. It is mandatory for families to participate in all fundraisers. 14. TRYOUT PROCEDURE AND SELECTION OF THE TEAM A. The cover sheet is due to Kenndra Alvarez by Monday, May 18 th, This enables the grade verification and discipline process to be completed prior to the workshop. B. Candidates must turn in their most recent grade report from their online Aeries account. Please turn one in for each class you are enrolled in attached to your cover sheet. If you cannot get your grades off Aeries please submit a signed note from each teacher stating your current grade in the class. C. A candidate must attend all practices in the workshop. All material required for tryouts are taught during the workshop. Previous dance training is a requirement and expected by all students trying out. D. The coach/advisor of the dance team program will have the final say in who is selected for the team. The following criteria will be used in the selection process: a. Evaluation of the applicant s progress and skill as demonstrated throughout the clinic week. b. Evaluation of the applicant s attitude and behavior as demonstrated throughout the clinic week. c. Previous experience with the applicant - both in terms of skills and attitude/behavior. d. The applicant s discipline history as seen in their discipline file and citizenship grades. E. The team size is selected by a natural break in the points, usually around members. Consideration is given for longrange program stability. A balance in membership is preferred in all grade levels to avoid unusually high turnover from year to year. F. Tryouts are closed to spectators. ***Questions Kenndra Alvarez at esperanzadance@yahoo.com***

6 ESPERANZA DANCE TEAM CODE OF CONDUCT By accepting the privilege/honor of being a member of the Esperanza Dance Team, the member accepts the fact that they must uphold a higher standard of conduct than those not associated with such an activity. 1. The uniform and clothes that represent this organization must be respected at all times and are not to be loaned out. 2. Proper appearance is required at all times, with clothing appropriate to the occasion as stated by the Esperanza High School Dress Code. 3. As a member of the dance team, no member shall be guilty of attracting undesirable attention to herself, the team, the school or community (i.e. using foul language, fighting, cheating, using drugs or alcohol, smoking, etc.). 4. Excessive public displays of affection are never considered appropriate, especially in uniform or while representing the school. 5. Each member is expected to be on time as specified by the director, for all dance team functions. 6. Each member is expected to give her full cooperation to the director and coaches, those designated as officers of the team, and to all members of the team at all times. If there is a question of authority, it is to be handled in the proper manner by making an appointment with the director to clear the matter up. 7. Each member shall participate in ALL DANCE TEAM ACTIVITIES & FUNCTIONS, unless otherwise cleared with the director in advance (preferably three weeks). 8. Missing a scheduled rehearsal the week of a performance, may result in suspension from the performance. Suspension is dependent on the absence being excused or non-excused and the impact it has on the performing group. 9. Any unexcused absence from a performance is grounds for suspension and/or dismissal. 10. Tutoring appointments and doctor appointments are NOT to be made during scheduled practice times! 11. Missing an added-on rehearsal at which major routine changes are made, may result in performance suspension for that particular event if it is too close to the performance. 12. Members must dress in appropriate practice clothing during all rehearsals. 13. Members are not to leave rehearsals early, and in the spirit of this; the director will try her utmost to end rehearsals at the scheduled time. 14. Because all situations may not be foreseen and thus outlined here, each will be dealt with in a manner decided upon by the director, with the assistance of the department head and/or administration as is deemed necessary. 15. Inappropriate behaviors not only reflect on the individual, but can also affect the image of the entire team and the school. Therefore, decisions will be made based on the good of the school first, the team second, ad the individual third. 16. All members are not only expected to uphold the letter of the code of conduct, but also the spirit of it. Be a positive and productive member of your Dance team.
