SCENIC HILLS Christian Serving Hudson & Osceola Community Homes and Services Newsletter Volume Five Years is Quickly Approaching by: Natalie Rivard, Administrator November 7 th, 2011 is a very memorable and special day here at CCH of Osceola; it is the day we admitted our first resident. Can you imagine being the only resident in a facility built for 60 people? Can you imagine having activity, housekeeping, dietary and nursing staff all waiting to see what you need because you were the only person they had to serve? Of course that atmosphere did not last long. We admitted many more residents in the days and weeks to follow, but for those of us who were here for those first 24 hours, it was quite surreal. Since 2011, our facility has celebrated many successes. We have strengthened our relationship with the Osceola Medical Center (OMC) through collaboration efforts. The link that physically connects our two operations is not the only way we are connected. OMC provides us with lab and imaging services, cable television channels, IT support and a medical director. We, in turn, provide OMC with dining services for their inpatient meals, catering requests and we staff their cafeteria, the Acorn Grill. Our relationship with our Hudson campus has also grown; we often share our expertise with each other as well as the business office, dietary, social services and human resources staff. In our case, having two campuses is definitely better than having one! Most notably our Assisted Living and short-term rehabilitation services have really flourished. When we first opened, Hearthside was marketed as a memory care residence. Although we still care for residents with dementia in Hearthside, we also opened our doors to those who needed our services but did not have a dementia diagnosis. Additionally, our transitional care and short-term rehabilitation services have been very successful. The majority of our residents in the nursing home admit directly from the hospital after an acute event or surgery and our nursing and rehabilitation departments work closely together to help them return to their previous level of health. We have also partnered with the local schools, churches and businesses for various programs and initiatives. We became Music & Memory certified and provide individualized music on ipods for residents. We purchased a transportation bus that allows residents to go on outings to local restaurants, parks, parades, etc. We brought the Remember Project to the Art Barn to start a discussion about dementia in our community. Through these experiences, we have made many meaningful relationships along the way. Our residents, families, volunteers, employees and friends are the reason why we do what we do and ultimately why we exist. Please stay tuned as we plan to have an anniversary celebration in November!

CHAPLAIN S CHAT by Rev. Beth Faeth I was offered the privilege of delivering the re-dedication prayer at the recent 35 th anniversary celebration of CCH. It was a wonderful event, with hundreds of people in attendance. I give thanks for the people who heard God s call to create a sanctuary here offering care, comfort and a home for many. The vision that created Christian Community Homes continues to expand and develop through the staff, residents and treasured volunteers here, and with God s help we have the opportunity to bring joy, respite, safety and healing for generations to come. It is an honor to participate in that vision, and our anniversary celebration was a reminder of just how many faithful folks make CCH a very special place. A prayer of celebration and re-dedication upon the 35 th anniversary of Christian Community Homes: Holy and Gracious God, We give you thanks for the vision of a few that has provided healing, care and a home for many. We ask You to bless this celebration today as we lift gratitude for 35 sustaining years of care and hope at Christian Community Homes. Greetings from the CCH Foundation! It has been a busy few months for the Foundation committee. We are delighted that we have joined in the effort to support CCH staff in furthering their professional skill and education by awarding a firstever scholarship. The scholarship is for $500, and we see this being an annual award to a dedicated and deserving staff member. This scholarship is in addition to two awarded by the Sultze Scholarship Fund, and two awarded by the Helping Hands Scholarship Fund. The Foundation also got involved in the Give Big fund raising effort by matching donations to CCH Osceola up to $2500. Give Big is a one day fund raising extravaganza all done online. This year s funds raised through the Give Big effort are dedicated to the Safe in the Sun campaign to purchase awnings so residents can enjoy these beautiful summer days out of doors. Lastly, the Foundation also took a step to all support staff at the two campuses by dedicating funds for appliances, an air conditioner and furniture for the planned renovations for the staff lounges at CCH and CCH Osceola. These are very small tokens of appreciation for all the CCH staff does for our residents! All of these efforts are driven by the goal of promoting a high quality of life for residents of CCH. For now, enjoy the summer weather. Judy Freund CCC Foundation Chair Infuse us with Your wisdom to continue Your mission here, that we might be steadfast in welcoming those who call this their home, that we might comfort those who are ill or are hurting, that we might tend to the spirits of those who seek respite, that we might provide guidance for those needing strength. May our hands and our hearts provide healing in manifold ways. Help us, O God, to celebrate each individual we serve as unique and precious in your sight. May we be known for our compassion and love, and may all who hallow these buildings know sanctuary and peace. Re-dedicate, we pray, Christian Community Homes for the giving of hope and courage. May the care we provide in these buildings be graced with Your love, may the residents be cherished, may the staff be respected, may the volunteers be appreciated, may Your name be glorified. We give You thanks, most Holy One, for the vision of a few that has provided healing, care and a home for many. May what has begun continue with the abundance of your blessings, now and forevermore. Amen. 4 HUDSON CAMPUS NEWS CCHS Recognizes Scholarship Winners Christian Community Homes & Services recognized and celebrated five of our wonderful team members! Jordan Madden, Jennifer Steele, Kelsey Pierce, Karlye Peterson and Jennifer Varga each received a $500 scholarship! We are very grateful to have such wonderful donors who made these scholarships possible for us to give to our employees! Edie Sultze, a resident of our campus, decided after her husband Loren had such wonderful care at CCH she wanted to give back! So the Loren & Edie Sultze Scholarship was introduced last year! But it did not stop there! One year later the Suzukida family wanted to honor their mother who also was a resident of our campus and heard about the Sultze Scholarship and decided that it was a perfect way to honor their mother. During the ceremony both families touched on how education and scholarships had touched both of their families! Christian Community Campus Foundation also awarded a $500 scholarship. We are so thankful to have such support from our community! The Loren & Edie Sultze Scholarship was given out by Edie (L) to Jordan Madden at the reception held at WinterGreen on the CCH Campus. Judy Freund, Chair of the Christian Community Campus Foundation, awards Jennifer Varga with a $500 scholarship. John Suzukida (C) awarded the two $500 Helping Hands Scholarships to Kelsey Pierce (L) and Karlye Peterson (R). Jennifer Steele from CCH of Osceola also received a $500 scholarship given by the Loren & Edie Sultze Scholarship Fund. TEAM MEMBER NEWS by Jennie Orman, Director of Nursing Tammy Prebish, RN We are thrilled to introduce our new Transitional Care/Shortterm Rehab Clinical Nurse Manager, Tammy Prebish, RN. Tammy started at CCH 3 years ago as an LPN while going to school to become an RN. Tammy has a long history in health care and previously worked for a home health agency. Tammy graduated with her RN from WITC-New Richmond. In her free time she enjoys camping, hiking, kayaking; anything outdoorsy. Her fur baby Angel, a 7 year old miniature schnauzer, has a pacemaker due to her medical conditions. Fun fact, Tammy was born on a leap year! Tammy s office is located in the Transitional Care unit. Stop in and welcome her to her new position! Grete Rehbein, who had been the Transitional Care/Short-term Rehab Clinical Nurse Manager, has moved to the front of the building and is now the Clinical Nurse Manager for the long term population. WALK TO END ALZHEIMER S JOIN OUR TEAM Join the CCH-Hudson team on the Walk to End Alzheimer s Saturday, September 17 in New Richmond. This is an extremely important event to help raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer s care, support, and research. Alzheimer s disease is the 6 th leading cause of death in the country. And it is the only one of the top ten causes that cannot be prevented, cured, or slowed at least for now!! Research is growing but funding is needed to continue that research. Most Americans have either been affected directly or know someone who has been affected by Alzheimer s disease. So not only is research needed but support services are needed now. If you would like to join our team or if you cannot join the team but would like to support the team, follow these directions: Go to: search for New Richmond, WI ~ Team search: Christian Community Home You can then make a donation to the team or join the team Or you can contact Brenda Magadanz at SCENIC HILLS NEWSLETTER

OSCEOLA CAMPUS NEWS A BIG thank you to all who donated to our Give Big St. Croix Valley fundraiser this year! WE ARE 70% OF THE WAY THERE! We are still seeking donations for our Safe in the Sun campaign. We have raised 70% of the funds needed to purchase our motorized awnings for the four courtyards. It is not too late to help, you can make a cash or check donation but putting it in the locked mailbox in our front entrance or give it to any of our office staff! We are truly fortunate to be part of this community that not only is involved but gives back to its elders. Congratulations to our senior team members who celebrated their High School Graduation! Volunteers making the difference at CCHS by Shelly DeStasio, Volunteer Coordinator In April we celebrate our appreciation for our volunteers. It is a wonderful way for us to serve those who serve our residents every day. CCHS has over 175 volunteers who accounted for over 5000 hours last year alone. A large portion of these volunteers have been with us for many years along with a handful of them that have been here since CCH was built in 1981! Volunteers come to us in all shapes and sizes as well; as young as our 2 year old twins at CCHO or our 2nd graders from St Patrick s playing games with our residents, middle school students who play Bingo, high school students who do manicures as well as our long time volunteers that run our Church services many times a week, Bingo, craft time, reading to the residents, special outings and our very important 1:1 volunteers who visit with our residents. Let s not forget about our furry friends as well, you can see it in the residents eyes how much they enjoy their visits. All of these volunteers make a difference in our lives every day and the donation of their time and energy is very much appreciated by all of us here at both campuses. If you have a special talent that you would like to share please contact in Hudson, Shelly at or Tia in Osceola at or visit our website cchhudson.org or cchosceola.org to get an application. 6 CAMPUS AUXILIARY NEWS CCH s 35 Year Anniversary Celebration! What an amazing evening we had over 300 people came by to celebrate 35 years of care and support for our community s seniors.the music, blue skies and the smell of BBQ made it a night to remember. It was so wonderful seeing old friends and colleagues come together to reminisce about how far we have come and how they played a part in our wonderful organization. Pastor Averrill told the story of how CCH came about and all the hard work of the Hudson community members and area churches. He was so happy to come back home and see all the changes made to ensure a bright future for CCH. If it wasn t for all the support of all of our friends, families and residents we would not be where we are today. We are very grateful! 35 YEARS OF CARING FOR OUR COMMUNITY 1981 to 2016 Above: Darryl Y, Jerry H & Don Pederson Right: Lorraine B, Lucy L & Janis H Thank You CCHS Friends! 7 ACTIVITY ALLEY HUDSON by Deb Tonsager, Therapeutic Recreation Manager/Music Therapist I often hear the phrase There s always a lot going on here (CCH). I couldn t say it any better. There really is a lot going on here. Our calendar stays filled to the brim with programs that we hope give everyone things to look forward to in their days. Some of our residents say that they look forward to the morning exercise groups while others say that they really enjoy the weekly Friday Happy Hour. We have residents who enjoy getting together for coffee in groups and others who enjoy basking in the outdoor sun with a good book. We strive to have something for everyone. This past quarter we added a few more exciting program opportunities for our residents to attend. We held a Painting with Audrey class in April. Audrey Martin is a Hudson artist who leads private classes in the area. We Painting with Audrey - We did it! contacted Audrey and asked if she would come to CCH and lead a class for some of our residents. She is familiar with CCH since her grandmother Mary Jackman was a past resident of the CCH community. The residents all did such an amazing job painting Robin in Spring. I don t know who was happier with their artwork the residents or me. They were proud of their masterpieces, and I was very proud of each of them. Long Term Care Week was filled with abundant laughter and smiles. We had our Annual Spelling Bee with the Hudson Middle School on Monday of that week. The students really gave our residents a run for the trophy and our residents were fierce competitors who gave the students a run for the trophy. This year the 1 st place trophy went to Olivia Marquardt, 2 nd place Don Pederson of Pine Ridge, and 3 rd place went to MacKenzie Korent. We also had entertainment from the Trinity Lutheran Choir that evening. The week also included special music with The Banjo Boys Band on Tuesday, and an ice cream social with the 3M The winners of the Spelling Bee Clowns on Wednesday. Our residents, visitors, volunteers and staff enjoyed the annual exotic animals visit as well as a wonderful square dance experience. The weeklong celebration Clyde nibbling on Elinor concluded with a twist on our usual Friday Happy Hour. We had special entertainment by Rudy Rudesill and served Southern Comfort Punch which has become a popular treat. We would like to say a special THANK YOU to everyone who blesses our campus with your visits. We enjoy having Mary, Jo Ellen and Clyde David Root and his mom Jett enjoying the Hoe Down Happy Hour festivities visitors come to socialize, entertain, and shower our residents with their time and love. The monthly visits from the EP Rock Swanson Stars were a wonderful event to look forward to as was the morning walk with some of the Hudson High School students, teachers and their principal! Staff and Clowns clowning around Violet Wright saying YEE HAW! Marjorie Hughes and two Swanson Stars VOLUME

ACTIVITY ALLEY PINE RIDGE by Brenda Magadanz, Director of Pine Ridge It is hard to believe we are at the mid-summer point already. Where does the time go? The residents at Pine Ridge had a great time celebrating National Long-Term Care Week in May. Our own Don Pederson placed 2 nd in our annual spelling bee with the CCH residents and students from the middle school. Everyone loved the banjo band, the silly clowns, the animals, and the square dancing. Especially the animals!! It was so fun to see the residents interacting with Clyde the baby baboon, to see them snuggling the goats and bunnies, or commenting on the big eyes of the baby lemur. For some reason no one wanted to snuggle the baby alligator Go Figure!! Probably some of the best entertainment of the summer has been the parking lot refurbishing. It doesn t matter the age boys love to watch the big toys. Now we are starting to enjoy getting out on some picnics and having some cookouts at the facility. Each month the residents really enjoy the Concerts in the Garden hosted by the Auxiliary. Don Pederson worked hard at the spelling bee earning a second place finish Bev Hansen gets a good look at the adorable face of this little bunny. Joyce Cassutt has fun holding hands with Clyde, the baby baboon. Bert Bertelsen is surprised to see a baby woodchuck Don Bartels has the magic touch with this baby goat. PINE RIDGE GARDENS by Brenda Magadanz, Director of Pine Ridge The residents in Pine Ridge Gardens also celebrated National Long-Term Care Week. And again, the biggest hit were the baby animals. Some of the residents had a hard time giving up the sleeping goat on their lap or handing over the cuddly bunnies. Clyde was again the hit there were lots of laughs as comments were made about how he looked like someone s uncle or brother. We ended the week with a Hoe Down Happy Hour with live music and lots of dancing. This is one of the favorite things we do in Pine Ridge Gardens. We have been busy planting in the pots and garden boxes. We haven t had to spend too much time watering yet this year. But soon we will be busy pulling weeds and dead heading. The residents are so fortunate and take advantage of every possibility to sit outside in our beautiful garden areas and just enjoy the warm weather, the gentle breezes, and the good company. 8 SCENIC HILLS NEWSLETTER

ACTIVITY ALLEY WINTERGREEN by Jenny Brazzale, WinterGreen Assistant There are more activities going on at WinterGreen than ever before! Starting in March, new afternoon programs were added at 2:30 p.m. to our existing calendar. Each activity is facilitated by a WinterGreen staff member. Cards, board games and puzzles are played on Sunday and Wednesday. A cribbage group has formed on Monday evenings. On Tuesday, we meet in the library for Creative Coloring. Short Story Book Club meets on Thursday where we listen to 30 minutes of short stories and then discuss them. Some of our favorite stories have come out of Reader s Digest, Guideposts and Chicken Soup for the Soul. But by far the most popular new program has been Reminisce and Tea on Saturday. Each week there s a new topic and it s been fun to share our memories as a group. One way that residents raise money for their yearly charitable donations is through the Silent Auction. This year the committee organized another successful auction. Residents and staff donated wonderful items that included carvings, floral arrangements, sewing, dinner gift cards, quilts, movie tickets and much more. Each month for the Talk of the Hour program we have speakers come to WinterGreen. Michelle Bee, the social services Manager at CCH, came to talk about Power of Attorney for Healthcare, Power of Attorney for Finance, Living Wills and Guardianship. Residents came with a lot of good questions and were able to learn more about these complex topics. Dan Goodier, the Executive Director of CCH, came to WinterGreen in March to update the residents on projects being done around campus and upcoming projects that are happening at WinterGreen residents and staff display the butterfly sculpture they made. Travis Sanders explains the benefits of exercising at the Red Oak Center to Edie Sultze during the WinterGreen Trail Walk. Joyce Boettcher gives a book talk while Rae Ann Lyon holds up the book for the audience to see. WinterGreen. Our WingerGreen librarians also gave a talk on books. Rae Ann Lyon and Joyce Boettcher gave residents some great reading suggestions for books that are right here in our library. In May, the theme for Older Americans Month was Blaze a Trail. To celebrate, activities throughout the month focused on trailblazers. We watched a movie called Old! What it means, which interviewed people aged 5 to 100 years old. There was also a Memorial Day program remembering those who blazed a trail for our freedom. The highlight of the month was a trail walk that included stops in the WinterGreen atrium, library and Garden Room. At each stop, staff from across the campus were set up to answer questions and give out information on topics to include nutrition, Medicare, therapy, exercise, assisted living services, volunteer opportunities and religious offerings. To kick off summer, the residents wanted to have a cookout on the newly furnished deck. Over 60 people came out on a wonderfully warm and sunny day to enjoy the start of summer. Hot dogs and brats were grilled out on the deck and residents were encouraged to bring a dish to pass. In June, WinterGreen hosted a celebration of our 30 th anniversary along with CCH s 35 th anniversary. The weather turned out perfect that day so that everyone could enjoy our beautiful campus. The celebration included delicious pulled-pork sandwiches, local bands playing, along with tours and commentary on the history of the campus. It was a great way to celebrate our past while looking forward to the future. In the past few months we have enjoyed outings to the Postmark Grille, Red Lobster, Machine Shed and the Old Southern BBQ Smokehouse. As the summer continues to heat up, we are looking forward to more cookouts on the deck, an outing to Selma s for ice cream, and enjoying walks around our beautiful campus. Pauline Kobylarczyk, Bev Noack and Janis Halverson enjoy themselves during the campus anniversary party. Julie Lohman congratulates Kathy O Connell on her 40 th work anniversary. VOLUME

ACTIVITY ALLEY OSCEOLA Written By: Tia Erickson, Therapeutic Recreation/Volunteer Manager The residents of CCHO and Hearthside Assisted Living have been showered with goodness and feel lucky to be part of this kind, giving community! We celebrated St. Patrick s Day with a lucky bingo party in which Nina Hoverman was truly the luckiest since she not only had bingo before we started but she also won the pot of gold coverall. We had many visitors like three-month-old Jayse Arden, a CCHO volunteer s son being held by Emily Klapste who recently turned 98 years young. In April, we paid tribute to our wonderful volunteers for all they have done to bring joy to our community. Terry Rader and his family have been volunteering since our facility opened by providing music and intergenerational performances with his grandchildren. CCHO and Hearthside residents feel very blessed to be part of their extended families (like so many of our volunteers have become to us) such as Hospice Pastor Derek Washington. He recently led a touching program with us called Blessing of Hands that reached out to all of us through prayer and music. We also had an excellent musical performance from the Osceola Middle School Jazz Band again this year. Crabapple Tree in Courtyard Blessing of Hands with Pastor Derek The spring brought more donations of beauty to our lovely courtyards. The crabapple trees have captured such attention in full bloom and our courtyards all have raised garden beds full of an array of colorful flowers, vegetables and herbs! The boxes were made by Hope Evangelical Church volunteers and the bedding plants were donated by Dennis Tomfohrde, owner of The Shed Nursery in Osceola! We are excited about digging in and watching the goodness grow since many of our residents, like Norma Johnson, have a history of gardening. Our volunteer twins Asher and Abram Pommier turned two years old in June. We had a very fun party where the boys paraded around with shopping carts full of goodies they handed out to everyone. It was a complete joy to see them blow bubbles and open their presents we gave them. We have several bus trips scheduled for the summer months to get out and about including an animal park, picnics, parades and several fishing trips. We are fortunate to live in a community with so many great people and places to enjoy!
