1 NEWSLETTER EXCITING THINGS ARE HAPPENING IN THE LODGE! We now have three families with new babies! There s something about seeing the next generation that gives you real optimism about the future.of the world in general and the Lodge in particular. Left:Baby Ava Mckenzie Karlsson, weighing 10 lbs, 6 oz, was born to proud parents Jacob and Kendall Karlsson on July 31. Below: Baby Victoria Vivian Bosavage, 5 lbs, 15 oz, was born to proud parents Julie Olson and husband Eric Bosavage on October of 7
2 Baby Aurora was born in early 2017 to members Sabrina Gren and husband Daniel Lopez-Bonaglia who joined the Lodge earlier this year. Aurora has already come to three meetings!. We heartily celebrate all of them and look forward to noisier events. THE BAZAAR IS UPON US! 38th Annual Drott Lodge Swedish Bazaar, November 4, 11 am - 2:30 pm, St. James Episcopal Church, Seven Locks Rd., Potomac, MD It s not too late to volunteer for a shift. Help make this year s Bazaar fun and enjoyable for our members as well as our customers. 3 Bazaar at the House of Sweden, Saturday, December 2, House of Sweden, 2900 K St., NW, Washington, DC Again this year, Drott will have multiple tables selling both imported food and imported gifts at this well-attended Washington event. We will need volunteers to staff the tables. This event not only contributes to our bottom line, it is also an effective way to advertise Drott Lodge s presence in the Washington area. Contact Joann Moretti at (301) , joannmoretti@hotmail.com or Gerry Schueman (703) , gerry@schueman.com.to let them know you can be there. SAVE THE DATE: December 10 Drott Lodge St. Lucia Pageant and Jul Fest, Sunday, December 10, 3:00 pm, St. James Episcopal Church Sanctuary, Seven Locks Rd., Potomac, MD Come join us for our annual Lucia Pageant followed by a festive holiday party that includes dancing around the Christmas tree, Julbord, craft activities for children, and a visit from the famous Jultomten with his bag of gifts for the young ones. We ask that members who have children or grandchildren interested in being part of this wonderful celebration contact Carol Whitley at carol4600@verizon.net or by Monday, December 4 to register the children. Our Lodge s holiday adult choir will again be performing during the festivities and welcomes any members or family members who would like to join us! Songs will be performed in Swedish and English and the lyrics can be provided via before the rehearsal. Page 3 of 7
4 Lori Anne Shoemaker, granddaughter of Margaret and Gerry Schueman, will be our Lucia this year. Lori Anne is in her freshman year at Osbourn Park High School (OPHS) in Manassas, VA. She was accepted into the two-year specialty program called The Pre-Governor's OPHS. Upon acceptance into The Governor's Innovation Park, at the Manassas Campus of George Mason University, she will be dualenrolled in college-level and high-school classes during her junior and senior years at OPHS. She is currently pursuing math, chemistry and physics as part of the STEM program. Page 4 of 7
5 RECENT EVENTS Our October meeting featured a discussion of Iceland from the perspective of Drott members Larilyn André, who visited in September, and Keith, Katrin, and Kevin Shoemaker who visited during the summer. Larilyn found that sometimes the Icelanders combined design and humor to trick you into confusing art with reality. It certainly brightens the long winter! "Golden Falls, is one of Iceland s many river, falls and gorge systems. There had been some discussion about harnessing the power, but a young girl walked to Reykjavik and told the government she would throw herself over the falls if they built a power plant. The idea was scrapped. Page 5 of 7
