2 Misty Copeland 1 In the coastal community of San Pedro, California, Misty and her family finally settled down to live after often packing up and moving from town to town. Although she loved swimming on the beach, had loving siblings, and a beautiful mother, things had also been difficult for her family. She was one of six children of mixed heritage. Despite reaching some stability, she and her five siblings were often mistreated by her new step-father. Even so, Misty Copeland found peace in school and the world of performance. She discovered a love for dance! What sets her apart? Misty was a firebird who used her love and gift of dance to blaze through cultural boundaries. Training and Early Career 2 Early on, Misty found inspiration from young girls like Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci, who also faced similar struggles, yet succeeded in becoming an Olympic gold medalist in the 1970s and 1980s. Copeland regularly danced to songs by music icon Mariah Cary and was eventually chosen to be the captain of her drill team at her middle school. It was her drill team teacher that suggested Misty take ballet classes at the Boys and Girls Club she attended. With this sound advice, Misty eventually came under the training of Cynthia Cindy Bradley, who realized that the young girl was a genius. Misty had a real gift;; she was able to see and perform choreographed movement immediately and dance en pointe after a very short period of ballet training. 3 While her dancing life was blossoming, Misty s home life was getting more and more difficult. Her family eventually lost their home and began to live in a motel. These difficulties encouraged her mother to allow the now 13-year-old dancer to move in with her teacher s family. This decision allowed Misty to continue her training, while also entering the public spotlight as a promising performer. It was at a charity event with the famous actress Angela Bassett, that Misty first gathered attention. She won the lead role in the production of The Chocolate Nutcracker, a ballet production that received recognition in the Los Angeles Times Magazine. This attention brought wonderful success, but also brought more family troubles. 2
3 4 After attending a summer intensive program on a scholarship at the San Francisco Ballet, Misty s mother battled with Cindy Bradley. She wanted her daughter to live with her again. Due to her now famous performances, Misty also faced the media coverage of this unrest, which made her situation more problematic. Eventually, Misty went back to live with her mother and siblings. Her heart hurt, but once again her dancing helped. 5 She continued to take classes in places like the Lauridsen Ballet Centre and another summer intensive program at the renowned American Ballet Theatre. The American Ballet Theatre, also known as ABT, is a world class ballet organization committed to the best dance and movement. American Ballet Theatre is typically considered the best company for classical ballet in the nation. Those involved with ABT work to uphold the art of ballet and make it available to all who seek it out. It is a historic and leading cultural institution. At the beginning of her ABT career, she faced a spinal fracture that required time off dance and wearing a brace for almost an entire year! A few years later, she had to temporarily stop dancing to heal from stress fractures to her left shin. Despite these obstacles, Misty never abandoned her dreams, and continued to work hard to improve her art form. 3
