18 Reading Tips Here are some engaging ways to use this book to help children build important early math skills. Before Reading: 4 Create a sense of excitement by using a wet sponge to write the numeral 10 on a chalkboard. Can children guess what you ve written before it disappears? 4 Invite each of the children to trace the numeral 10 in the air and to hold up ten fingers. 4 Display the book s cover. Ask children to identify the numeral 10 in the top right corner. What do they see ten of? (ten fingers) Then ask kids to use picture clues to predict what might happen in the story. During Reading: 4 Read the story straight through with gusto. This will give kids an opportunity to enjoy its whimsical plot and rollicking rhyme. 4 Read the story a second time. Invite children to explore the illustrations and to count the girl s ten fingers. What other sets of ten do they see? 4 Read the story a third time. Call attention to moments when the word ten appears in the text. If you like, encourage kids to clap ten times whenever they hear the word. After Reading: 4 Display the Can You Find? picture on pages Challenge children to locate and count the requested objects as well as other sets of ten (including ten kids, ten presents, ten puppets, ten balloons, ten cupcakes, ten flowers, and ten stars). 4 Read Ten Cheer on page 16 several times, encouraging children to chime in and enthusiastically perform the designated movements including ten claps, ten jumps, and ten stomps. 4 To reinforce number sense, give each of the children a set of manipulatives such as dried beans, snap beads, or plastic teddy bear counters. Challenge kids to organize them into groups of ten. For added fun, work together to make a Ten Collage in which you clip sets of ten items from magazines (such as pictures of ten fingers, ten pencils, ten birds), then affix them to posterboard and display.
