One weekend we have 3 to 4 inches of the snow on the ground and the next we have 70 plus degree sunny days. Other than the snow, plenty of flying has been going on. Our Wednesday Beginners Night is getting to be popular again, not too many students but lots of members out getting in some flights. Remember, Wednesdays are Beginners Night when we train new pilots and they take preference on the flight line. However, if there are no students then the flight line is open. Big thanks to James McCormick, Sr. He treated all those at Beginners Night on the 11 th to a cookout of homemade hamburgers. They were great! At the time of this article the Pattern Match has come and gone. From early indications Bobby has told me that he was getting a good response and inquires for the event, so this year s contest should be very successful (as they are every year.) Good work Bobby! The Spring Picnic will be held on Sunday, April 29. Bring your family out and your favorite dish for our potluck lunch. Bring lots, I have a big appetite! The lunch is scheduled for 1:00pm which will be followed by the first combat match of the season. This year s combat season should be a great one, with many of us now flying the Avenger combat planes. These planes are awesome and are great for combat. They are maneuverable and durable. The competition should be great. The field is looking great. The rye grass that Larry planted in the winter is thriving. We will need to plant some summer grasses before the heat of summer kills the rye grass. The underbrush we cleared from the tree trimming project appears to be under control, with the stumps removed, we should be able to mow in those areas to keep that stuff down. And finally the The Central Texas Air Show on May 4, 5 & 6. As many of you may know we put on a radio controlled flying demonstration. We will have a demonstration Friday evening while we wait for darkness for the night show to begin. On Saturday and Sunday our demonstration will be the opening act of the show. We will need volunteers to help in our participation in the air show, please see the article elsewhere in the newsletter. That s all for now. Respectfully Submitted, Doug Staines President Meeting Minutes Monday, March 26, 2007 Called to Order at 7:30pm by Doug Staines/President. New Members/Visitors no visitors or new members Minutes from the meeting held in February were read by Larry Macie, Acting Secretary; motion to accept minutes as read made by Fred Huber and 2 nd by Don Mondrik. Treasurer,s Report given by Buster Hinkle, Treasurer; motion to accept treasurer,s report as read made by Don Mondrik and 2 nd by Mark Cullison.. Old Business Field Maintenance starting pads were donated by Steve Meyer and are currently in use; tentative herbicide spraying scheduled for Saturday April 7; ladder has been donated by Randy Mennen. Mall Show report was presented by Frank Sodek, Jr., scheduled for March 31 st and April 1 st ; the F-22 RTF Trainer Plane had been obtained for raffle, tickets to go on sale at the Mall show. Spring Picnic report given, scheduled for Sunday April 29; Frank Sodek volunteered to provide beverages; Fred Huber offered to organize the disposable eating utensils. Airshow report was made by Doug Staines. Pattern Match report was given Doug Staines in Bobby s absence. New Business Storage Shed Replacement Fred Huber initiated discussion in regards to a replacement storage shed; several suggestions were offered; Fred Huber offered to head up an initial search for possible replacement and present options at next meeting. Runway Sealant discussion in regards to immediate need to have runway sealed; Buster Hinkle indicated that this had not been done for several years; Don Mondrik offered to obtain a price to have it done professionally. Purchase of Second Mower Don Mondrik presented a

4 Issue No. 144 Tuesday, April 24, 2007 The Temple Aero Modeler 4 proposal to purchase a used Mower from an estate for a price well below fair market price; motion made by Larry Macie in support of this proposal and 2 nd by Ed Weems; Don will determine the actual costs and notify club officers. Blunder Award Two candidates for consideration were received: Doug Staines crashing Mark Cullison s trainer plane and Fred Huber with inflight failure of the wing of his brand new Avenger combat plane. Fred Huber was voted this month s winner of the Blunder Award. Meeting adjourned at 8:45pm. Minutes recorded by Larry Macie/Acting Secretary, and submitted by Doug Staines/President. ************************************************** 2007 Mall Show by Frank Sodek Our club held its annual Mall Show on Saturday and Sunday, March 31 st and April 1st in an empty store front in Temple Mall. Ten club members brought a total of 33 entries for the show. We had a nice variety of planes, helicopters and even a skydiver for the spectators to view. Club members answered questions about the planes being shown and about the hobby, plus handed out free modeling magazines and info about our club. We had RC videos going all day and we had both of the club s RealFlight RC flight simulators running for those spectators wanting to get a feel for flying RC models. In attempt to pass the time and also get the attention of folks walking by the store, several members flew mini foamy helicopters outside the store. Andy managed to get his stuck behind a wall about 15 feet up, but luckily was able to retrieve it thanks to a tall extension ladder that Mall security provided. We sold about $250 in raffle tickets during the show. A lot of tickets were sold on Saturday, but ticket sales on Sunday were down compared to prior years. On behalf of the club I want to give a big Thank You to Max Blose and the Waco Hobby Stop for providing at cost the F-22 RTF trainer for the raffle. We also made several good contacts with folks that seemed to be genuinely interested in joining in on the fun with us. Each year we hold a People s Choice contest in which we get mall patrons to vote for their favorite model. There were a total of 771 votes cast for this year s contest. First place winner this year with 161 votes (21% of the vote) was Mark Cullison s beautiful Stearman biplane. Second place winner with 112 votes (15%) was Larry Macie s 3D Quest (wow, what a nice recovering job!). In third place was Doug Staines scale P-47, with 88 votes. John Cobb won fourth place (64 votes) with his giant scale FW-190, one of two really big warbirds that he brought to the show. Fifth place was awarded to Ed Weems really nice F4U-Corsair. It was definitely a year for scale planes, with only Larry s Quest being the exception in the top 5 places. The club member with the most planes entered was Fred Huber, with eight entries, followed closely by Mark Cullison with seven. Finally I want to thank all of the members who brought their planes to the show, and especially to those members who gave up a big part of a really nice spring weekend to help out with showing off our club and our planes to the community. There were a lot of you who put in many hours at the show, and it s because of all your hard work that this year s show was such a big success. Now that we re finished showing them off, let s go fly em! 5 Issue No. 144 Tuesday, April 24, 2007 The Temple Aero Modeler 5 Safety Report Safety is mostly common sense and courtesy Most of our safety rules are simple courtesy and common sense. For example: no high speed low passes while other pilots are present. Some are not so obvious: starting engines facing away from the spectator area. At first glance this seems discourteous - exhaust and prop blast; but, if a prop blade fails it will not endanger anyone in the spectator area. Another rule that seems silly for electrics is not starting (or arming) the motor in the spectator area - hey, it s only an electric - Even the small electrics can do significant damage and electrics are the most at risk for accidental starts - so start (arm) those electrics on the other side of the fence. So much for the soap box. Our safety results have been very good - let s keep it that way. A question has come up regarding the restraints. How do you move your plane from the restraint to the taxiway near the runway if you do not have a helper? (obviously a helper carrying the plane is the best way) Once the plane is started, set the throttle to idle. Place the transmitter at the desired location where no one can accidentally bump or change the throttle setting (remember a helper is best and other pilots will be glad to help), then carry the plane from the restraint to the transmitter. While still holding the plane, retrieve the transmitter. This prevents accidental throttle application to an unrestrained plane either by a bumped throttle or interference. Seems like a big deal over nothing but we have had occasional glitches that have affected throttle, this way we keep all body parts attached. Submitted by Paul Horan Safety Officer ************************************************** >>>REMINDER<<< Please bring your old RC magazines to the air show, spring picnic or next meeting so we can give them away to the public at the air show. >>> Calling All Volunteers <<< Your Help Needed at the Central Texas Air Show Our Club will be participating in the Central Texas Air Show on May 4, 5 and 6. Our participation will consist of 2 aspects, in which volunteers will be needed in both. We will have an information tent on the grounds of the air show to which we will offer information on the Sport of Radio Controlled Aeronautics and our club. We will have a static display of our aircraft, so I encourage members to bring their planes to show off. We will also sell raffle tickets for the RTF F-22 trainer plane. The winning ticket will be drawn at the conclusion of the air show on Sunday. We will need help on Friday to set up and staff the information tent on all three days and tear down on Sunday evening. The other aspect of our participation will be a Radio Controlled Flying Demonstration. We will have three demonstrations. The first one is scheduled for Friday evening, May 4 th. We will be allotted a time frame prior to sunset before the show starts at dusk. The other two demonstrations will take place at the start of the air show on Saturday and Sunday, around 12 to 1pm. We are actually the opening act of the show on both days. We will have a 20 minute time slot in which we are planning to feature large scale aerobatics, helicopter aerobatics, and jet turbine flight. The last demonstration will be a combat match. We will need help on the flight line to assist with the demonstration with aircraft start up, launching, spotting and aircraft recovery. We will need plenty of help prior to and during the radio controlled flying demonstration, the period of 11am to 2 pm, as we will need people at the information tent and flight line at the same time, It would be greatly appreciated if you can spare a few hours or the entire day on any or all three days. The hours will be: Friday: 3-4 pm to conclusion of the show. Saturday: 8 am to conclusion of the show Sunday: 8 am to conclusion of the show Let me know as soon as possible if you can help.
