Who would have thought that we'd be over half way through the term so quickly! I wanted to take another opportunity to congratulate our School Leaders. They have an incredible role to play in our school this year, leading the behaviour and student experiences that make this school great. I am looking forward to working with this team of students. Last week we have also had a number of visitors to our school. I would like to extend my thanks to Councillor Duff for her efforts in attending our Student Leader Investiture. If you were unable to make the ceremony and morning tea, please take a look at some of the photos that are further in this Newsletter. We have also been fortunate to have our ekindy teachers and support visiting our school as well. It was great to meet Mrs Denman, and have her in our school for lessons this week. As we head into the assessment heavy part of our term, it is important to remember that every day at school counts. It is really important, at this time of the term, that your students are at school every day to access the support they need to complete assessment. Take a look at the infographic attached to this Newsletter about the relationship between attendance and outcomes! If you know your student will be away, or unexpectedly have an ill student, please make sure you contact the office. You can call the absence line and leave a message at any time. It is also a good time to remind parents that supervision at schools begins at 8:30 with breakfast club. Students should not be on school grounds before this time. If your student is at school earlier than 8:30am, they will need to wait upstairs in the office until teachers begin their duty at 8:30. School Photos Wednesday March 14 Finally, I am looking forward to the first of the sports carnivals of the year. The Swim Carnival is this Friday. Please take a moment to look at the rules and conditions that went home in a letter this week. I can t wait to hear some very loud war cries (the students have been practising in their houses this week) and see some excellent swimmers! 2 Busy Bee Prep News The students have been busy bees so far this term. They are learning so much it is great already to see how far they have come. I am impressed by the way the students are developing the skills needed to function in a Prep classroom. I am also enjoying getting to know the parents as we chat about your child. 3 Proston Parents & Citizens Association P&C meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month during the school term at 3:15pm at the school library. Bring your ideas, skills and time to help raise money for our children. All parents and community members are welcome. Karen Fisher P&C President P & C Easter Raffle Donations Please Donations of Easter & Holiday related items are welcome and they may be left at the school office. Please have them in by the 9 th of March. Suggestions include chocolates, lollies, craft items and colouring-in items. Tickets will be sent home and available at office and around town. The raffle will be drawn at the last parade of term Bully Zero Workshop Last Monday, students attended age-appropriate anti-bullying presentations. In the afternoon, around 30 parents turned up for the parent Bully Zero workshop on Monday afternoon. Many thanks to Katie for presenting the workshops, and to all those who attended! If anyone would like further information about anti-bullying strategies, there are a wealth of activities and ideas at

4 Year 1 News Buddy Reading On Friday afternoons the 5/6s and Year 1s join up together to do some buddy reading. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their reading skills, fluency and confidence as they read and share stories with each other. It has been terrific to see the 5/6s step up into to the role of peer mentor and encourage the Year 1s with their reading. Keep up the great work! The Year 1s have also been enjoying learning football skills in the Backyard Football program currently running on Thursdays at school. Mrs Amery Tuckshop Tuckshop will be held on Tuesday & Friday from Week 3. Menus were sent home earlier this term. Please contact the office if you need another menu. School Banking School Banking Day is Thursday. Information leaflets were sent home earlier this week. Contact the school if you did not receive one.

5 Year 5/6 News Hello Everyone, We are now just over halfway through term one and assessment is about to begin. Please make sure your child is at school as assessment will be completed across the next 4 weeks and there is not always time to make up the time if students are away. Year 6 parents - if your child is going on the Canberra trip in July please don't forget there is a meeting for all parents on Monday 5th March at 3.15pm in the 5/6 classroom. Mrs Stacy Love Year 3/4 News The class has been having a wonderful time exploring our science and technology units; Good to Grow and Repurpose It. The students have created mini gardens to have in the classroom which they have planted with bean seeds. It has been a great learning experience seeing seeds germinate. The class has also made recycled pencil holders for their desks as part of their repurpose unit. We would be grateful for any plastic drink bottle donations as each student has another project to design and create as part of their assessment. The class are also working on our display for the annual Proston Show next week. We look forward to a great day. Mrs Clarke

6 Backyard Rugby League Students from Years 1-6 are participating in the Backyard Rugby League Program over a three week period on Thursdays. The focus of this program is to develop students' skill level, increase participation in local Rugby League and foster a love for the game. Students will also receive a FREE football at the end of the program on March 8 by completing the online registration process in the flyer provided. This year the Wondai Wolves will again be fielding a number of teams in the South Burnett Junior Rugby League Competition. If your child has a passion for Rugby League and would like to join a local team the Wolves would love to have you. On Tuesday March 6, a football clinic for Proston students will be held in Wondai from 4:30 to 5:30 pm. Students who have registered for their free football by this weekend can collect their free football there. 7 PROSTON PA & H SOCIETY PRESENTS PROSTON YOUNG FARMERS CHALLENGE 2018 The Young Farmers Challenge has come a long way since first held in 2009 at the Ekka. Originally designed to showcase the Agricultural knowledge that youth possess, the Challenge is now used as a form of education and entertainment for all children interested. The challenge is comprised of a series of tasks that all members of the team must compete to move on to the next. The relay style race is timed and run in teams of four competitors. This gives teams the opportunity to use all their skills and speed to complete tasks. By no means do competitors have to have an agriculture background. We encourage all backgrounds either city or country to join in on the fun! The total timeframe of a completed challenge is approximately 10 minutes. If teams are at all penalised for cheating, failing to complete a task etc seconds will be added to their run times. For the purpose of fun, the challenges will not be released before Friday 9 th of March. Entry to the challenge is free, all you have to bring is a sense of adventure and team spirit! The 2017 Proston Young Farmers Challenge saw over 15 teams participate! But will the reigning Champions the Blanch Family win for a second year? Ribbons will be given to all competitors who place 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd. There are prizes all through the afternoon for participation for all attending. This year the Challenge will be held on the Friday 9th March before the Show. As there are so many junior and school cattle teams that were unable to attend the 2017 challenge due to travel, the decision to change was made. We hope that this decision does not cause too much turmoil for your households. Please keep your Friday Gate Passes as they are Valid for the entire show! Sideshow alley will be available as well as canteen facilities for food purchases. For the younger and more animal inclined aggies, Viv s Farmyard will be open for petting and bottle feeding. PRIZES: First, Second and Third placed ribbons for the fastest three teams! Best dressed team Best themed team Most Sportsman team And more!! 10 Leader Investiture At our recent investiture, our school captains, sports captains and student council members were presented with their certificates and badges. Thank you to Councillor Kathy Duff for attending and presenting at the ceremony.

11 Proston Swimming Pool Aqua Aerobics Aqua Aerobics will be held at 3.45pm on Wednesdays, starting on February 7. Operation Hours: Mon Fri: 6-8am & 3-6pm Sat/Sun/Holidays: 1-5pm P: or School Photos School Photos will be taken on March 14. Envelopes and information will be sent home soon.

12 Students of the Week Swimming This Friday the 2 nd of March is the Proston State School Swimming Carnival. Students are expected to meet at school by no later than 8:45am for parade, and will head over to the pool in their respective houses for a 9:00am start. The school will be selling barbeque food and drinks from 10am, inviting students to purchase food at the carnival or bring their own lunch. I look forward to seeing the Stuart Red Backs and Boyne Bulldogs in all their red & blue glory, for a fabulous day at the pool. In other swimming news, Iutin, Brooke, Mersadeez and Chloe competed at the SB Trials last week. They won the Aggregate Trophy for Proston. They competed well and received several placings. Mr Amery
