1 LASSITER HIGH SCHOOL CHEERLEADER / MASCOT 2018/2019 TRYOUT PACKET CLINIC DATES: Monday, March 26th 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm LHS Gym Tuesday, March 27th 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm LHS Gym Wednesday, March 28 th 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm LHS Gym TRYOUT DATES: 9 th /10 th GRADE Thursday, March 29th 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm 11 th /12 th GRADE Thursday, March 29th 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm RESULTS WILL BE POSTED ONLINE FRIDAY, MARCH 30 th AFTER 4PM Clinic Attire: SHORTS T-SHIRTS (NO pockets, NO cheerleader logos, MUST be tucked in.) CHEERLEADING SHOES. DO NOT wear the following items to Clinic or Tryouts: jewelry, layered clothing, bicycle shorts, baggy shorts, or sweatshirts. Sports bras must be covered. HAIR MUST BE WORN UP, NAILS MUST BE TRIMMED and GUM CHEWING IS NOT ALLOWED. Tryout Attire: BLACK or DARK BLUE SHORTS PLAIN WHITE T-SHIRT CHEERLEADING SHOES HAIR MUST BE WORN UP and OFF THE SHOULDERS, NO JEWELRY, NO LONG or PAINTED NAILS and GUM CHEWING IS NOT ALLOWED. PAPERWORK INSTRUCTIONS: ALL required paperwork (including Physical) and forms are due the first day of clinic. Please sign and date all paperwork. Do not leave anything blank. NOTE: ALL 8 TH GRADERS AND THOSE NEW TO LASSITER CHEERLEADING MUST PRESENT A CURRENT PHYSICAL. **NEW: ANY CHEERLEADER WHO QUITS A SQUAD NOT DUE TO AN INJURY WILL BE REMOVED FROM ALL SQUADS AND WILL NO LONGER BE CONSIDERED A PART OF LASSITER CHEERLEADING AND INELIGIBLE TO TRYOUT THE NEXT YEAR. THIS INCLUDES MAKING A COMP TEAM AND QUITTING DURNG THE SEASON.
2 CLINIC AND TRYOUT EXPECTATIONS While not mandatory, it is highly encouraged to attend the tryout clinic The selection process will be a weeklong evaluation. Skills that will be evaluated include: Jumping ability Cheer Chant Dance Tumbling Stunting While the coaches are looking for candidates with a great deal of ability, we are also looking for candidates who have the potential to form a squad. In the event a candidate is injured at the time of tryouts, coaches' discretion will be used in considering him/her for selection as a cheerleader. State rules concerning school attendance will be followed. You must be at school four periods to participate in clinic or tryouts that day. This is applied to minimum day students also. Students assigned ISS (for all or part of the day) MAY NOT participate in clinic or tryouts that day. Students assigned OSS may not participate in clinic or tryouts until they return to class. Please note: A heavy emphasis will be placed on competition squad standing tumbling. Those selected for a competition squad are expected to maintain tumbling skills. Cheerleaders that can no longer tumble will be removed from the squad (except in the case of a documented injury). Athletes should be able to perform not only during tryouts, but also in practices and as a part of a routine. The cheerleading coaches will make the final decision for membership on a squad. Before participating in ANY evaluation activities, each student must be academically eligible and must have all necessary paperwork on file. LHS CHEERLEADER EXPECTATIONS: ATTEND ALL GAMES AND PRACTICES (see Discipline Policies) Maintain high academic standards Represent LHS and the LHS cheerleading program in a positive manner at all times Participate in all fundraisers-in regards to Ms. Odyssey-every cheerleader will need to find a participant or be a contestant in the pageant. Participate in banner painting the week before school begins ALL cheerleaders MUST participate in SPIRIT WEEKS Participate in pre-game preparations; i.e. locker and mailbox decorations, spirit banner, etc. Cheer at ALL playoff and tournament games REGARDLESS of Holidays Attend Spirit Camp: May 29 th -May 31st Attend MANDATORY Competition Camp: TBA
3 ATTEND and WORK Camp Lassiter; June 4-6 You will be assessed $100 fee if you do not attend. This is what we would have to pay someone to take your place. You must get prior approval if you cannot attend. Regardless of approval or non-approval a $100 fee will be assessed. You must cheer all required games and competitions in order to attend banquet. Please Note: You are responsible for reading all s, website etc. If you miss an event you may not use the excuse that you did not know about it. It will count as an unexcused absence. CHEERLEADING SQUADS: FRESHMAN Football/Basketball Squad: Freshman are eligible to cheer on this squad. They will cheer at Freshman football and Freshman/JV basketball games, tournaments, and post-season play*. They are also required to attend Varsity football games to sell programs. JUNIOR VARSITY (JV) Football/Basketball Squad: Sophomores are eligible to cheer on this squad. They will cheer all JV football and Varsity basketball games, tournaments, and post-season play*. JUNIOR VARSITY (JV) Competition Squad: Freshman, Sophomores, and Juniors are eligible to cheer on this squad. They will compete in four competitions in addition to cheering with their respective football squads. VARSITY Football/Basketball Squad: Juniors and Seniors are eligible to cheer on the Varsity Football/Basketball Squad. This squad will represent Lassiter by cheering all Varsity football and basketball games, tournaments, and postseason play*. Freshman and Sophomores who make the Varsity Competition squad will cheer with their grade level squads for FB. VARSITY Competition: All grades are eligible to cheer Varsity Competition only. This squad will compete during the entire competition season, Region and State**. If you choose to tryout for competition only, you cannot change your mind and be added to FB or BB VARSITY Competition Squad/Grade level FB: All grades are eligible to cheer on the Varsity Competition Squad. This squad will cheer all football games during the regular season and post-season* play. The Competition Squad will compete during the entire competition season, Region Competition, and State Competition**. Region and State are the weeks of Nov. 1 st and Nov. 10 th. Region and State competitions take place during the regular football cheering season. Competition practices and events take priority over sideline cheering. GHSA, not coaches, mandaet when these events occur. VARSITY BASKETBALL ONLY-Open to all 10 t h /12 th graders *This may include tournaments that are local during Thanksgiving Break and both Winter Breaks (Christmas/New Year & February). All-Star Cheerleading cannot be an excuse for missing a practice, game, competition, or Playoff game. The only Accepted excuses are a family emergency or illness (requires a doctor s note), or a mandatory Lassiter High School academic function- you must find a replacement for that game. You will not letter if you do not attend these events. All Competition cheerleaders are expected to be available to compete at every competition
4 Lassiter High School Cheerleading Discipline Policy 1 st offense: Warning 2 nd offense: Sit out portion of cheering event 3 rd offense: Sit out entire cheering event 4 th offense: Removed from cheering the rest of the season If removed from a football squad, a cheerleader may be allowed to return for basketball. If a competition cheerleader is removed from a football squad, they are ineligible to compete. 1. Late to Practice or a Game: Cheerleaders arriving to any cheer event after the time designated by their coach are subject to discipline procedures. ANYONE ARRIVING MORE THAN 10 MINUTES LATE WILL HAVE AN UNEXCUSED ABSENCE FOR PRACTICE AND WILL NOT CHEER THAT WEEKS GAME WHICH COUNTS AS AN UNEXCUSED ABSENCE FROM THE GAME. 2. Dress Code: Cheerleaders are expected to dress in appropriate practice clothes during practices. On designated school days and at all cheering events, cheerleaders should be dressed in full uniform, including ribbon and proper shoes and socks. Proper warm-ups must be worn to school. No jewelry, long nails, nail polish, gum, glitter, or excessive makeup (this includes bright lipstick) will be tolerated. Hair must be in a high ponytail unless deemed by the coach. Uniforms and shoes must be clean and free of holes. Cheerleaders may not participate until the dress code violation has been corrected. 3. Missing a practice or game without an excuse from the coach: The coach must receive prior notification if you are going to miss a practice or game. Excused absence is defined as illness with a doctor s note or a death in the family. A cheerleader that misses a practice or game without having prior approval of their coach will sit out a portion of the next cheering event. Cheerleaders missing 2 events or practices without having prior approval will be removed for the season. State rules concerning school attendance will be followed. Cheerleaders (including those on minimum day) must be at school four periods to participate in cheering events that day. Cheerleaders who knowingly participate in cheering events while in violation of these policies will face discipline procedures, including removal from the squad. 4. ISS/OSS: Cobb County and GHSA rules concerning ISS/OSS will be followed. Students in ISS (for all or part of the day) or OSS may NOT participate in cheering events that day. If ISS is assigned and served on Friday, students may NOT participate on Saturday or Sunday. Students with OSS may not participate in cheering events until they return to class. Cheerleaders that knowingly participating while in violation of these policies will face discipline procedures, including removal from the squad. 5. Grades: If a cheerleader receives two F s on the final report card, she is ineligible to cheer the next semester. 6. Sportsmanship/Conduct: Coaches will follow the Cobb County and Lassiter High School rules regarding sportsmanship and conduct. (Please note: Every cheerleader must fill out and sign the Cobb County and the Lassiter guidelines regarding sportsmanship and conduct). Cheerleaders exhibiting unsportsmanlike conduct, including disrespect to coaches or teammates, or behavior that reflects poorly on Lassiter or the LHS cheerleading program, may be removed from the squad at any time. 7. Participation: As a member of the Lassiter Cheer Program, cheerleaders are expected to participate in cheer camp, Camp Lassiter, pep rallies, banner painting, fundraising, charity events, publicity events, and school activities. Cheerleaders who fail to participate will be given banner and pole duty the entire season. While cheer camp is not mandatory, attendance is highly recommended. Cheerleaders that repeatedly miss activities (2 or more) will be dismissed from the squad. EXAMPLE: MISSING CHEER CAMP AND CAMP LASSITER. 8. Performance Expectations: All Cheerleaders are expected to perform to their highest ability. Talking, not cheering, eating, use of cell phones, and horseplay during cheering events will not be permitted. Note: Summer Workouts are M, W, and Thursdays and begin June 11 th from 8:30-9:45 at LHS-Attending at least 10 workouts is highly recommended. Competition practices are Tuesday s for JV Comp starting June 12th and Tues/Thurs for Varsity starting June 12th - 8:30-10:30am in small gym. Wednesday, August 1st - START DATE FOR MANDATORY PRACTICES - ALL SQUADS.
