Needless to say, your children have already achieved and experienced such a lot of exciting things. I have had the delight of showing off our wonderful school to a significant number of visitors since term began. Some have been potentially new families keen to visit in advance of our up and coming Open Morning, but many have been interested candidates for the position of Deputy Head Teacher who could take over from Mrs Higginson at the end of the academic year. I am delighted to share the pride I have had in introducing your children to them; watching them at work in a range of subjects; and delighting in how eloquently (note the use of the last word of the week ) they were able to describe their learning. I was in fact so impressed by the piece of performance poetry observed in 5P that I assumed it had been written by a published author of whom I was unaware. Not so in fact the children were both performers and authors. I have asked that it be included in this week s Sagitta so do read and enjoy if you are lucky enough to be a family member to someone in 5P, I m positive they would love to read it aloud to you. Thomas Merton Dear Children, Well done to all of you who remembered to bring in a sentence with the word of the week from before the Christmas break. This is a little reminder about our new challenge for those who have maybe forgotten! Each week in Sagitta there will be a word that I would like you to be able to use properly. On Monday mornings, if you can give your form teacher a sentence (orally or written) with the word appropriately used to show you understand its meaning, they will reward you with a house point! (House points will only be given if you offer your sentence on Mondays no rewards for a missed deadline!) Many words will be purposely tricky so you may ask friends and family for help if you need it! Our new word of the week is ambiguous Word class: adjective Definition: open to more than one interpretation; not having one obvious meaning; not clear or decided

2 EARLY YEARS NEWS NURSERY LETTER OF THE WEEK Next week our special letter sound will be 'h' for hedgehog. If you have anything at home beginning with 'h' that you'd like to share with us, please send it in on Monday. Please remember we also love to hear the children's 'news' so, if you have had an exciting outing or event over the weekend, please let us know and we shall encourage the children to share their news here in Nursery. NURSERY TOPIC We began our topic 'All Creatures Great and Small' with a wonderful week of bears! The home corner had three of its own, together with porridge bowls, chairs and beds, leading to some fantastic role play and early writing opportunities. The children also made their own porridge in the Early Years kitchen, created outdoor 'caves', and painted teddy pictures and bear masks in the Art Area. Next week our topic focus will be 'Percy the Park Keeper' and we shall be looking at British wildlife, including squirrels, rabbits and hedgehogs. YEAR 4 INDIAN DANCE WORKSHOP This week started with energy and joy as Year 4 were thrown into a Bhangra Dance workshop with Sohan from Aashyiana Dance. It began with the children finding the beat, dancing, moving and clapping with a Dhol drum. Gradually as the morning progressed the children worked with traditional music and learnt a range of moves and repeated actions. They explored some impressive routines with jumps, tricky steps and lots of descriptive arm movements. The children finished off with a touch of Bollywood, where they felt the different upbeat rhythm and tried out some more modern moves. It was a wonderfully fun session, but hugely important for the Year 4 children as they begin rehearsals this week for the Year 4 Play, "Sensory Journey through India." RECEPTION TOPIC & LENT PLAY Reception are busy preparing for their play 'The Lonely Dragon' which will take place on the 10th and 11th of February. Parts have now been allocated and the children are very excited. Letters will be sent out nearer the time so that you may request tickets. RECEPTION TOPIC Our new topic, 'Dragons and Pets', has begun with some lovely artwork and Literacy activities. There have also been exciting 'goings-on' in the Outdoor Areas and Hornbeam Room with children making treasure for the dragon, creating treasure maps and painting gigantic dragons for wall displays!

3 ORIENTEERING CLUB HALES Orienteering club will start on 10th February 2016, from when it will run every week till the end of Lent term. Children may be dropped off in The Crescent but cars should not come over the zebra crossing. Please be aware that although parents may come into the parking area at Hales to collect children at 5.00 pm there is very limited parking space. We should like to remind parents they should not be parking on the yellow lines these are there to ensure clear passage for cars leaving school and to ensure the safety of the children. It is particularly important in the dark evenings that cars are not trying to manoeuvre in limited spaces with children walking around them. A bank representative will collect envelopes during morning registration. YEAR 5 MONSTER POEMS This week Year 5 have been learning about poetry. Each class wrote their own poem based on 'The Wendigo'. We decided on a picture and a name before writing the poem. We recited our poems to other classes and listened to theirs. They were great fun to compose, recite and hear. We found the rhythm of the poem by clapping and thought carefully about the amount of syllables each word had so we could fit it into the poem. Also, we brainstormed lots of adjectives for our monster. Please take a moment to read our poems on the next page. Despite the freezing weather conditions we started the game in high spirits and both teams were quick to score their first goal. The girls worked together as a team to pass and move the ball around the court to give our shooters as many opportunities as possible to score more goals but it was not to be. The final score was 1 6 to Solihull School. Well done to all the girls who played and thank you to the parents who braved the cold. Hopefully it will be slightly warmer next time Year 3 have matches! While you are scoffing candywise, It thinks about you gizzardwise. He knocks... You celebrate. It tricks. His treat is just malicious licks! (5A) Its mouth is shaped like raw pork chops. Its tentacles are succulent. Its claws are scuttaling and bent. Its sticky skin is lumpy. And scaly, slimy, bumpy. Its spying eye is bloodshot Bulging like an exploding dot. It always kills and never stops. Last night a scream was heard in Spain. Tonight my Gran was found in pain. As you are chomping fish and chips It contemplates your juicy bits. You chomp It munches The rest is merely burps and crunches. (5H) Its eyes ablaze as if on fire. Its many spikes are purple-ish It swims around quite hurtle-ish It likes to make small children cry In fear And terror As they die! Its fangs are sharp and snare-ish Its meals are mostly square-ish. Its thoughts are mean and devilish Cunning Vile and evilish. It lurks around with deep desire. Last night it dined at Burger King Tonight upon your next of kin! If you are sleeping heavily You will be cursed eternally Till not a trace of you remains And you are never seen again! The Eyersnog (5M) Its lips are slimy like a frog. Its staring eye will hypnotise, Its poison breath will vaporize. Its tentacles reach to the sky, Way up high. Sadly, Where birds fly. His rainbow skin will surprise you. He is sly, Quite shy, Then you die! Will eat its prey like a Wild Hog. Then creeps out, this terrible beast, Chasing you for his midnight feast. Circling you like a hungry bear, You know this will end in despair. Lunging. Run he s right there! Crunch, crunch, gulp... Inside his tum eaten to a pulp.

5 OPEN MORNING 23rd January 2016 In two weeks time our second Open Morning will take place. On Saturday, both sites will be open from Parking will be available at the Senior School, in the Hales Car Park, the Firs or the Memorial Car Park. As ever, we are looking for children to act as Guides. Children from Year 2 to Year 6 may volunteer to act as guides and we expect all our prefects to offer this service, if they are not participating in a match or squad training. Our pupils are always excellent guides and gain a great deal of confidence from the experience. They are also given something to eat and drink and all seem to enjoy the experience. If your son or daughter is willing and able to act as a guide, please complete the form attached to this newsletter. Children in Years 2 and 3 will guide at Swallows and those in Years 5 and 6 should be taken to Hales. Year 4 may choose which site they would like to guide at. Guides should wear school uniform. Swallows site is our main point of entry so it is always busy on Open Mornings. The number of guides required at Hales is always difficult to predict, but we do always need guides please. We shall ensure that those who came along in the Michaelmas Term but did not guide will be the first pupils to guide this term.
