2 Nebraska Season Preview The Nebraska swimming and diving squad dives into the uncharted waters of the Big Ten for the first time in school history. The Huskers finished their involvement with the Big 12 in June, and the season marks the first in the Big Ten. Nebraska returns five seniors from last season s squad, including Bobbi Balogh, Mailene Leslie, D Arcy Schmidt, Riley Seidel and Caroline Shea. The senior class combined for 34 top-five finishes in , including three victories. Bobbi Balogh (pronounced BAY-log) plans to finish strong for the Huskers during her senior season. Balogh looks for continued improvement in the 500 freestyle after setting her personal-best time (5:14.62) at the Balogh blew through the pool in the 400 IM, clocking a 4:48.03 to finish 24th. She added a personal best at the Missouri Invitational in December, swimming the 1,650 freestyle in 18: The Lincoln Southeast graduate was also a standout in the classroom, capturing first-team academic All-Big 12 accolades as well as spots on the Big 12 Commissioner s Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters of Leslie enters her final year as a Husker looking to continue the gains she displayed in After contributing seven top-five finishes and taking 19th in the 1,650 free at the 2011, Leslie will be a big part of the Huskers freestyle and IM corps. The native of Corvallis, Ore., also performed well in the classroom, claiming secondteam academic All-Big 12 accolades and spots on the Big 12 Commissioner s Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters of Schmidt returns as Nebraska s most experienced diver hoping to leave a lasting impression on her teammates. The senior from Scottsdale, Ariz., finished among the top three divers three times as a junior, and was able to provide guidance to the younger divers as the program s veteran. Seidel (pronounced SY-del) is coming into her senior year riding a wave of momentum. She set three personal-best times at the 2011 Big 12 Championships for the second year in a row and plans on more improvement throughout her final season at Nebraska. Seidel added a victory in the 1,000 free against UNO, while adding a second-place showing in the 500 free against the Mavericks. The La Crosse, Wis., native, also earned spots on the Big 12 Commissioner s Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters of Seidel will continue to be a valuable member of the freestyle and IM corps. Shea returns to the Huskers for her final season hoping to continue to build on the momentum of her first three seasons. Shea earned 17 top-five finishes during her junior campaign. Seven of Shea s 17 topfive finishes were in the 200 freestyle, an event that she will be a big part of this season. She owns the top returning time in the 200-freestyle at 1: The freestyle/backstroke specialist earned a second-place finish against UNO in the 100-yard free. She also set a career-best time in the 500 free at the 2011 Big 12 Championships, where she claimed a 22nd-place finish. In the classroom, Shea earned second-team academic All-Big 12 honors and a nod on the 2011 Big 12 Commissioner s Spring Honor Roll. This year s senior class is replacing a larger class from with seven departed seniors, including Claire Desormey, Julie Giehl, Kelsey Grushecky, Blaine Hoppenrath, Brandie Kavalec, Meredith Matthies and Rachell McClain. During last year s campaign, that group totaled 77 top-five finishes, including 10 event wins. It will be difficult to replace the production of s senior class, but it is a challenge that this group of seniors has accepted and strive to accomplish. Following the seniors, the highly-talented junior class is comprised of nine swimmers and divers who compiled 119 top-five finishes in Kailey Creek, Ellan Dufour, Amy Herman, Hayley Martin, Alyson Ramsey, Ashley Reiter, Kaitlan Walker, Ariel Weech and Sara Weinberg make up the talented junior class that hopes to help elevate Nebraska in the Big Ten for the next two seasons. Ellan Dufour returns for her junior season, owning two of s top-returning times in each the 100- and 200-yard backstroke (55.08, 2:01.08). After amassing 36 top-five finishes in her first two seasons at Nebraska, Dufour will be looking for more in Dufour has been a force in the 100 and 200 backstroke at the conference level her first two seasons, posting four top-15 finishes at the Big 12 meet as a freshman and sophomore. Weech also owns two top returning times in the 50- and the 100-yard freestyle. Weech will continue to push the freestyle corps in after a successful sophomore season. TBA HUskers.com 27 A Look at the Huskers Letterwinners Returning: 22 Newcomers: Big 12 Championship Top-24 Returning Swimmers: First Place Finishers Returning: Returning Academic All-Big 12 Selections: 10 in NU history in the 50-yard freestyle with a personalbest to finish ninth at the. She set two other personal best times at the Big 12 Championships in the 100-yard freestyle in and the 100-yard backstroke at She was also part of three relay squads that earned spots among the topfive relay finishes in history (200- and 400-medley, 400 freestyle). The 200-yard medley relay team swam the fastest relay in school history (1:41.08) with Weech as the anchor leg. Weech will continue as a go-to freestyle performer for the Huskers as a junior. Three other juniors own a top returning performance in an event, including Herman (Platform, ), Larson (200 IM, 2:04.97) and Martin (200 Freestyle, 1:49.43). Morgan Flannigan, Ashleigh Grammar, Shannon Guy, Payton Michaud, Bailey Pons, Mary Beth Rye, Kristin Strecker and Megan Ziemann enter their second seasons of collegiate swimming. The talented sophomores swam well in their freshman campaigns, tallying 90 top-five finishes on the year. That number looks to improve this year with the addition of UNO transfer Mary Beth Rye. Pons opened the most eyes during her freshman year, earning the fastest times of the year in three events (500 freestyle: 4:49.05, 1,000 freestyle: 10:12.69, 1,650 freestyle: 16:38.14). Pons dominated, capturing more than 20 top-five finishes to lead the team in Pons also exploded for a team-best 13 victories on the year. Pons tied with Kelsey Grushecky for the best individual finish by a Husker swimmer at the, finishing sixth in the 1,650 freestyle. In Pons debut season in , she immediately jumped into the NU record books and hopes to continue climbing the Husker charts in her second season, while helping Nebraska transition into the Big Ten Conference. Michaud also returns to the Huskers owning two of the three top-returning dives from (One meter: Three meter: ). Michaud immediately became one of NU s most successful divers in her freshman season. The Lincoln, Neb., native claimed Nebraska highest individual finish at the 2011 with a fifth-place performance in the one-meter diving competition. She earned multiple wins in both the one- and three-meter dives as a true freshman and looks to continue her development as a sophomore in Nebraska has added seven promising freshmen who will debut in their first seasons against Big Ten competition. The freshman class includes multiple swimmers who have competed on national teams and won numerous state high school swimming championships. The Huskers open their inaugural Big Ten schedule with the annual Scarlet v. Cream Intrasquad meet on Sept. 30 at the Devaney Natatorium. The annual intrasquad event will be followed by the annual Alumni Meet on Oct. 8. The Huskers open the regular season by taking on South Dakota State in their first official dual as members of the Big Ten on Oct. 22. The Huskers defeated the Jackrabbits last season, The squad will travel to the Rice Invitational on on Oct. 28 in Houston, Texas. Nebraska will enter their first Big Ten Conference competition on Nov. 11 as the divers head to Minneapolis to take part in the Minnesota Invitational. In addition to the season-opening dual with South Dakota State, Nebraska will face several other familiar foes this season, including UNO, Kansas, Illinois and Iowa State. The Huskers faced all five of those teams a year ago, posting a 3-2 against the group, with wins over SDSU, UNO and Iowa State. The swimmers will also compete in an invitational at new Big Ten brethren Northwestern in Evanston, Ill., Nov. 18. The Husker divers will follow with a trip to Iowa City for the Iowa Invitational on Dec.2. That event will give the Huskers an early look at the well used for the 2012 Big Ten Championships. Nebraska will make its inaugural Big Ten Championship appearance back in Iowa City at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, Feb All 12 members of the Big Ten Conference sponsor a women s swimming and diving team, which will provide a much deeper field of competition than the six-team field in the Big 12 the Huskers have competed against since Indiana claimed the 2011 Big Ten crown, while Minnesota took runner-up honors. Ohio State finished third and Penn State claimed fourth place. I think we all realize it is more than the sum of success of one individual. We want to bond as a team and be firing on all cylinders. If we can do that, our expectations are quite high. She established a personal best in the 100-yard freestyle, 400-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle. Her top performances in the 100 free and 400 IM came at the Balogh notched the fifthbest time on the team in the 1,650 freestyle (Freshman) Balogh produced a solid freshman campaign for NU, competing well and improving throughout the season in the distance freestyle and individual medley events. Balogh s best meet came against Nebraska- Omaha, when she finished second in the 1,000-yard freestyle and third in the 500-yard freestyle to help the Huskers to a victory. Balogh finished the season by setting four career-best times at the Big 12 Championships, including a 19th-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Balogh was a first-team all-state and all-conference selection four times, including three seasons at Monroe High School in Monroe, Mich., and one season at Lincoln Southeast High School. Balogh was also part of Monroe s All-American 4x100 freestyle relay team. She had five top-eight finishes at the state meet throughout her career. Balogh graduated from Southeast with a perfect 4.0 GPA, was in the top three percent of her class, and was a member of the National Honor Society. Bobbi was born on July 10, 1990, in Wayne, Mich. She is the daughter of Louie and Norma Balogh, and has two sisters, Brooke and Blake, and three brothers, Brad, Brennan and Bennett. Bobbi is majoring in biological systems engineering, and earned academic All-Big 12 accolades in 2010 and Balogh is also a six-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner s Honor Roll. Leslie set season-best times in the 200-, 500- and 1,650-yard freestyles at the The native of Corvallis, Ore., also performed well in the classroom, claiming second-team academic All-Big 12 accolades and spots on the Big 12 Commissioner s Fall and Spring Honor Roll (Sophomore) Leslie followed up her sensational freshman year with a solid sophomore showing. She produced 11 top-five finishes, including an event title in the 1,000-yard freestyle against South Dakota. Her 11 top-five finishes came in five different events, making Leslie a valuable asset in the freestyle and individual medley events. She also set a personal best in the 400 IM at the Missouri Invite with a time of 4: Leslie ranked among NU s top five in four events on the performance list. Leslie made the Big 12 Commissioner s Fall Honor Roll (Freshman) Leslie ended her freshman year with seven top-five finishes in Nebraska s final four dual meets. She added three career-best times at the 2009 Big 12 Championships, including an 11th-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Leslie produced 11 top-five finishes on the year, including a season-best secondplace showing in the 200 free against South Dakota State. Leslie was among the top five on Nebraska s performance list in four events, including the team s second-fastest time in both the 1,000- and 1,650-yard freestyle races. Leslie was also selected to the Big 12 Commissioner s Honor Roll both semesters of her freshman year. Leslie attended Crescent Valley High School in Corvallis, Ore., where she helped lead the team to back-to-back Class 5A state titles in 2007 and She was named team MVP both years. Leslie was part of the 6A staterecord 400 freestyle relay team, and set the 5A record in the 500 freestyle. She won the state title in the 200 freestyle in 2007 and the 500 freestyle in both 2007 and Leslie was a member of the National Honor Society and a Scholastic All-American in high school. Mailene was born on June 30, 1990, in Corvallis, Ore. She is the daughter of Tim and Susie Leslie and has one sister, Caitlin. A business administration major at Nebraska, Mailene earned second-team academic All-Big 12 honors in 2011, and is a five-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner s Honor Roll. (Arcadia) As Nebraska s most experienced diver, D Arcy Schmidt returns for her final season, hoping to leave a lasting impression on her teammates. During her junior season, Schmidt tallied three top-five finishes and set a personal-best against UNO in the one-meter dive (273.00) (Junior) Schmidt set a career best against UNO in the onemeter dive with her score of The junior from Scottsdale, Ariz., finished among the top three divers three times during the season and was able to provide guidance to the younger divers as the program s veteran (Sophomore) Schmidt competed well in all three diving events throughout the course of her sophomore season. She registered 11 top-five finishes, including four first-place showings and three second-place finishes. Schmidt shined in the one-meter and three-meter dives, finishing with two victories in each event. Schmidt also set personal bests in each of her three events, with season-best point totals of in the one meter, in the three meter and in the platform dive. She was able to compete in Nebraska s final five meets of the year, and showed no ill effects from the injury that kept her out of competition. She was one of Nebraska s top divers, earning four third-place finishes in the team s final three dual meets. Schmidt earned a 16thplace finish on the three-meter board at the 2009 Big 12 Championships, and was the only NU diver to travel to the NCAA Zone Diving meet in Columbia, Mo., where she finished 20th on the three-meter board. Schmidt was an All-American at Arcadia High School in Scottsdale, Ariz. She was a four-time state diving champ and three-time Class 4A Diver of the Year. Schmidt also swam the 50 freestyle in high school, and in 2008 finished second in the state in the event. A first-team all-state and all-conference selection, Schmidt was named Class 4A Athlete of the Year, and also set the 4A state diving record. Schmidt was a multisport athlete in high school, as was a three-time state qualifier in cross country in addition to her swimming and diving accolades. D Arcy was born on March 28, 1990, in Honolulu, Hawaii, and is the daughter of Phillip Schmidt and Heidi Stone. D Arcy has one sister, Rory, who swam for the University of Virginia, and one brother, Gunnar, who swims at the University of Michigan. D Arcy is an art major at Nebraska. Shea earned 17 top-five finishes during her junior campaign. Seven of Shea s 17 top-five finishes were in the 200 freestyle, an event that she will be a big part of this season (Junior) Shea continued to improve by capturing 17 top-five finishes as a junior to increase her career total to 41 as a Husker. The freestyle/backstroke specialist earned a second-place finish against UNO in the 100-yard free. She also set a career-best time in the 500 free at the 2011, where she claimed a 22nd-place finish. In the classroom, Shea earned second-team academic All-Big 12 honors and a nod on the 2011 Big 12 Commissioner s Spring Honor Roll (Sophomore) Shea produced 14 top-five finishes as a sophomore, and established a trio of personal-best times in the 100-, 200- and 500-yard freestyles. Shea notched Nebraska s best time in the 200-yard free on the season, and added top-five times for the Huskers in both the 500 free and 1,000 free (Freshman) Shea put together an outstanding freshman season, as she earned 10 top-five finishes on the year, including three first-place showings. Shea set two career-best times at the 2009, when she finished 16th in the 200 back. She was among the top five on NU s performance list in three different events. (Lincoln Northeast) Katie Davis joins the Nebraska swimming squad after swimming for two seasons for the Arkansas Razorbacks. Davis took a year off before returning to the pool for Nebraska and looks to add depth to the backstroke and IM corps for the Huskers (Freshman, sophomore) Davis swam for the University of Arkansas before transferring to the University of Nebraska. At Arkansas, Davis posted nine top-five finishes, eight of them in the backstroke events. Her best times in the 100 back and 200 back came in the second half of the season in a competition against Kentucky and Missouri and at the Southeastern Conference Championships, respectively. She produced the second most top-five finishes (22) for the Huskers in Dufour also marked her place in Husker history with the second-fastest 100-yard backstroke in school history (55.08). The Medicine Hat, Alberta native also helped the 200- and 400-yard medley relay teams to the record books, including the fastest 200-medley relay time in school history (1:41.08), along with teammates Shannon Guy, Kelsey Grushecky and Ariel Weech. Dufour earned a spot on the 2011 Big 12 Commissioner's Spring Honor Roll. Dufour produced an impressive freshman season at Nebraska. Herman finished 15th or better in every competition during the season, including second-place showings in the one-meter and three-meter dive events. The Lincoln Southwest graduate set two career-best scores on the year, including in the one meter and on the platform. She was a first-team all-state honoree six times and was named Senior Athlete of the Year as well as a Scholastic All- American. The Lincoln, Neb., native claimed Nebraska s highest individual finish at the 2011 Big 12 Championships with a fifth-place performance in the one-meter diving competition. Michaud earned multiple wins in both the one- and three-meter dives as a true freshman and looks to continue her development as a sophomore in (Freshman) Michaud stepped in and immediately became one of Nebraska s go-to divers during her freshman season. On the year, she captured 15 top-five finishes, including five victories. Rye looks to swim in the middle- to long-distance freestyle events at NU. She hopes to contribute immediately after transferring from Nebraska-Omaha following her freshman season (Freshman) Rye particpated in her freshman season at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. She earned a letter at UNO during a season in which she contributed to the team s sprint corps. Rye tallied a third-place finish in the 1,000-freestyle against Nebraska. The daughter of Matt and Debby Rye, Mary Beth was born on Oct. 10, Mary Beth has two brothers, Seth and Jon, and one sister, Anne Marie. Mary Beth s father, Matt, was a three-time letterwinner as a member of the Nebraska men s swimming and diving. Land won seven state titles during her junior and senior season. She claimed back-toback championships in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke in 2010 and 2011, while swimming a leg of a back-to-back state title winning 200 freestyle relay both seasons.
