2 About Team Rio Team Rio is a group of dedicated, energetic runners who train together for the Country Music Marathon on April 28. Each Team Rio member raises at least $250 in pledges for the children of Big Brothers Big Sisters while also running or walking the 13.1 miles of the half marathon. Headed by running captains Marty Roe and Jimmy Olander, and walkers captain Gene Johnson, the members of Diamond Rio are each incredibly supportive of this amazing group of athletes whether they are running in the midst of the group of cheering on the sidelines. The group has two team trainers, veteran marathoner Billy Smith and Jan Stumbo, and they meet weekly for group runs and encouragement. Team Rio members range for veteran marathon runners to first time walkers who had never before considered completing such a feat and everything in between is the third year for Team Rio, with the 2006 group of approximately 85 runners and walkers raising $50,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters and the inaugural edition in 2005 having approximately 45 members raising over $25,000. Children served by BBBSMT are primarily from single-parent homes or grandparent-led homes and most households are economically disadvantaged. Nearly 30% of children served through BBBSMT have an incarcerated parent. Currently, 60% are African-American; 31% are Caucasian; 6% are Multi-Racial; and 3% represent other ethnic groups. 47% are boys; 53% are girls. Most range in age from six to fifteen. 68% reside in Davidson County (Nashville). The rest of the children live in the eight surrounding counties. Diamond Rio started their relationship with BBBS in 1996 and continues to be National Spokespersons for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. 4 Thursday, 01/04/07 Team Rio looking for more than a few good members By BEVERLY KEEL Need a little motivation to achieve your New Year's resolution of improving your health? Diamond Rio comes to the rescue. The country music group has formed Team Rio to compete in the Country Music Marathon and Half Marathon on April 28 and raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee. This year, DR's Jimmy Olander and Marty Roe are the celebrity running captains and Gene Johnson is the celebrity walking captain. Coaches Billy Smith and Jan Stumbo provide weekly training schedules and oneon-one training tips to participants, who gather each weekend to share the pain of a long-distance run.

5 "We have everything from walkers to people who are absolutely blazing fast and anything in between," says Jimmy. "I can't tell you how much fun it's been and how many great folks we have doing it with us." Jimmy says you don't have to be an experienced runner to participate. Indeed, he wasn't. "I am a Clydesdale, big time," jokes Jimmy, a gym rat. "You can see these feet hitting the pavement and it looks like there's a crushing blow hitting every time. This was the first thing I ever did as a runner." It all started on a dare in 2004, when Modern Management's Renee Behrman-Greiman told Jimmy, "I'm thinking about doing it." He replied, "I'll do it if you'll do it." Forming a team to raise money for charity, they recruited about 60 people the first year and 100 the second, raising a total of more than $70,000 for charity. "Renee wants to have over 200 runners and raise over $100,000 this year, so the push is on, and we are in heavy recruitment," he says. Those interested are invited to a kick-off meeting tonight at 6:15 at Woodmont Hills Church of Christ, 3710 Franklin Pike.
