7 DESCRIPTION OF A PLACE AS A LEAD Nine red leather chairs rest behind the mahogany table in the properly paneled and softly carpeted auditorium in the central administrative building on West Cabell Street. All of the chairs are equal but one is more equal than the others. It is the fifth chair, the one in the middle of the table. The back of the chair is slightly taller than the rest. This one is reserved for Dr. Marvin Layne, who for the past 11 years has served as school board president. From this post, Dr. Layne has guided the district through several its most turbulent years. The teenager is suffering a heart attack from a drug overdose. With sirens blaring and emergency lights flashing, the ambulance races along R.L. How far, Ben? paramedic Harky shouts through a small window to his partner, driver Ben Bryan, who is working hard just to keep the shaking ambulance in one lane. Twelve minutes. We can still make the cut over to Parkland, the driver yells above the din. Do it, Harky shouts to his partner who revises the ambulance s destination. This is a typical run on box 703, Dallas busiest ambulance and the 11 th busiest in the country, according to a national survey.

9 DESCRIPTION OF A PERSON AS A LEAD Walking into a small coffee and pizza shop, South grad Lisa Spindler cannot help but steal the attention of those inside. One by one, everyone in the room takes quick glance at the woman who searches for a vacant table. Dressed in a long trench coat, overlaying a white shirt, with a peach sweater wrapped around her dark jeans and a black hat that surrounds her porcelain-like face untouched by make-up, Spindler could be one of the models who have helped create her growing fame. Spindler, who graduated from South 14 years ago, has made a career out of her love of photography that began in high school. Her career began primarily with fashion photography, but her current project tells the story of a homeless man through photographs. When I was younger, I used to look at many magazines, especially European publications, she said. I always wanted to be a photographer after looking at these very powerful images.
