Greetings Fellow Aviators, President s Message Well if you re not out flying these days, you ve definitely been missing out on some excellent flying conditions. It s time for all you last minute people to renew your ORCC and MAAC memberships if you haven t done so and get out there and take advantage of our early flying season. As per the that our Field Manager Doug has sent out, we are calling on all the member s to come out to the ongoing work parties and help get the required improvement work under way. Please check the ORCC Google calendar for info on what is being done. Our primary concern is to get the necessary work on the new runway completed so we can have it seeded ASAP. Thanks to all the help from some of our members who have been out recently getting the area cleared and as level as possible in preparation for the topsoil to be laid. The meeting on April 3rd is our Annual Concourse d Elegance. Bring in your projects you have worked so vigorously on over the winter and show it off. We are changing the prize format from how it s been done in the past. Please see details to follow in this newsletter. Don t forget to check the schedule of events coming up at our Club as well as others in the area and get out and participate. There is something for everyone. We have our Heli Event coming up in May so all you rotary pilots should be getting your Whirley Birds tuned up and ready to go. All of those who said they are interested in helping with the running of events should be getting in touch with the various Chairpersons and pitch in. 1

Everyone is invited to bring in their new projects for everyone to admire. Even if your project is not fully complete, please bring it in anyway so that we can enjoy it. The whole point of having a Concourse is to encourage people to build, and to recognize those who do build. Members of ORCC are eligible to win prizes. The prize will be awarded to the person who built the model, if the person who owns the model is not the builder. Non-members are encouraged to bring in their models for display, but are not eligible to win prizes. Attendees will vote for their favourite models in the following categories: Best Overall Scale This is a scale model of a "real" aircraft which has either been assembled from a kit or scratch built. It can be an airplane, helicopter, sailplane, or any other type of aircraft. An example would be a Cessna 210 or a Bell 202. 5 Just for Laughs. ORCC s March Club Meeting.. Some fun things to do the next time you're on one of those long international flights to kill time... Pinch the stewardess' butt as she passes. When two people kiss in the in flight movie, belch real loud. When there's any nudity, hoot really loudly for a few minutes. John Weekes providing his expertise on EDF (Electric Ducted Fan) Jets. Fart loudly and act shocked, looking around to see who did it. Fiddle around with the emergency exit, then ask a fellow passenger if he has a crowbar. Hijack the cockpit and, over the loudspeaker, announce that the first class passengers and luggage are to switch places. Run down the aisle screaming, "He's got a bomb! He's got a bomb!". Go into the bathroom and make rude bodily noises, then come out looking refreshed. Nice turnout! 5
6 Give someone a coin, saying "Heads, I detonate the bomb. Tails, I don't". And the Winner is.. Early Bird Draw Winner of Free 1 Year ORCC Membership. Go into the bathroom, drop your pants, then come out, yelling "We're out of toilet paper! Stewardess!". Describe your sex life in great detail to the hottie next to you. Lead a bible study session in the back of the plane. Remark that perhaps you shouldn't have put super glue in your underpants that morning. Pick your nose and pat the person next to you. Show off your Batman underwear. Switch accents and see if anyone notices. William Walton Wear ORCC proudly! Sneak into the cockpit and hit the warning alarm. Scratch your butt, then sniff your finger. Go into the cockpit, flick on the intercom light, then loudly inquire as to why the fuel dial says "e". Go into the cockpit, ask the pilot in an obnoxious voice "Why do they call it the COCKpit?" then snort as if it's the funniest thing in the world. Sneeze, using somebody's sleeve instead of your hand to cover it. Hats $17.50 T-shirts $18.00 for sizes Sm to XL. XXL or larger $21.00 If you would like your call sign embroidered on the sleeve, the first 20 members are free so order early! After that, it is $5.00 extra per shirt. Available in various colours. For more details and to place an order, please contact Doug Glover at doug.glover@sympatico.ca or by phone at
7 Ride carry-on luggage down the aisle, yelling "Yeee-ha!". With a desperate look, ask the stewardess where the bathroom is, then look relieved and say "Never mind. Do you have any towels?". of the Month (From Rick Ward) Jump up and scream "AAAHHH!! I left the stove on!!". If someone has a bad toupee, whack it off. Pretend you're flying the plane. Get some rub-on tattoos and a leather jacket, pretend that you belong to a biker gang. Take over the plane with a toy gun. To the person next to you, say "It's amazing that they didn't notice the grenade in my luggage. 7
8 For the Ladies.. Final Report on Indoor Flying for Paul Penna Chairman, Indoor Flight Women's Problems Ever notice how all of women's problems start with men? - MEN tal illness - MEN strual cramps - MEN tal breakdown - MEN opause - GUY necologist - And when we have real trouble, it's a...his terectomy. The Real Definition of Words When Used By Women: Fine - I am right. This argument is over. You need to shut up. That's Okay - One of the most dangerous statements a women can make to a man. "That's okay" means she wants to think hard and long before deciding when and how you'll pay for your mistake. We have had all five evening sessions of indoor flying that were planned for Carleton University s Field House. By the time your read this, there will only be one more mid-day session at the RA Centre remaining and that is Saturday, April 7 th. We had a great season, what with all of these ready-to-fly ultra-micro models that are showing up, not to mention the arrival of these amazing quadra-copters. With on-board stabilization systems, these little four-rotor wonders can sit at altitude and hover with hardly any guidance from the pilot. But when the pilot wants to scoot it around the gym, they are very responsive. On the other hand, many of our attendees have built models from the Stevens Aeromodel line of ultra-light, balsa-framed planes that use a receiver, linear servos, speed controller and geared, brushed motor from Park Zone. For example go to: So in other words, when you crash and total your Park Zone P-51 Mustang ultra-micro war bird (for example), you throw away the airframe and use all of the electronics, etc., in your newly constructed Stevens Aeromodel micro plane. So now you have some scope for covering these little balsa models in your own preferred colour scheme. For any of us who grew up in the days of free-flight models constructed from balsa sticks and tissue covering, seeing these little Stevens Aeromodel cuties toodling around the gym under full radio control is just so cool. We would like to thank Great Hobbies for donating five gift certificates (one for each session) to our Carleton University season. We really appreciated having these prizes to hand out to the pilots who won the combat events. So on to next year. In August, we will probably send out an announcement for the indoor flying season at Carleton University. This announcement will be a call for interest, to let us know if there are enough pilots to support the rental of Carleton s Field House. If you would like to receive that announcement, please let me know via and I will make sure that you are on the list. We don t know what the fee will be exactly, but for this season just ended, we required $110 per person for 5 sessions at Carleton and we restricted the number of pilots to 25. Hopefully, the cost will be similar for next year as well. Once we have received replies of interest from 25 pilots, we know we can go ahead and sign a contract with Carleton for the rental of their Field House. We intend to book five sessions again at Carleton if there is enough interest. Until then, have a great summer flying outdoor R/C! 8
9 Nothing - The calm before the storm. This means "Something" and you better be on your toes. Note: Arguments that start with "Nothing" usually end with "Fine" (See #1). 5. Five Minutes - If getting dressed, this means half an hour. (Don't be mad about this. It's the same definition for you when it's your turn to do some chores around the house.) Thanks - A woman is thanking you. Do not question this or faint. Just say, "You're welcome," and let it go. Loud Sigh - Not actually a word but rather a nonverbal statement often misunderstood by men. It means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is standing here wasting her time arguing with you about "Nothing." (See #3) Go Ahead - This is a dare, not permission. (Don't Do It!) The Battle for Runway 27 09:00 Saturday March 24: Drummond Field It was a battle of the Titans! The "Axis of Evil" (rocks, boulders, trees and roots) were well dug in, threatening to defend to the death, their long held territory on future Runway 27. Sure they had been softened up by an earlier Rick Ward carpet bombing unleashed with his trusty pickup and harrow, but the Axis was still a formidable foe. "Flyboy" Flaherty here, your fearless war correspondent, attached in the field, to the ORCC runway assault team. And an impressive team it was too: Rowan, Cronin, Poplawski and Lavictoire on rakes; Toner and Neidy on the tree extraction detail; Mortimer on wheelbarrow; shovels manned by Nixon, Glover, Rudat, Fern and others this reporter has yet to identify. Heavy mechanized support was provided by Ward, and his trusty pickup with trailer. When the onslaught began, it was a terrible sight. Rocks of all sizes were flying everywhere, large boulders were being dragged kicking and screaming from their foxholes, and roots were wrenched mercilessly from their underground layers. The Axis was putting up a good fight with their superior numbers and their entrenched positions, but you could see they were intimidated by the ORCC elite troops. It could have been the triples your observer tossed back at the Ottawa press club the evening before, but he could have sworn he actually saw a rock trying to dig itself a little further into the soil, to avoid the vicious assault. The melée went on for about three hours. When the smoke cleared, and the dust settled, there was a new runway where a wasteland existed before! Sure, there were injuries - more bandaided blisters than at the finish line at the Boston Marathon; more Icy-Hots on lower backs than Shaq pitches through in an entire season; more Tiger Balm on sore muscles than post game at the Superbowl. But in the end, it was all worth it, for what was created was a welcoming bosom for young seedlets yet to germinate, seeking new life and, like the magic bean stock, striving to reach the sky - a platform, where dreams of first flight, for airplanes not yet constructed, and young pilots not yet trained may soon take off - and on occasion, a cathedral where prayers for a safe landing may be answered! (unless you did something stupid) A robust "well done!" to the ORCC volunteers, from your humble roving correspondent! The first battle was won, but the war for Runway 27 continues - trees, brush and debris to be removed, seed to be sewn and watered, pilot stations to be repositioned... Your chronicler will be there for the grand opening (if he gets invited), so stay tuned! "Flyboy" Flaherty signing off for now! 9
10 Don't worry about it, I got it - The second most dangerous statement a woman can make. It means that a woman has asked a man several times to do something and is now doing it herself. (This will result in you asking at a later date, "What's wrong?" For the woman's response, see #3.) Hello Everyone, Note from the Editor Sorry this TopCap is so short, it has been a hectic month for me. I do need your input and pictures to help build it up. Time sure flies and before I realize it.it is time again for another publication. To help me enhance it, please feel free to send me links to interesting items, I can do the rest. I hope you have a wonderful Easter and get a chance to enjoy the fresh Spring air at the field. See you around, Ramona Bradbeer TopCap Editor rbradbeer@rogers.com Happy Easter! 10
11 On a more serious note.. Easter holiday is a celebration of the resurrection of Christ. Jesus Christ, The Son of God, bled and died for us in a sacrifice. Please take time to slow down, take a deep breath and listen The birds will sing their songs of praise as we begin to feel the warmth of the sun's rays. As we say "Goodbye" to the winter's gloom, the flowers and trees have already begun to bloom. All of life's beauty, The Lord created for us all to share. Spring breezes begin to flow, sending fragrances through the air. The winter's thawing will let the rivers, lakes, and streams rise and flow. The beauty of the Earth will make us all feel aglow! Let's be grateful for the LORD, let's rejoice and sing. If it wasn't for the Lord, we wouldn't have anything! From your web master; The ORCC is pleased to announce the arrival of a new service, we are now providing on our web site located at new web page for any Lost and/or Found items at the Drummond field. Any Lost or Found RC items such as tools, batteries, glasses, etc., will be listed on this webpage.
