2 TRYOUT INFORMATION REQUIRED DOCUMENTS In order to participate, you must submit the following items via by April 7, 2017: Completed tryout registration form with a head shot Letter of recommendation from school or all star coach (not required, but recommended) You must bring the following items to the first day of tryouts: Signed and completed Rutgers University Release form. Proof of a physical within the last 12 months (must include date and physician s signature). Copy of your current health insurance card (front and back) Printed copy of your head shot Graduating high school seniors or transfer candidates must also bring a copy of your acceptance letter for enrollment to Rutgers University (wait list letters are also acceptable). Current Rutgers students will need to provide printed proof of their cumulative grade point average. CHEERLEADING TRYOUT INFORMATION All candidates must be full time students, accepted incoming freshmen or transfer students, or wait listed students at Rutgers University. If you are 17 years or younger, you MUST have a legal guardian present to fill out and sign paper work. Please have a pen with you for this procedure. All required skills, tryout rules, and requirements are stated in this packet. The schedule is for information purposes only and is subject to change. Please visit for updates. All times are approximate. Final team selection will be based solely on the discretion of the Rutgers University Spirit Program coaching staff. Any out of town candidates are responsible for their own overnight housing and expenses during the tryout. 3 SCHEDULE DAY 1 FRIDAY, APRIL 14, 6:00 PM Rutgers Athletic Center Times and locations are subject to change and will be communicated during the weekend. 6:00 PM Sign in / participation clearance by Rutgers administration. Receive tryout number to be used all weekend. 6:15 PM Coach s introduction and overview of selection process, program requirements, and schedules. 6:20 PM Warm-up 6:30 PM Standing Tumbling Practice Standing tumbling warm-up Perform standing handsprings in numerical order Perform standing back tucks in numerical order Standing backhandspring back tucks in numerical order (looking for no steps) 6:45 PM Running Tumbling Practice Warm-up passes in numerical order Show best running tumbling skills in numerical order 7:15 PM Partner Stunt Practice Men and women will be divided into random groups (returning members will be evenly distributed amongst groups) 20 minute session to warm-up and practice chairs, extensions, and liberties with each person in group Coaching staff may move people to different groups. Final half hour to display stunts with higher level of difficulty. 8:15 PM Depending on number of applicants and skill level, there may be a cut made by the coaching staff. 8:15 PM Break 8:20 PM Fight Song Review: Instructional material video links will be sent to you upon receipt of your ed registration form. This will be a review of that material only. 8:40 PM Game Day Instruction and Demonstration 9:00 PM Those moving on will sign up for an interview; times based on experience with the program (Rutgers juniors first, sophomores second, freshmen third, high school seniors fourth) DAY 2 SATURDAY, APRIL 15, 9:00 AM Rutgers Athletic Center 9:00 AM Interviews Formal interview with judges, coaches, and Rutgers Spirit Program alumni. Dress is Business MEN dress shirt, tie, jacket optional, no jeans, no sneakers WOMEN business suit with pants or skirt, business dress, no cocktail/prom dresses, no jeans, no sneakers Interviews will last approximately minutes 11:00 AM Partner Stunt Evaluation Review basic stunts from prior day Practice stunts with higher level of difficulty Evaluated on technique, flexibility (if performing a heel stretch or arabesque), grips, execution 12:00 PM Tumbling Evaluation Standing tumbling warm-up Perform standing back tucks in numerical order Perform standing backhandspring back tucks in numerical order Perform other elite standing tumbling in numerical order (continued) 3
4 SCHEDULE (continued) Tumbling Evaluation (continued) Running tumbling warm-up Perform best running tumbling skills (2-3 passes in numerical order) 12:30 PM Break 1:00 PM Fight Song and Game Day Evaluation Judges will be made up of alumni, industry experts, and/or Rutgers school administrators. Judges will assess your fight song and sideline performances, crowd appeal, use of gymnastics and partner stunts. Everyone will perform together and judging assessments will occur throughout. 2:00 PM Rutgers University Coed Cheerleaders announced Those making the team are required to remain at the RAC for a meeting. 2:15 PM Team Meeting *Final team selection is solely the discretion of the Rutgers University Spirit Program coaching staff. *Times are subject to change and will be communicated during the weekend. AFTER THE TRYOUT If you make the team: You will be required to stay for a short meeting to learn more about your obligations and schedules. If you do not make the team: The decision will be final. If you would like advice on areas in which we believe you could improve, you may contact the coaching staff via starting on Monday, June 12. APPEARANCE Please be aware that this is an important part of the selection process. You should be game ready at all times throughout the entire tryout process. Remember you are trying out for a very high profile position representing Rutgers University. DO NOT wear anything during the selection that features another school or university. Women We ask that you have game make-up on at all times and have your hair styled as if you were at a game. Game ready makeup includes mascara, eye liner, blush, lipstick, etc. Bows/ribbon are discretionary, but please be advised that all bows must be worn on the back of the head, not on top. No jewelry. Tattoos must be covered at all times throughout tryouts. Clothing Days 1 and 2 Leotard, sports bra, tank top, or t-shirt and shorts. Color choices are red, black, gray, or white. (Tank tops and t-shirts must be tucked in.) Day 2 (Interview) Business attire. (Please see Interview above for more information.) Day 2 (Tryout) Sports bra, tank top, or t-shirt and shorts (tank tops and t-shirts must be tucked in). Men Hair should be neatly trimmed. Facial hair should be neat and trimmed, although clean shaven is preferred. No jewelry. Tattoos must be covered. Clothing Days 1 and 2 T-shirt and shorts. All shirts must be tucked in. 5 GENERAL TRYOUT INFORMATION All material (fight song and game day material) should be executed in a collegiate manner conducive to college athletics. Excessive facial expressions, arm waving, and wide motions are not encouraged. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Question: Can I bring my own partner for my personal tryout? Answer: No. Only male and female candidates trying out for the team may stunt with each other. Exceptions include Rutgers alumni cheerleaders invited by the coaching staff. Question: Will all stunts be spotted during the tryout process even if I can do the stunt? Answer: YES! All stunts will be spotted for safety purposes. Question: Do former members always make the team each year, or do they have to tryout each year? Answer: Veteran members must try out each year. Question: How do I get a partner to try out with? Answer: There are a few ways to get a partner: Everyone will be randomly placed into groups on the first evening and you may decide to pick someone in your group for your other stunts. Get in touch with someone ahead of time who you may know is trying out. Bring someone to tryouts who may be interested in joining the team. 5
6 TEAM INFORMATION RESPONSIBILITIES Your responsibility as a Rutgers University cheerleader is to perform at all assigned games, rallies, community functions, marketing events, and (if selected) the UCA College Nationals. Your main job is to motivate crowds and get them involved in the games and supporting the teams. Cheerleaders must conduct themselves with respect and professionalism, and represent the University positively with maturity inside and outside of mandatory team functions, practices, and events. COMMITMENT Cheerleading at Rutgers University is a year-long commitment. No one-season or half-year participation is allowed. ACADEMIC CLASSES Members of the Rutgers University cheerleading team are required to schedule classes around practices and strength and conditioning sessions. (See schedules below.) OUTSIDE ACTIVITIES All outside activities including work must be discussed at your interview. Participation in the Rutgers Cheerleading program must take precedence over all other activities, including fraternities and sororities. Participation in club/all star cheerleading while a member of the Rutgers cheerleading program is prohibited. SUMMER Mandatory: Two-day practice sessions July and Aug. 1-2 UCA Camp (mandatory; Aug. 3-6 in Wisconsin) Pre-Season Camp (mandatory; Aug at Camp Mason, Aug. 30 Sep. 1 at Rutgers; schedules TBD) Sunday night stunt practices throughout the summer (3 mandatory with partner) Campus, community, and marketing events (must complete 10 throughout the year) FALL Practices 3x per week Mondays, 8:00 11:00 AM Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:30 10:30 PM Strength and conditioning sessions Tuesday and Thursday mornings Campus, community, and marketing events Football games (including post-season) Home and select away men s and women s basketball games Nationals practices after announcement of team in September (these will replace Monday mornings) WINTER Nationals team will practice most days over Winter break All team members are required to cheer their scheduled games over Winter break. SPRING UCA College National Championship Practices 2x per week (dependent on men s and women s basketball practices and game schedules) Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:30 10 PM Strength and conditioning sessions mornings TBD (two to three times per week) Home and select away men s and women s basketball games. Conference and potential NIT/NCAA basketball tournaments Do not plan any Spring Break trips without consulting the coaching staff. Campus, community, and marketing events 6
7 GENERAL TEAM INFORMATION During basketball season, couples have rotating schedules in order to cover the regular season games. Specific couples will be chosen for tournament travel during post-season. All game material will be posted on our private team Facebook page. It is your responsibility to learn all the material via video or practice with veteran members. All uniforms must be kept clean and presentable. All uniforms, equipment, and practice and travel gear provided to you is the property of Rutgers University. They must all be kept clean and in good shape. 7

10 INFORMED CONSENT/WAIVER/RELEASE IF 18 & OVER I,, will be utilizing the recreational/athletic facilities at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey on Friday, April 14 and Saturday, April 15, I recognize and acknowledge the following: I am aware that working out, exercising or playing sports or other strenuous athletic activities at the recreation/athletic facilities can result in serious injury such as sprained ankles, broken limbs, etc; Participation is voluntary and is at my own risk; I further acknowledge that exercising is a strenuous activity which requires proper physical conditioning; That I am physically able to participate and know of no disability or prior injuries which would prevent my participation; That I will follow all rules established by the recreational/athletic facilities; In the event that a need for emergency medical services arises, I authorize and consent to such service being provided and assume the cost thereof; I understand I am not covered by any insurance plan of Rutgers, The State University.
