Center Board Expands Programs BY PAULA GOODIN Featarr EdlUr Complants are no longer heard on campus about the lack of entertanment brought to Eastern. Due to the work of the Unversty Center Board, four bg-name concerts have already been held ths year-smokey Robnson and the Mracles, Doc Severnson, the Carpenters, and Chcago-wth four more planned for the sprng, not to menton Alvn Toffler, Bond and Madam Butterfly n the lecture and fne arts area. "The whole purpose of the Center Board s to expand the socal, cultural and recreatonal programs of the Unversty," sad Hayward M. Daugherty, drector of student actvtes and organzatons, who s also n charge of pop concerts for the Board. He added that the Center Board has four man functons:, l) to develop polces for operaton of the Board; 3) to prepare and supervse the Board's budget; 3) to create a commttee to work on entertanment; and 4) to act on proposals presented to the Board. Have Large Voce Students have a large voce n proposals of entertaners. Surveys (one s planned ths month) are taken to provde a sample of groups students are nterested n. The Board attempts to brng n entertaners students want f lt s fnancally possble. The Center Board operates on a budget of $20,000 whch s provded by the $3.00 fee pad by each student at regstraton. 60 per cent of the budget s allotted to the. pop concerts; the remander goes for the lectures and fne arts seres whch are always free to students. "We do not look on the Center Board as money-makng," sad Daugherty. He sad that the supportng part of the Center Board s the pop concerts whch they attempt to make as nexpensve as possble for the student. The average group for pop concerts costs between $10,000 and $15,000. The Colseum provdes 7,200 seats, but only 7,000 tckets are prnted-5,000 student tckets and 2,000 general admsson tckets. Daagherty Cttes Income Daugherty llustrated the amount of money made by the Board by the example of a $15000 concert. If the concert s a sell-out, the net ncome would be about $ ,000 student tckets at $2.00 each yelds $10,000; 2,000 general admsson tckets at $4-00 each yelds $8,000 makng a total of $18,000. After the $15,000 for the performers, expenses such as advertsng, lghtng and sound, tcket prntng and wages. to workers cost around $1500 leavng an average of $1500 for the Board. But sell-outs are unlkely "The Carpenters s the frst concert we ever sold out," sad Daugherty. "If we hsve a $15,000 concert and brng n $12,000, t's stll a success. Fnancally we haven't had a concert f we're able to replace the money," n the operatng budget provded by student fees. Rght now the Center Board s only an nterm Board made up of 16 members who are dvded nto three commttees: pop concerts, fne arts, and lectures. The students on the Board are Guv Hatfeld. COX SUM Wrter Due to the recent death of U.S. Representatve John Watts, Democrat-Ncholasvlle, a specal electon wll be held ths Saturday to fll hs vacant seat. Four canddates met the November 24 deadlne to fle for offce; three from Lexngton, and the fourth from Frankfort The specal electon s only for the year remanng n Watt's two year term. The wnner ths Saturday wll have to run agan n May f he hopes to retan hs seat n the House of Representatves. The four canddates are: Wllam P. Curln, Democrat; Dr. W.S. Krogdahl, Amercan Party; Lt. Col. Raymond Nutter, Republcan; and Edgar Wallace, an Independent. Curln, the Democratc In Brock Audtorum canddate, s a 37 year old attorney and state representatve from Frankfort. He feds ths electon s "pretty much of an dentty campagn." Curln says, "Let's face t, there are probably 400,000 people n the 6th dstrct who have never heard of Bll Curln." In 1972, when the Kentucky General Assembly reapportons the state's seven congressonal dstrcts, Curln wants to be sure the 6th dstrct remans a "Central Kentucky, blue grass, tobacco dstrct." Dr. Krogdahl, 52, the Amercan Party canddate, consders hmself a consttutonal conservatve. A Unversty of Kentucky astronomy professor on leave to run hs campagn, Dr. Krogdahl dstrusts the "mass meda." Dr. Krogdahl opposes many poltcans' vews of the war. If Amercan forces are wthdrawn, he sad recently, "We're smply gong to have to fght or surrender at a later tme. The tme to fght s when you can. wn. We could wn now." Lt. Col. Nutter, the Republcan canddate, s a 41 year-old career Army offcer. He calls Ncholasvlle and Lexngton home, but has spent very lttle tme n the dstrct for the past 18 years. Col. Nutter clams ths has no bearng on the electon, snce he has always voted by absentee ballot, and has kept nformed n dstrct problems over the years. Snce 1968, Col. Nutter has been a congressonal representatve for the secretary of the Army. "The most mportant asset gong for me s my experence n Congress." says Nutter. Martn BY ROBERT BABBAGE. 3R News Edtor The year-old struggle between Eastern Presdent Robert R. Martn and Student Assocaton Presdent Charles I. Kelhoffer reached the hgh pont ths past month wth ther relatonshp serously straned. In the most recent development, Dr. Martn has made use of specal power granted by the Board of Regents to control Kelhoffer's management of the Student Assocaton offce, whle Kelhoffer has threatened legsl acton aganst the Unversty contendng volaton of hs cvl lbertes. The problem over the Student Assocaton offce began earler n the fall when Kelhoffer, attemptng to strengthen student communcatons, volunteered the offce door as a bulletn board, snce none exsts on the Student Unon Buldng's second floor where the offce s located. Dr. Martn Vsts Offce On a vst to the SUB Dr. Martn stopped n the offce and asked Kelhoffer to remove the sgns, sayng they were "napproprate." Dr. Martn called the sgns "propaganda," and when questoned by Kelhoffer, he sad the presence of the sgns "makes ths (offce) look lke a place where hppes would hang out." Kelhoffer refused to remove the sgns. On the evenng of Nov. 18 Dr. Martn was n the SUB. and removed the sgns hmself. Kelhoffer then placed a new. sgn on the door the followng day demandng that no sgns be removed n the future. Last week Dr. Martn warned Kelhoffer that hs actons bordered on "nsubordnaton," and that no further sgns were to be put on the door. The orgnal sgns were called "movement posters" by Kelhoffer. They related to Campus Crusade for Chrst, voter regstraton, Eastern's Black Student Unon, ant-strp mnng, the campus move schedule, and a natonal student government conference. Objects To Plaque Accordng to Kelhoffer, none could be descrbed as obscene. Kelhoffer sad that Dr. Martn objected to the plaque on the door whch read "Student Assocaton" -whch was placed on the door several years before Kelhoffer came to Eastern n the fad of Dr. Martn sad, "I told Chuck to take the sgns off. He ddn't do t, so I took them off. Doors wll not be made nto bulletn boards." In a few weeks the offce wll be moved to the Powell Buldng where there s ample bulletn board space, he noted. "Chuck has totally destroyed any effectveness he had," Dr. Martn contnued. "I don't really know what he's tryng to accomplsh." Kelhoffer Comments Kelhoffer sad, "Dr. Martn ddn't have the courage or the decency to put the materals that students put on the door, n my offce after he took them off - -he destroyed them. "Persons have asked me why I have taken ssue wth somethng that on face value may not appear mportant. We're tryng to wn rghts we've never had here before, and we've get to wn these basc rghts frst." Student rghts at Eastern, accordng to Kelhoffer, "are so prmtve that we don't even have the bascs such as freedom of expresson of whch I have been deprved." A new ssue of conflct arose last week when the Student Assocaton's full-tme secretary, Kathy Marcket < tred to pck up Kelhoffer's latest newsletter to the student body n the duplcatng center. Mss Marckett reported that after seeng the 7000 copes of the newsletter n boxes at the center, she was told that duplcatng could no longer prnt the sngle sheet newsletter. Mstake Oa Newsletter. Kelhoffer nvestgated the stuaton and learned from the duplcatng center that they had "gotten n a lot of trouble" for prntng Kelhoffer's frst three newsletters. Dr. Martn called the matter "purely and smply a mstake," sayng, "I had nothng to do wth t and know nothng about t. Duplcatng took t upon themselves to hold t up. They weren't told to do that at all." At press tme, Kelhoffer had submtted another newsletter to duplcatng. Its status s unknown, and there s no word on the 7000 orgnal copes of the fourth edton. The rft between Dr. Martn and Kelhoffer began one year ago when Kelhoffer establshed hmself as the student senate's leadng legslator n terms of measures passed. Kelhoffer does not deny that the basc tone of the majorty of hs proposals was lberal, and at tmes n drect opposton to admnstraton vewpont. One-Man Electon In Aprl when" t became apparent that Kelhoffer was the only regstered canddate for student presdent, and would thus be the wnner of the electon, Dr. Martn expressed hope for a wrte-n campagn aganst Kelhoffer. At one pont ju» pror to tne sprng student electon, Dr. Martn expressed hs reservatons about allowng Kelhoffer to attend the sprng meetng of the Board of Regents. Burgers, Hot Dogs, Cokes * Boycott Puts Bg Busness On Det Look out, Establshment. There's a new boycott on the way whch promses to be the most effectve one to date. Workng out of Darby, Pennsylvana, no doubt a vertable radcal hotbed, a group whch calls tself The Commttee For Peace By Pece has devsed an nfallble scheme to wreck the economy of the food and clothng ndustry. A newsletter publshed by the group sad the boycott "wll be prmarly drected aganst food concerns supported by the 14 to 30 age group, e.g. Gno's, McDonald's, etc." "Hopefully t wll extend nto the clothng ndustry to nclude a boycott of blue jeans, sandals, the entre gamut of wearng apparel that the "Establshment" manufacturers assocate wth ths age group." "In drectng a boycott aganst these concerns, we feel that a major upset of Resdents Burnt Up ther economy would be the expected and desrable result. Furthermore, these concerns support the mltaryndustral complex; ther grevances would be more vald than ours..." (whatever that means.) Upon readng the letter the frst three tmes, the general consensus was that t was (1) a joke; (2) legtmate but absurd; and (3) not worth our tme. Actually, t was (4) all of the above, but snce the Commttee went to so much trouble... In defense of the Establshment, though, surely Ronald McDonald sn't over thrty. And what self-respectng radcal could tote a protest placard wthout hs blue jeans and sandals? A snper wth long har wearng a dark grey busness sut perches hgh atop the Unversty Inn, hs sghts set on Burgermatc's front door, placdly pckng off hgh school kds who only wanted a hamburger and french fres. Imagne the outcome of such a boycott. Here's Joe Hppe stagng a stn n the Admnstraton buldng n hs double-knt slacks and forty-dollar wng-tps, orderng hs rght-hand man out for a tossed salad. "Rght-hand" quckly scans the boycott lst and fnds t s OK for Joe to consume tossed salad. Upon returnng, he fnds Joe polshng off a sandwch whch, looks < suspcously lke a Bg Mac. Joe s mmedately removed from hs poston as nterm unversty presdent. ~. The Commttee lsts hamburgers, hot Over Heatng Problems Eastern's Housng Offce owes us an explanaton, f not an apology. A pre-thanksgvng drectve ssued by Housng nstructed all students lvng n dorms to leave ther room heaters on "low." The effect of such acton turned out to be dspleasng, or more accurately, dsasterous. Upon returnng Sunday, many students objected to fndng ther rooms hot as ovens. It wasn't too good on pctures, typewrters, stereos, album covers, albums, or on books that were left n rooms over the short break. Warped records and damaged machnery of sorts, along wth baked books and papers, and telephones too hot to touch, ddn't exactly make for a pleasant surprse for us when we got back. In at least two dorms, the heaters that weren't turned on by the students before leavng were placed on "hgh" by Unversty offcals. How (n) consderate. There appears to be no reason for ths lttle admnstraton rule-what could be the logcal explanaton behnd t? It's a sad state of affars and ronc extremes, when one week the heat's not workng adequately, and the next week t's been fxed and we're forced to use t n over-abundant proportons. We're knd of burnt up about the whole matter. dogs, soft drnks, potato chps, pretzels, french fres, and wne as food tems that are taboo. The letter also outlned the Commttee's plans for the clothng boycott: "All throughout the month of Aprl the begnnng of the boycott aganst the clothng manufacturers wll be gong on. Just tell everyone to stock up on the necesstes, e.g. jeans, boots, and jerseys before then. It mght be approprate to boycott sandals altogether. After all, we can all survve n sneakers bare feet for the warm season anyway." Looks lke the only hope left for the Establshment s a long, cold, hungry summer, when a hamburger would sure warm up those purple toes. Book Revew Radcal Lawyers Present Vews On Court Systems "Radcal lawyer" s very nearly a contradcton n terms. By tranng and temperament, lawyers are nclned to work wthn the system ;'but many of the lawyers represented n ths book want a radcally dfferent system. How should a socally commtted lawyer behave n court? Whom should le defend? The lawyers n ths book represent many, many more n Amerca who are con- frontng the contradctons n beng a radcal and beng a lawyer on the front lnes of movement poltcs and n the courts. \ 1 ' - - Essays, testmony, and arguments by Wllam Kunstler, Florynce Kennedy, Gerald Lefcourt, Brenda Fasteau, Charles Garry, Henry dsuvero, Mchael Tgar, Howard Moore, and many others examne racsm, sexsm, the predcament of the G. Jonathan Black, hmself a lawyer as well as a journalst, descrbes some of the dlemmas faced by the radcal lawyers n hs long and thoughtful ntroducton. "Among radcals and revolutonares there s mountng contempt for the courts and the legal system. The courts, they say, are the courts of the captalst system. They uphold the law-wrtten and unwrtten -of that system. It s futle to hope that a racst socety wll produce non-racst courts. It s a wshful fantasy to beleve that a socety that daly, and qute methodcally, vctmzes ts poor wll treat them chartably, let alone justly, n ts courts...the radcal lawyer can come to beleve that he s not worth hs revolutonary salt unless he s defendng Huey P. 4 Curts Tarr Wrtes Selectve Servce Undergoes Many Sgnfcant Changes' The agent for progress and mprovement s partcpaton.' The Selectve Servce System has undergone many sgnfcant changes n the past two years. Many of the changes are drectly attrbutable to the young men and women who partcpated responsbly durng ths dffcult perod of change. Our chef mechansm for ths youth nvolvement has been the Selectve Servce Youth Advsory Commttees. Establshed n every state across the country, the groups have dscussed the deas, suggestons and crtcsms of youth on a wde varety of draft topcs. The new draft law and regulatons reflect nearly two dozen sgnfcant changes n the system. Of the thrty-sx suggeston)} put forward by over 600 youth advsers, eghteen have been mplemented by law or regulaton. Sx are beng/studed further for possble future mplementaton. Ten were beyond the jursdctonal control of the Selectve Servce System and were referred to the Executve Branch or Congress for consderaton. Only two were dsapproved. One of toe more mportant changes brought about concerned the age of local draft board members. The youth commttees suggested lower ages and a curtalment of the length of servce on local boards. Regulatons prevously stated that ctzens could not be apponted to local boards unless they were at least 30 years old. They could not serve beyond ther 75th brthday or for more than 25 years. The new regulatons and law lmt servce on local draft boards to 20 years and set a mmmum age of 65 years. A mnmum age of 18 has been set for appontment to local boards. In accord wth out youth advsers' recommendatons, the new law abolshed student deferments for all college students who were not enrolled durng the academc year. In other words, from now on, no more college deferments wll be granted. But the law also provdes that both undergraduate and graduate students who receve nducton orders wll have ther nductons postponed untl the end of ther current academc term, quarter, semester. A student n hs last academc year can have hs nducton postponed untl the end of the school year, allowng hm to graduate. The advsers were concerned that draft calls vared from communty to communty, and they sought a more unform approach to selectng men for servce. In the past a system based upon total regstraton was used to apporton the natonal draft call to the state headquarters, who n turn apportoned the call to ndvdual local draft boards. The new regulatons removed the requrement to use ths system and nstead establshed a unform natonal call. Now all young men n the naton wth the same lottery numbers who are avalable wll receve nducton notces at nearly the same tme. It was recommended that young men be afforded a judcal revew of appeals 'to local and state boards n classfcaton matters. The new law provdes a realstc move n ths drecton, permttng a young man appealng hs classfcaton to brng wtnesses and present hs appeal to a quotum of the board. The young man s allowed now to make a personal appearance, before the Senate and PresMenfal appeal boards. Further, a regstrant can requre a board to gve hm a wrtten explanaton of ts denal of bs clam. Among our advsers were conscentous objectors who beleved that they should be provded an opportunty to work n jobs that better serve the natonal health, nterest and welfare. Under the old law conscentous objectors performng alternate cvlan servce were under the control of local draft boards. Under the new law the Natonal Drector of Selectve Servce has the responsblty for admnsterng the conscentous objector work program. The gudelnes have been broadened for acceptable work and state drectors have been delegated the responsblty of assgnng and revewng work assgnments for these men. Our nvolvement wth youth s a contnung actvty. An nformal survey, for example, shows that we wll need to replace approxmately one quarter of our local board membershp because of the new maxmum age requrements of the law. Whle the draft system wll suffer from the loss of these dedcated men and women, we are eager to take advantage of ths opportunty to replace them wth young men and women reflectng the ethnc, educatonal and socal backgrounds of regstrants across the naton. Apponted by the Presdent upon the recommendaton of the state governor, the local board member holds, perhaps, the most mportant poston n the Selectve Servce System. A young man or woman who mght be nterested n servng on a local board or n assumng other volunteer postons n the Selectve Servce System should contact the offce of hs or her governor. "Amahl" Vsts Brock Wednesday "Amahl and the Nght Vstors", the beautful Chrstmas opera by Menott, wll be performed next Wednesday nght at 8:00 n Brock Audtorum. The opera wll be under the drecton of Mr. Davd Aken, of Indana Unversty. In the lead role of Amahl wll be Sam Coleman, also of Bloomngton. The remander of the case whch s comprsed of Eastern students nclude: Mother, Salle Odum; Kng Kaspar, Barry McCauley; Kng Melchor, Bll Owens; Kng Balthazar, Tom Reblas; The Page, Davd Stock. The story of "Amahl and the Nght Vstors" centers around a young shepherd boy who s crppled. He and hs mother are very poor, and they are called upon to provde a restng place for the three kngs as they are n search of the brthplace of "the Chld." Before the evenng s over, Amahl and hs mother experence many wondorous thngs that before they had only dreamed of. Orchestraton s provded by the EKU Symphony, conducted by Roland Vamos. Bruce Hoagland conducts the Chorus (EKU Chamber Chor), and Jacke Morrs s the Choreographer. Joan-Lor na Bonnemann, a member of the EKU musc faculty, s coordnator for the performance. John Chappell relate* an anecdote n "Mark Twan Tonght!" whch appeared at Eastern Tuesday (Nov. 23). The theatrcal performance s the same that won for Hal Holbrook, ts orgnator, the Tonv Award, the Drama Crtcs' Crcle Award, and an Emmy Nomnaton. The show marked Presdent Martn's 11th annversary at EKU. THE EASTERN PROGRESS-Thuraday, December t, 1971-Page I 'Mark Twan Tonght* Recaptures A Legend John Chappell's "Mark Twan Tonght" delghted a packed audence at the Presdent's Annversary Concert last week. Through hs skll n make-up Mr. Chappell was Twan n voce, gestures, and physcal appearance. Dressed n a whte sut and gold watch wth hs whte har flowng, t seemed as f Twan had acutally come back to us. The audence was gven the feelng of Twan's era from the openng monologue "On my return to the Pulpt" to hs last farewells. The lttle looks he gave, the twnkle n hs eye, the smoke rngs he blew, and hs slow shufflng walk, all added to the feelng and atmosphere of Twan's Amerca. - The only major dffculty was n hearng especally at the begnnng as the stage had no mcrophone. Chappell's casual style recreated an evenng at one of Twan's lectures around the turn of the century when Twan was about 70. The few props: a lectern, char, water ptcher, a few scattered books and a cgar gave the aura and flavor to hs beautfully verbalzed memores. One remarkable aspect of the program s that Chappell never knows exactly what hs program wll be. As he knows several hours worth of Twan's materal he usually fts hs selectons to the audence's reactons. As Twan, Chappell descrbed hs early days n San Francsco as a newspaper reporter. Later he embellshed a delghtful evenng wth a chllng ghost story. Sometmes satrcal as he pokes fun a man's fobles, he approaches a phlosophy of lvng and thnkng although he never forces the lstener (or reader) to accept or reject t. It s here we begn to see the man, Mark Twan, emerge. We see someone who s not only a genune wt and humorst, but also someone who has a deep concern for man. It's fnally n hs commentary on war that we see the complete Twan. Before t had always been bref glmpses, but now we see a man who loves lfe and ts pleasures, who has a real wt, but mostly we see how unversal man's deas are, how tme changes deas less than we thnk. Our mnds were transported back to a dfferent tme and when t was tme to leave we almost hated to go. 7 **f'^, > «-." «. «-< m * <+ m'm-tn'*'*-*.- Page S-Thur$day, December I, 1971-THE EASTERN PROGRESS BY JIM KURK Progress Sports Edtor Colonels Favored In OVC It's basketball season agan n Kentucky, and once agan the "hoop hystera" that overcomes ths state every wnter s here. Ths season looks lke t could be an especally memorable one for Eastern fans as the Colonels have the makngs of an OVC chamdonshp club. Eastern s the choce of many experts as the favorte n the OVC roundball race ths year. Manly ths s because the Colonels have four starters returnng from the last year's squad whch fnshed second n the league, had a fne 16-8 overall record, and pushed Western's natonally thrd place team to the hlt before fallng by one pont n overtme. Judgng from ths t's no wonder the Colonels are hghly regarded around the league. They have the most talented returnees of any conference team, and whle there were several good freshman teams around the OVC last year, Eastern's could hold ts own wth any. So ts obvous that they seem to have the best blend of experenced, proven performers and talented newcomers. Of course, George Bryant heads the lst of Eastern's returnees. The 6 foot guard from Burnsde electrfed the home fans last year wth hs long-range gunnng, especally the nght when he shattered the school record for feld goals aganst Vrgna Tech and n hs dazzlng performance aganst Western despte an njured knee. Bryant averaged almost 25 ponts per game last year and was runner up to Western Al- Amercan Jm McDanels n the league MVP votng. The Colonels also have Blly Burton, a 6-3 senor guard and co-captan who has mpressed fans here wth hs hustle and teamwork for two years now. Burton s a superb floor leader and an adequate scorer, and teams wth Bryant to gve the squad a great guard combo. Charle Mtchell, the squad's second leadng scorer, adds scorng and reboundng punch to the forecourt, and co-captan Daryl Dunagan s steady n all phases of the game. The conference race looks lke a real scramble ths tme. Murray and Morehead both have an outstandng group of sophomores, Western wll be tough as usual and could be real trouble f ther many njury problems are solved, and Austn Peay has probably ther best team n years. Eastern's schedule ncludes natonal powers Florda State, Dayton, and possbly Jacksonvlle besdes the OVC opponents and a tough opener played last nght aganst Southwestern Lousana. Both started last year, wth Kng averagng a sold 23 ponts a Morehead Nps Colonels 10-7 Lackng the bg plays when they needed them most, the Eastern Colonels closed out ts 1971 football season wth a 10-7 loss to Morehead. "We just haven't been able to get the bg play when we need t most," Colonels head coach Roy Kdd sad. "Ths has been true all season long and was one of the man reasons we ended the season " Although beng outganed by a substantal margn by the Morehead offense, Eastern was tralng by only three ponts wth fve mnutes to go n the game and had a frst down on the Eagles' 13-yard lne. "We had a real good drve n the last quarter but couldn't get the ball across the goal lne. We tred a feld goal and t mght have been good had t not been for a bad placement on the tee by our holder. Woods, Florence, rehearse ther parts as Laura and Jm. The play, about a lonely Perform Tonght Photo by Donald Wallbaum grl and her collecton of small glass anmals, opened last nght and wll run untl Sunday n the Pearl Buchanan Theatre. Fve Productons Scheduled U Players Plan Dramatc Menagere BY KA IIIY MAY Staff Wrter Ths year, the Unversty Players, socal organzaton for those nterested n theater, wll present three major productons. "She Stoops to Conquer" was presented earler ths fall, and "The Glass Menagere" wll be presented the frst week of December. The thrd producton, unknown as of yet, wll be n the sprng. They wll also present a chldren's theater producton and a reader's theater producton of "The Canterbury Tales." Membershp of the Players now approxmately thrty has doubled n the^past year. Bu (here are always many openngs for workers n art, make-up, publcty, musc, usherng and castng. Dr. Haller T. Laughln, assocate professor of drama and speech and sponsor of the Unversty Players, stresses that actors n the plays do not have to be drama or speech majors. Many actors n the Players have had no prevous experence. The organzaton sponsors many trps throughout the year. Interested members attend the castng for summer theater productons across the state held by the Kentucky Theater Assocaton. They can also attend the South Eastern Theater Conference held n Columba, South Carolna, for three days the frst week n March. Ten members of the Unversty Players were n Kdney Machne Recpent, Lucy, Des For the past few weeks a drve was held to collect General Mlls coupons to help obtan a kdney dalyss machne for Bll Lucy, 31, of Irvne who suffered from a termnal kdney dsease. Sunday, November 21st, Lucy ded n a Cncnnat hosptal. A t t t I l former school teacher, Lucy, was also an employee of General Mlls before hs dsease forced hm to retre. Lucy suffered from a dsease whch s not uncommon n Kentucky and n the Unted States. Kdney dsease makes t necessary for a machne to remove the posons n the blood because t renders the kdneys useless. Although t was known that Lucy's case was termnal, a kdney machne helped keep hm alve n the hosptal. The dalyss unt that was to be obtaned from the coupons would have allowed hm to lve at home for the duraton of hs lfe; hs wfe workng the machne at home when needed. Of the 800,000 coupons from General Mlls products needed to obtan the machne, whch would become the property of the state, 700,000 had been collected when Lucy ded and the deadlne was December 1st. summer stock n Kentucky last summer. Ths experence provdes more job opportuntes for them. The bg trp of the year for the Unversty Players s ther trp to New York Cty to see as many plays as possble. Last year they were able to see nne plays n sx days. On many occasons, (hey were allowed to go back- stage to gan frst-hand nformaton about Broadway and Off-Broadway. They try to attend as many audtons as possble. They also see as many plays n nearby colleges and communtes as can be arranged. Each year the Players conduct one specal project nvolvng the Unversty and the communty. Ths semester they are workng wth local retarded chldren and collectng toys and games for them. Next semester they wll present a specal producton of an. orgnal play about Kentucky. Dr. Laughln sad that the Unversty Players have a very strong rapport and co-operate excellently He sad, "In the past year they have gone from a vrtually dsbanded organzaton to one of the most hghly respected" groups on campus." Dr. Laughln thnks that the new theater to be bult n the Fne Arts Center wll greatly add to the success of the Players. Center Board Expands Programs (Contnued From Page One) Mnor, Susan Poston, Chuck Kelhoffer, Art Cassll, Tyler Cox, Bob Eckle, and Russell Behannon. Dr. John D. Rowlett s charman of the Board. Other faculty and staff members are Mrs. Amy Alexander, Earl Baldwn, Hay ward M. Daugherty, Dr. Sanford Jones, Dr. Nancy Peal, Dr. J.C. Powell and James Way. The workng of the Center Board can best be shown by followng through the sgnng of a pop concert contract. Usually pop concerts operate a semester ahead. The frst step requres the commttee on pop concerts to submt a group to the Center Board for approval. After the group s approved by the entre center Board, Daugherty begns negotatons wth the group's agent. He dscovers how much the group wants through the agent or by contactng another school where the group has appeared. Tckets are prced accordngly after the cost of the group has been ascertaned. "We had been tryng to get Chcago lned up ths sprng ' snce last June," he sad. Ths llustrates the work and tme spent n completng negotatons wth a group. Once the contract s sgned, Daugherty supervses the fulfllment of all agreements n the contract. The type of advertsng has to be consdered and carred out; tckets must be prnted; tcket sellers and ushers contacted; proper lghtng and sound prepared; and even dressng room requrements must be met. "Each group has a dfferent sound requrement because of the type of musc," sad Daugherty. The unversty gets the sound equpment specfed n the contract from a prvate sound agency. The cost of rental averages from fve to seven hundred ffty dollars whle t would cost the Unversty between $30,000 and 140,000 to nstall a permanent sound system. The contracts even specfy the amount of space, coffee and soap to be n the dressng rooms. "If we don't meet every requrement n the contract, they can walk out and stll get ther money," he sad. Besdes all the pcky detals someone s usually sent to meet the performers "We've been unque n offerng hosptalty. They're strangers comng nto a new town; they do a lttle extra "Restore Fort Boonesborough" because we take the tme to consder ther comfort," Daugherty sad. Three man thngs have to be consdered n plannng a pop concert. A major consderaton s whether or not students desre the group on campus. The avalablty of the group at a gven tme and the cost also have to be consdered. Daugherty summed up the general feelng on the en-: tertanment whch has been ' provded ths semester when he sad, "It's gong to be hard to follow t up n the sprng." Dnner Set For Dec. 9 "Restore Fort Boonesborough" wll be the theme of a dnner to be held Dec. 9 at Eastern. Dr. Tom Clark, hstoran, author and educator, wll speak at the 6:30 p.m. dnner n the Keen Johnson Student Unon Buldng. Dallas McKennon, who plays Cncnnatus on the Danel Boone televson show, wll also appear on the program. The publc s nvted to attend the dnner and a recepton at p.m., sponsored by the Fort Boonesborough State Park Assocaton.» Dr. Robert R. Martn, EKU presdent and also presdent of the Assocaton, sad ts man goal s the restoraton of the Fort. Tckets for the dnner are beng sold for $3.00 each at the Rchmond Chamber of Commerce on a "frst come, frst served bass." Tckets also may be obtaned by malng a check for $3.00 per tcket, payable to Eastern Kentucky Unversty, to the Rchmond Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 785, Rchmond, Ky., Dr. Clark s Dstngushed Professor of Hstory at Indana Unversty and Dstngushed Professor of Hstory Emertus of the Unversty of Kentucky.
