Grade 7 Fiction Passage for Selected and Constructed Response Questions The Other Side By Georganne L. Farrell Carlos hurried toward the square. In the plaza, in front of the Alamo, a movie company was setting up its cameras. They re almost ready to shoot the picture, Carlos said aloud. He was worried. Maybe he wouldn t get there in time. Maybe they d already hired enough extras. Maybe he was too short to be in the movies. Maybe. Maybe. I ve got to get the job, he thought to himself. Nine-thirty, the sign had said. Nine-thirty in Alamo Plaza. It was now nine thirty-five. Carlos rushed so quickly through the streets that he hardly noticed anything. People passed by puffing cigars or looking at the morning paper. Carlos kept bumping into them. Excuse me, please, I m in a hurry, he said, his dark eyes glistening and his smile bright. So most of the people smiled back and kept walking. When Carlos finally reached the Plaza, he could see cameramen, actors and lots of other people standing around. Most of these other people carried small cameras. Tourists, Carlos muttered under his breath. Every day, they came to see the Alamo. Today there getting an extra treat with the movie about to be shot. Carlos had grown up in and around San Antonio. He d seen the Alamo all his life. In school, he d listened to the stories of the tough little group of Texans who had fought the 5,000-man Mexican army right on this spot in And he was proud to be a Texan. Carlos liked the Alamo stories. And he didn t mind school. But today he was cutting all his classes. If I could only get a job for one day, he had told his older brother Felipe, I could make twenty dollars. What ll Mama say if she finds out you cut classes? Felipe asked.

She won t find out if you don t tell her. Me tell her? Felipe said, surprised. Maybe I ll even go down to the Plaza myself. Think I could be in the movies? Sure, Carlos said. They re hiring over three hundred people for the battle scene. You know, where General Santa Anna attacks the Alamo. What! Felipe exclaimed. You re not gonna be in Santa Anna s army, are you? Carlos frowned. What do you mean? I m a Texan and I ll fight with the Texans. I m not fighting with any Mexican army! He repeated that to himself at the Plaza. Across the way, a curly-headed man in dark glasses kept shouting at a group of people who looked confused. Carlos walked up to the man. You still hiring extra Texans, Mister? The man pushed his glasses down on his nose. You want a job? Carlos nodded back. The man looked him over, then asked briskly, Name? Rivera. Carlos Juan Rivera. O.K., the man said, writing the name on a small card. Here. Take this, fill it out and report to the wardrobe over there. Carlos followed the direction of the man s nod across the Plaza. A long van stood there, open on the sides. Crowds of people milled around it. As he stepped toward the van, an official stopped him. You one of the extras? Let me see that card. O.K., just stand in line down there. They ll give you a uniform. Put it on and be standing by. Cameras roll at For a moment Carlos stood there, dazed. A uniform? he said, in disbelief. You re one of General Santa Anna s men, the man replied. But I m a Mexican-American a Texan! sputtered Carlos. I don t want to fight on the other side!

It s just a movie, kid, the man said, laughing. And that s the job. Take it or leave it! Carlos was frantic. Twenty dollars. That money would really help the family. His mother wouldn t be angry about his cutting school, once she found out he d worked and earned twenty dollars. Well? the man asked. To cut school for nothing. That s what it would be if he didn t take the job. But twenty dollars Slowly, Carlos nodded to the man and walked toward the far end of the van. In the crowd he saw Felipe, already dressed in a stiff, gold-buttoned uniform with a high hat. Hello, amigo, Felipe called as he saw Carlos. So you re in the Mexican army now. He laughed at his own joke. Carlos didn t think it was funny. What would the guys at school say when they found out he d been on the other side? He frowned at Felipe, who just grinned. After what seemed like hours of standing in line, Carlos finally got his uniform. Looking at it made him cringe. Wearing it was even worse. Hey, amigo, where are you in there? Felipe laughed. The coat of Carlos s uniform was too big and his pants bagged. The rim of his tall hat rested almost on his nose, making him trip over his musket. Oh, go away, Carlos cried angrily. He pushed his helmet up. Then he looked toward the Alamo at the fake front that had been put up to protect the real front. Above rose a row of Texans. The camera began to roll. Two scenes were shot in which Colonel Bill Travis and his men defied Santa Anna s messengers, who had asked the Texans to surrender. The Texans stood atop the Alamo and fired a cannon shot into the midst of the messengers. Take that for your answer, Carlos muttered as the smoke cleared. His heart beat faster. He was proud of the Texans. It was as if he was there with them, fighting the battle for real. In the afternoon the filming moved to a field outside San Antonio s city limits. It was time for the Mexican army to storm the walls of a second Alamo, which the movie people had built so

the real Alamo would not be damaged. Before the action, a man stood up front and shouted directions over a loudspeaker. His voice boomed across the dusty field. Carlos tried to listen. Sometimes he heard bits of Spanish, sometimes English. Above him the sun was blazing. His uniform was hot. His musket was heavy. Then the director stopped talking. The crowd of extras fell silent. Carlos waited and scratched his neck, which was being rubbed red by the collar of his overcoat. He wondered how Santa Anna s army ever stood their uniforms. Take one! A shout started the cameras rolling again. Carlos lifted his musket. Along with the men beside him, he began to run forward. He tripped, got up, and tripped again. The sweat ran down his back. In seconds, he came to a small rise in the field. He was supposed to fall behind it and fire his musket. Several feet away, another extra was to set off a cannon. Nothing would come out of the cannon except smoke. The Alamo walls ahead would be blown open from within. Carlos threw himself on the rise and aimed his musket. As he was about to squeeze the trigger, the cannon boomed. A cloud of smoke and dust flew into the air. Carlos glanced toward the man who set the cannon off. The man lay on the ground, not moving. Coughing from the dust, Carlos inched his way over. The battle raged around him. Smoke and dust clogged his throat. On either side he could hear man shouting in Spanish. He reached the man, dropped his musket and began to pull the limp body off to the side. Carlos didn t know where he was going. He bumped into soldiers charging the Alamo. They tripped, stumbled, and went on yelling. The roar was tremendous. Carlos wondered idly when it would all stop. Suddenly, it did. For a moment, there was silence. Then someone ran toward him shouting, Hey, what happened back there? Back at the first aid station, Carlos told what he knew. One of the prop men said that the recoil of the cannon must have knocked the man flat. Then his head had hit a rock, knocking him out. Just left to lie there, he might have been trampled by the onrushing lines of extras. But now he d be find in an hour or so. Carlos visited the man. Muchas grazias, amigo, the man said. Tears rose to his eyes as he shook Carlos s hand. I think maybe you saved my life!

You did a terrific piece of acting out there, the director told Carlos afterward. Want to come back tomorrow? It was a great take. Maybe we can shoot some more like it. Dragging your wounded comrade to safety was the perfect touch. How about Saturday? Carlos replied. No school then. Great, the director said. And you don t mind being on the other side? He laughed. Carlos smiled, too. The other side that s just what he had called it himself. No, he didn t mind. After the man had thanked him and shaken his hand, he knew it was the same side either way.
