Tuesday, October 9,1990 Vol. 8, No. 7 Aborton debate contnues: Local pro-lfers confront Wattleton ByCURTW.OLSON News Edtor Planned Parenthood Presdent Faye Wattleton addressed a splt, but pro-aborton, heavy, capacty crowd n Randolph-Macon Women's College (R-MWC) Smth Hall Wednesday nght on ssues "dat threaten the very exstence of Amerca as we know and love (t)." The speech, the frst n a seres of lectures sponsored by R-MWC for the academc year, was followed by a 30- to45-mnute questonand-answer sesson. The speech was attended by a group of more than 200 students and faculty from Lberty Unversty and protested by more than 30 local Chrstan Acton Councl members. Wattleton opened her remarks: " am grateful for the opportunty to be n Falwell country." That remark brought a resoundng response from the LU contngency and the other prolfers on hand. She proceeded, however, to say, "Despte the Falwell supporters n the audence, Lynchburg s stll pro-choce." The supporters of Wattleton erupted n applause. Wattleton expressed her concerns regardng recent changes n the makeup of the Unted States Supreme Court. She began by sayng that even before Roe v. Wade, the Consttuton protected rghts of prvacy and the decson whether or not to procreate. Watdeton stated, however, "There are some who say that s not true, and that we must go back to (George) and (Thomas) Jefferson to see how they thought." Wattleton exclamed, "Well, because owned slaves and Jefferson's wfe could not vote, am just smply unwllng to go back!" The Supreme Court has receved what has been perceved as a conservatve facelft n recent years, and Wattleton beleves the recent confrmaton of Justce Davd Souter to the land's hghest court wll contnue the trend. She stated that Souter, durng hs confrmaton hearng, "sad a lot about a lot of thngs but refused to answer questons on thngs that are pretty fundamental. "Ths (queston)," she sad, "s whether the Consttuton protects our most prvate rghts to decde for ourselves f we wll and when we wll procreate. "t s very dstressng to me," she contnued, "that a justce jonng de court, whocannotsaythatawomen's body deserves the protecton of the Consttuton, wll be rulng on matters that drectly affect the future of a woman's lfe." She expanded her remarks by tacklng the Supreme Court's 1989 Webster case whch granted states' rghts n lmtng abortons. Watdeton sad, however, "One thousand Webster's handed down every July 3 of every year wll not stop women from havng abortons, even f t klls us." Furthermore, she expressed her dsgust wth the June 1990 Supreme Court case whch ruled that teenagers had to notfy der parents or a judge had to notfy the teenager's parents before the teenager could get Shaw: Wattleton remarks dstort aborton pcture By DOUGLAS R. DEMPSEY Campus News Edtor Kady Shaw, presdent of the Lynchburg chapter of de Vrgna Socety for Lfe, offered a rebuttal Thursday at Randolph-Macon's Woman College to Planned Parendood Presdent Faye Watdeton's Wednesday speech. Shaw's presentauon was closed to the publc, but granted an ntervew after her remarks. She sad she receved a warm recepton and felt free to express her pro-lfe vewpont: " felt very free to express my vews, even though dey dffered from de majortyopnon. The quesdons asked were very educated." Shaw sad dal although a group called Frends of Planned Parendood s formng n Lynchburg, she sn't postve dal an aborton clnc wll open soon: " suspect that (the aborton clnc) s der ultmate goal, but don't know for sure." Lynchburg s a conservatve town, and most ctzens would call themselves pro-lfe, Shaw sad. "Poll after poll ndcates that most Amercans support restrctons on aborton," she sad. Shaw sad the speech by Wattleton gave a dstorted pcture of aborton: "t (de speech) wasn't a far presentaton. " don't thnk Faye (Watdeton) was drect. She ddn't gve any nformaton. She'sgood at exctng people about rghts and avodng de real ssue." Dr. Norman Gesler, dean of Lberty Unversty' s Center for Research and Scholarshp, agreed wth Shaw's assessment. "The real ssue never came out (n Watdeton's speech). The real ssue s prvacy vs. rght to lfe. Of course nobody has de rght to prvately kll, and dal's the real ssue." The confrmaton of Judge Davd Souter for the Supreme Court, whch was vehemendy opposed by Planned Parenthood, remans a mystery to Shaw. "As ctzens we have the rght to voce our opnons, but when t comes to a judge the questons should be on how he wll nterpret the consttuton," Shaw sad, " hope he (Souter) s pro-lfe." Gesler sad that Watdeton, who attacked Souter's nomnaton, has every rght to be Les Saker from LU's Lberators for Lfe was one of the more than 30 pro-lfers protestng Faye Wattleton's address at Randolph-Macon Women's College last Wednesday nght. photo by Bruce Herwg an aborton. Wattleton retorted, "Untl the day when young people have to go to ther parents to ask ther permsson to have sexual ntercourse, thnk we need to keep de government out (of ther lves)." Wattleton mentoned her 15-ycarold daughter, Felca, at varous tmes durng her speech. Wattleton stated she has fath n hcrdaughter to make decsons that arc n her (Felca's) best nterest. Wattleton stated: "f she makes a mstake, don't want her to suffer for de rest of her lfe the upset wth the new justce's confrmaton. "They (Planned Parendood) have every reason to attack Souter because he s a conservatve and he beleves n nter- Faye Wattleton pretng de consttuton the way t's wrtten." BLOYE Edtor The Persan Gulf crss may put the Lynchburg school system almost $100,000 over budget ths year, actng Lynchburg Cty School Superntendent Dr. Ernest Martn sad durng the cty school board meetng last Tuesday. Heatng ol, whch was budgeted at 70 cents a gallon before the school year began, now costs de cty $1.07 per gallon, an unexpected ncrease of 52 percent, due to de crss n de Persan Gulf regon. Whle the school board cannot reduce de usage of heatng ol, Martn sad dat several cutbacks must be made regardng automoble usage wdn the school system. "We have a major problem on our hands, and unfortunately, some cutbacks must be made," Martn sad. "We wll have to greatly reduce de number of feld trps and actvty runs that are normally taken. Also, we wll probably elmnate many of the bus runs that aren't fully loaded." Whle the proposed cuts are expected to lessen de projected budget defct, Martn sad dal de varables affected make up only 7 percent of the yearly fuel and ol budget. n other school board news: * Martn reported that, as of Oct. 1, a total of 9,318 students are currently enrolled n the Lynchburg school system, only two students less dan last year's Oct. 1 fgure of 9,320. 'Ths year's enrollment s 10 more students dan we projected," Martn sad. "Ths s very postve news and we expect de trend to contnue to turn up." * Three gudance counselors from dfferent area schools presented a postve report on de new K-12 gudance/counselng program recently mplemented. The mproved program, explaned n detal by elementary counselor Pam Smth-Johnson, was desgned to put more emphass on the counselng and gudance of students at the elementary school level. "A troubled and confused chld wll probably develop nto a very poor learner," Johnson sad. "We want to betereto encourage them and show them how to make de approprate knds of decsons." Johnson reported that de gudance counselors for the mproved K-12 program spend 60 percent of ther tme counselng students and 40 percent for gudance purposes. The counselng porton of de program nvolves helpng young chldren deal wd any personal, socal or academc problems dal they mght ncur. The gudance part of the program manly focuses on makng chldren aware of de varety of occupatons avalable. * Because of a school board retreat scheduled for Oct , the Lynchburg School Board wll not hold ts regularly scheduled Tuesday nght meetng Oct. 16. nstead, the next school board meetng wll be held Oct. 30 at 5:30 p.m., Charman Wllam Long announced. DEMPSEY Campus News Edtor The Mss Lberty pageant, anlu tradton snce 1972, has been canceled ths year and replaced wt a specal event durng chapel, accordng to Vernon Brewer, vce presdent of student development. The present fnancal condton of the unversty necesstated a change n format. "We don't have a major corporate sponsor, and the pageant s a costly event," Brewer sad.'tcket sales only cover about one-fft of de cost. just couldn't see spendng an excessve amount of money on a pageant when people (n the mnstry) are losng ther jobs." Brewer met wd Student Government Assocaton Presdent Paul Davs, as well as people from student development. Everybody agreed on de change, and a recommendaton to drop the pageant was sent to the admnstraton. nstead of a specal pageant, Mss Lberty wll be chosen durng chapel Oct. 26. The 24 contestants wll be ntroduced, and de fve fnalsts selected. Then the student body wll vote, and the new Mss Lberty wll be chosen. The dentty of the wnner, however, wll be kept secret untl halftme of the homecomng football game, Brewer sad. At dat tme de contestants wll agan be ntroduced, and the new Mss Lberty wll be crowned. Several alternatves to cancelng the pageant were consdered, but none seemed approprate. " am dsapponted about the cancellaton, but would not want to put on a pageant dat was second-rate or do somethng that would embarrass the young lades (n de pageant)," Brewer sad. The contestants n the pageant were told of de cancellaton Oct. 1 and reacted n a very postve manner. "Ther response to de stuaton was total cooperaton and understandng," Brewer sad. "They exhbted to me that they all have the atttude and sprt of Mss Lberty." Despte de cancellaton, Hcks and Cohagcn, de comedy team that was to host the pageant, wll stll be performng on campus Oct. 26. Cornthans 3:17 Product boycott to lower televson sex, volence rates Too often Chrstans st around safely locked up n ther comfortable vory towers and complan about the horrble condton of the world. Unfortunately, ths practce does absolutely nothng to change the depraved condtons wth whch we lve, drectly or ndrectly, everyday. We complan that "evl s overtakng the world" and "sn't t horrble out there" and "there s so much sex and volence on TV," but what do we do to make a change n the stuaton? How often do we take steps to reverse the current sn, sex and volence trap n whch televson programs appear to be mred? Do we ever do anythng except complan to our neghbors n our ktchens over cups of tea or talk about the good old days when we smply ddn't have these problems? Do we really expect that our empty words wll ever have any knd of mpact f we do nothng? Are we not called to be stewards of our world and ts moral condton just as we called to be good stewards of our fnances? Many argue that they would love to get nvolved, but they smply don't have the tme. Others say that they have no dea what course of acton to take and, even f they dd, one person s totally mpotent to make any worthwhle changes n a problem as large as the content of televson programs. t s tme we recognzed these so-called arguments for what they are: a complete lack of concern for the state of our world. Yes, we say we are appalled; but f we were truly dsgusted, we would not reman slent. Now s the tme for acton, and fortunately, the Amercan Famly Assocaton has a plan of acton whch promses to be both easy and effectve n reducng the amount of sex, volence and profanty on televson. Research studes conducted by the AFA ndcate that Burger Kng helped sponsor almost 19 ncdents of sex, volence, profanty or ant-chrstan bgotry wth each of ther 30-second commercals durng the perod of Aprl 26 - M.a.y 23. Ths total was approxmately two-thrds more than the average sponsorshp for other advertsers. *" Pror to the selected montorng perod, AFA contacted Chrm. an Martn of Burger Kng's parent company by mal nformng hm of ts ntentons to montor the content of programs sponsored by varous corporatons' advertsng dollars. When he dd not respond, AFA contacted Martn two more tmes by mal askng that f he shared ther concern, he would not help to sponsor programs wth hgh levels of sex, volence, and profanty. Spokesmen further nformed hm of the organzaton's ntentons to ask for a one-year boycott of the leadng sponsor's products. Agan, Martn gnored The AFA's letters. n a last attempt to alter Burger Kng's sponsorshp habts, the AFA notfed Martn one more tme, presented ts fndngs and nformed hm that unless Burger Kng's choce of program support changed, hs company was beng consdered for a boycott. When he dd not respond, the AFA made one fnal plea for change and faxed Martn a copy of the potental boycott letter. He stll dd not respond. Therefore, the Amercan Famly Assocaton n coalton wth Chrstan Leaders for Responsble Televson (CLeaR- TV) s askng the Amercan publc to boycott Burger Kng untl Sept At ths pont, many may be prompted to ask whether boycottng really works. Just one example of the power of boycottng can be see n the results the AFA acheved n the Mennon/Clorox boycott of last summer. These two companes were leadng sponsors of programs wth questonable content. As a drect result of the boycott, both companes lost money, and ncdents of sex, volence and profanty on prmetme network televson dropped by 32 percent. Yes, boycottng works. Let us all act on ths opportunty to take back control of televson content. One person can have a powerful voce and as a group we can make a defnte dfference. Boycott Burger Kng products, and let companes know that Chrstans have left the securty of ther vory towers and are ready to fght. Although t s defntely not an easy queston wth a cut-and-dry answer, many experts would agree that the more powerful of the two nfluences s advertsers. Advertsers strve to buld an mage for themselves. Once that mage s establshed, companes wll follow any avenue possble to uphold that mage. Ths ncludes the sponsorshp of programs whch have questonable language or content. n an artcle ttled "What's on Tonght? An Advertser's Dlemma" n the Summer 1989 edton of Amercan Advertsng, Davd Hurwtt, vcepresdent of marketng and communcatons for General Foods USA, sad, "We make our expectatons of what s acceptable and unacceptable n programs we sponsor very clear to the networks. The networks know that we do not expect our advertsng to be seen on programs that make gratutous, explotatve or excessve use of sex, volence or controversy." Thus we can conclude that program sponsors and advertsers arc not vctms of the networks. nstead, they can, and do, make decsons regardng the content of the programs they support wth theradvertsngdollars. And these programs often thrve or fal accordngly. Accordng to "Who's watchng What You Watch?" the Summer 1989 Amercan Advertsng cover story, several examples of the advertser's strength n determnng programmng arc as follows: Mcnnen stopped advertsng on Watchng the ads How much attenton TV vewers gve commercals compared wth attenton they gve the programs t's Laughable New courses are proposed to gude msdrected senors nto proper feld One element of college lfe that rks me s the remnant of senors amblng around campus wthout any dea of what ther major should be. How annoyng! Columnst offers words of wsdom to Lberty's couch potato populaton Snce my freshman year at Lberty, have been consstently amazed at the ncreasng number of students who actually lve n the DeMoss lounge area and rrtated by the mpossblty of ever fndng an open couch or space on the "wall." don't know whether or not there was a massve computer exploson durngregstraton, butthese people were obvously neglected n the dorm-assgnng process. These poor wretches of socety are now forced to make the blue couches and brck wall ther makeshft homes whle the rest of us enjoy our comfortable, well-kept abodes. can't help but feel the deepest sorrow n my soul for these helpless outcasts. My heart truly goes out to these unfortunate vctms of gross computer error. Okay, enough of ths sympathy stuff. What's the problem wth these people ( hestate to label them students) who hang out n DeMoss 24 hours a day? These mserably lost souls have elevated the term "couch potato" to magnfcent, new heghts. t truly must be lberatng to possess so much free tme. can only magne the elaton one of the "loungers" feels when he receves hs class schedule and observes to hs delght that hs one class meets n room DL (DeMoss Lounge). Even though they are essentally homeless, a strct dress code s mantaned to establsh a frm bond between the lounge resdents. Because of ths frm cohesveness among the "J.Crew Poster Chldren," those who have jobs, take classes and possess real lves are often looked upon wth suspcon and contempt. As a result the so-called'"normal folks" are unable to reach out and help the "lounger" lead a more meanngful, productve lfe. 5 gage_yrhe^lberty Champon news Tuesday, Obnoxous behavor at R-MWC shames pro-lfe movement By KATHLEEN DONOHUE Feature/Opnon Edtor After attendng Fayc Wattleton's Analyss speech at Randolph-Macon Women's College Wednesday nght, have to admt that was embarrassed and appalled at the behavor whch was dsplayed by much of the pro-lfe secton of the audtorum. (ncdentally, much of ths secton was composed of Lberty students.) Several tmes durng her speech Wattleton had to stop md-sentence n order to ask people to stop shoutng out personal comments or boong, so that she could fnsh. When the queston-and-answer porton of the evenng began, a mld form of chaos broke out. Several students jumped up and down near ther seats vyng for Wattleton's attenton, and one student began shoutng out hs queston even after Ms. Wattleton acknowledged someone else. Furthermore, at one pont, as Wattleton answered the queston of a Randolph-Macon student, (very unsatsfactorly, must admt) jeers and boong erupted from he back of the audtorum. Now, unless the basc rules of etquette have changed drastcally n the last week and no one has gotten around to tellng me, boong s reserved for profcssonal wrestlng, :\ few legtmate sportng events and other base forms of entertanment. To her credt, through all of ths outrageous behavor, Wattleton remaned posed, artculate and kept her sense of humor ntact. t has been sad that those wth nothng to say usually say t the loudest n order to make an mpresson. 'm sure Ms. Wattleton was very mpressed wth our mmaturty and lack of smple manners. Speakng of havng nothng to say, very few of the pro-lfers had very much to say. Some of the questons were excellent and put Wattlcton n an uncomfortable lght untl she managed to talk her way around the real ssue. However, for the most part, the pro-lfe questons wcrcchldsh and uneducated. t was certanly a sad commentary on the fact that we are supposed to be prepared lo have he answers these people need, bn we can'teven take he lme tofndout the facts behnd ther poston. Tell me, how can you urgucagans somethng about whch you know absolutely nothng? The way lo make an mpresson on someone of Wattleton's stature and poston s through ntellgent, pertnent, well-thought-out questons and a sense of professonalsm and maturty. Gve hcrsomcthngo thnk about, not fuel to add to her lre. Although Ms. Wattleton played a good game of semantcs, phraseology, queston-twstng, ssue-dodgng and ad homncm, many excellent opportuntes presented themselves for easy rebuttal. But by then most people were so worked up about he fact that "she had the nerve to stand up there and present aborton as an opton," that they allowed he opportuntes to slp past unchallenged. (However, n all farness, Wattlcton dd avod the back of the audtorum as much as possble when feldng questons.) Let us not forget that we were guests on Randolph-Macon's campus. Famly Outngs s amed at he problems facng the modem famly unt. Benson sad one goal ol the Kngs Players s "gettng back wth the famly unt, the famly core. To be a member of the Kngs Players, a person needs actng ablty, a church background and a pastor's recommendaton. Dr. Earl Mlls, provost of Lberty Unversty, confrmed the cancellaton of the readng days. "The orgnal purpose of the readng days was to regster students for the sprng semester. But at ths pont wc fear wc won't have the personnel and equpment to do lhat. Therefore, wc had to revert back to the old schedule and hold classes on hosc days." Mlls also sad that the days were never scheduled as readng days but as sprng regstraton days only. Mlls sad the announcement was supposed lo have been made, but, for unknown reasons, was not. The ssue of overcrowdng at Davd's Place durng campus moves was addressed n a bll sponsored by Sen. Jeff Douglas and Ben LaFrombos. 7 Page 6, The Lberty Champon Flames Feedback Marvn Hamlett Flames lose shocker, can't afford another loss My feelng followng Lberty's loss to the Delaware State Hornets Saturday nght was hard to descrbe. Maybe t was shock. Maybe t was confuson. Maybe t was just a nghtmare. But thnk "shock" perfectly descrbes what and nearly 4,000 other fans felt (half of the fans left n the fourth wth a 37-9 Flames lead). The Flames domnated the frst three quarters. But the Hornets mraculously scored 29 fourth-quarter ponts to pull out the come-frombehnd wn. don't thnk 've ever seen a game's tde turn so suddenly and so dramatcally. As watched several Flames players kneelng down n obvous angush, also nearly shed a tear. But was too devastated! was speechless! The 4-2 Flames came out fred up, provng they could rebound after last week's loss to the Vllanova. Last week wrote that the Flames could use thatdose of realty (the VU loss) to rebound. But n the strange twsts that football often takes, Lberty fell vctms of crcumstance and some hard luck. The Hornets methodcally chpped away at the score, almost as f the they were tryng to "sneak up" on Lberty wthout lettng the fans or the coachng staff know. At one pont durng an LU lead, a Flames player yelled out to me. 'They (DSC) shouldn't even be on the same feld as us. They're Dvson 3." The most panful aspect of the \\oss was^hav l was ncarty a muavwn stuaton for the No. 13 Flames. They were expected to beat DSC to go 5-1, leavng only Youngstown State and Central Florda as possble losses. Reasonably speakng, expected Lberty to be 9-2 wth a sure bet toward post season play. Saturday, the Flames play ther frst crucal game of the season when they host eghth-ranked YSU. f the Flames can defeat the Penguns, t wll be a huge leap n therghtplayoff drecton. n fact, a vctory over YSU would once agan put the Flames n a prme poston to control ther own destny aganst teams they should be able to beat. But can LU come back after the dsheartenng loss to Delaware State? "Ths team wll ascend over ths loss, and the coaches wll too," coach Sam Rutglano sad. Rutglano surely realzes that wth the DSC loss, the Flames are on the playoff bubble. From here on out, each game s crtcal, and the Flames have somethng to prove. The Flames have really played only two tough teams ths year: Vllanova and Delaware State. Ther vctory over James Madson was truly mpressve, but the queston wll stll be, "Can Lberty wn aganst a real opponent?" Last year Lberty fnshed 7-3, narrowly mssng the playoffs. Those three losses were n the fnal four games. Lberty can ll afford to let hstory repeat tself. Rutglano now faces a task of elmnatng the DSC loss from hs team's mnd. "You don't buld a team by stressng the negatves ofa game," Rutglano sad. "You have to take the effort and buld from good thngs they dd." The Flames dd have a lot of postve ponts n the loss. For one, the offense moved the ball at wll, except n the fourth quarter when LU sat on the ball. Also the defense played well, despte gvng up 38 ponts. After all, 29 of the ponts came when the Flames were n ther fourth-quarter, "let's-prolect-thelead" type of defense. serously doubt f Rutglano wll ever st on a lead agan. The loss to Delaware State stll shocks me. t probably wll for a long tme. 1 just hope the effects wear off quckly for the Flames players. sports Tuesday, Oct. 9,1990 Could we play t agan, Sam? Flames blow 37-9 lead, lose By MARVN HAMLETT Sports Edtor f anythng can go wrong, t wll. Murphy's Law struck Lberty's football team Saturday nght at LU Stadum as the Hornets of Delaware State scored 29 fourth-quarter ponts for a dramatc come-from-behnd wn over the 13th-ranked Flames. "You have to gve Delaware State credt," coach Sam Rutglano sad. "They ddn't gve up, and they got a lot of breaks (penaltes)." DSC kcker Matt Stehman, who had problems throughout the game, naled a 45-yard feld goal wth 15 seconds left for the game wnner, but the comeback had begun long before then. Lberty, 4-2, led 37-9 n the fourth quarter and appeared to be on ts way to an easy wn. But DSC would not qut. LU specal teamer and cornerback Wesley McConnell blocked a punt n the end zone and Shclton Lews fell on t for the LU touchdown, the turnng pont came. The ensung extra-pont attempt faled because of a bad snap. The Flames led 37-9, and t would be ther last score of the game. The Hornets then drove 78 yards n 14 plays for a touchdown. Lberty then began a conservatve type of offense that would play rght nto the Hornet's game and rght to LU's downfall. After a John Vnes punt DSC began ts next drve. Helped by an LU defensve holdng penalty on thrd-and-14, the Hornets agan drove 78 yards for another TD. But agan they faled to score the extra pont because LU blocked t, resultng n a Flames lead wth 5:52 left. Three plays later, Vnes kcked a 13-yard punt, and DSC began t's thrd drve of the quarter. The Hornets wasted no tme gong 40 yards n fve plays for another touchdown. Ths tme, DSC went for the two-pont converson, but LU snubbed the attempt for a lead wth three mnutes remanng. After two runs up the mddle and a Seven n a row! Justno had three productve quarters, t was a crucal fourth quarter that allowed the Hornets to wn. photo by Jeffrey A. cot. shortpass, Vnes unleashed a 39-yard punt gvng the Hornets the ball at md-feld. DSC proceeded to drve, clmaxng n a 32-yard TD pass from QB Curts Wllams. Ths tme, however, the two-pont converson was good, narrowng LU's lead to wth just 33 seconds remanng. Stehman then kcked a perfect onsde-kck. The Hornets recovered at md-feld wth 30 seconds left. Wllams' frst play resulted n a 22- yard Hornets completon to Davd Jones (11 receptons, 198 yards). After two ncompletons, Stehman kcked the game-wnnng feld goal. "He's really a good kcker," Hornets head coach Bll Collck sad. "He lost hs holdera couple of weeks ago, but stll had fath n hm." "They were out for us, because we beat them n ther tournament last weekend," Laura Mller sad. The Flames captured the frst game 15-9, but Coach Sue Kelly was not pleased: "We were sloppy n the frst game. There wasn't much producton." Ganng confdence, UNC-Charlotte took a 3-6 lead over the Flames n the second game. However, Mller rose to the occason by servng three straght ponts for the Flames to te the score. COTA The Flames soccer team stretched ts wnnng streak to three games when LU defeated Malone College 2-0 Saturday afternoon and Appalachan State n double overtme, 2-1, on Thursday. Lberty also defeated Vanderblt Unversty on Sept. 29 for the thrd vctory. Even though executon of plays hndered the Lberty Unversty men's soccer team durng the past week, the Flames came away unscathed wth the help of tmely goals from unlkely sources. For the greater porton of the contest aganst Malone, Lberty walked a "tght rope" untl Bran Stephens broke the tenson to gve the Flames a 1-0 advantage over the Poneers wth 7:30 left n the game. 'The ball came n, and Regge (Whcaton) went up for the header. just happened to get t down and take a good shot, and t went n," Stephens sad. "After beatng Appalachan, we thought that because ths s an NAA team, ASUwas gong to be easy," coach Bll Bell sad, referrng to the lack of executon. "n the second half we played balls n quck, and thnk we domnated the whole second half. t was two dfferent games." The goal from Stephens was hs team-leadngffthon the season. The junor from Garrett, nd., also leads the team wth 10 ponts. Durng the last eght mnutes, t was just a matter of tme before the Flames saled a shot nto the net. Johnny Sasu shot a rocket from the top of the goalkeeper's box that naled the uprght of the goal and narrowly mssed scorng a goal. Stephens scored 30 seconds later on a Whcaton assst. Darren Shelbourne added an nsurance goal, for Lberty about two mnutes later off of a Sasu assst. After weavng through a pack of Malone defenders, Shelbourne admtted that hs frst goal as a Flame was luck. " just cut nsde and tapped t past another and just ht t. ddn't really look up. guess t's pretty lucky that t went n," Shelbourne sad. When asked how t felt to net hs frst goal, the freshman from West Pont, N. Y., sad: "t was my frst goal ever. t fell ncredble, unbelevable." See Soccer, Page 7 sad. "We showed a lot of class." Despte the three-man coverage used aganstthercsa Bream, the team pulled together to end up on top. "The key to the second game was gettng Km Thomas nvolved n offense more," Kelly remarked. "Also Ncole Nce provded strong blockng n the mddle." Thomas performed 10 klls, three aces and eght dgs for the Flames, whle Nce hadfveklls and 10 dgs. Bream executed 16 klls, 18 dgs and two block solos durng the match. Comng on strong n the thrd game, the Lady Flames left a tred Charlotte team n the dust wth the score As fans ralled around, Lberty won the thrd game 15-5 to take the match. "Lke we say, there's vctory n Jesus, and we're excted," Mller exclamed. The Flames frst extended ther wnnng streak Tuesday nght when they defeated UNC-Grccnsboro at home. An all-around performance led the Lady Flames to a 15-4 wn over Greensboro n the frst game. "Lberty has a good combnaton of passers and offensve htters leadng them to success," UNC-Grccnsboro coach Terry Dale commented. Hustlng n the second game, Greensboro gave LU some competton wth a close score of 6-5. However, drven by adrenalne, the Lady Flames moved further ahead to end the game Slowng down n the thrd game, Lberty fell behnd, losng "We were overconfdent n the th rd game," Kelly explaned. n the fourth game, Greensboro put up afght, keepng the Lady Flames alert throughout the game. However, under the strong leadershp of Thomas and Bream, Lberty stood vctorous, defeatng Greensboro to capture the match. Thomas came through wth 13 klls and 10 dgs n the match. "Km played the best match ' vc ever seen," Kelly sad. "She was the story; she was everywhere." Bream led the Flames wth 18 klls, 25 dgs and one block solo. Jennfer Hedges supported the team wth 10 dgs, and Mller had 41 servce aces. The hard work of the Lady Flames s payng off as they now look toward a chance at the East Coast Athletc Conference playoffs n November. 9 Page 8, The Lberty Champon Tuesday, Oct. 9, 1990 Game Sx Offensve woes contnue Lberty (4-2) vs. Youngstown St. (6-0) On Deck: Youngstown State When: October 13, 1990, 1:40 p.m. Where: Lberty Unversty Stadum, Lynchburg, Va. Seres: Ted 1-1 Coaches: Lberty, Sam Rutglano (2nd year, 11-5) Youngstown State, Jm Tressel (5th year, 29-24) Analyss: Even the most complcated of words could never descrbe the hurt and frustraton the Lberty football team felt after Saturday's astonshng defeat by Delaware State. t's the knd of loss that could throw the Flames nto a deep talspn for the rest of the 1990 season. The queston s: Can Lberty recover from the nghtmare that took place on Saturday evenng? f the Flames do rebound, t wll have to be aganst the toughest opponent on ther 1990 schedule, Youngstown State. The Penguns, sxth-ranked n Dvson 1-AA before Saturday's narrow wn over Western Kentucky, have won all sx of ther games ths year, ncludng an mpressve poundng of Dv. 1 -A Eastern Mchgan (remember them?). Last year, the Penguns fnshed the regular season wth an 8-3 record and advanced to the quarterfnal round of the playoffs. The Flames have a large debt to pay to the Penguns Saturday after gettng pounded by YSU n Youngstown last year. Lberty, n ts worst performance of the season last year, allowed an ncredble 413 yards on the ground whle ganng only 24 total rushng yards tself. Last year, the Penguns had one smple offensve game plan: run the football. Ths year s no dfferent. Talback Arche Herrng, who ran for 111 yards on only 19 carres aganst the Flames last year, returns as the key man n the backfeld. Ths year Herrng, who leads the Penguns wth 482 rushng, s second n the naton wth a 32.5 kckoff return average. Quarterback Ray ssac, who has completed only 45 passes for 783 yards ths year, has really had to focus on only one thng: the handoff. On defense, look for strong safety Dave Roberts to cause problems for the LU passng attack. Roberts has seven nterceptons n only sx games ths year. He s only three pckoffs away from breakng the YSU record. For LU, talback Leroy Knard had the best game of hs career Saturday, rushng for 154 yards on 15 carres and catchng fve balls for 75 yards. f Knard can fnally break loose after several neffectve outngs ths year, the Flames can boost one of the most powerful, balanced offenses n the naton. On defense the Flames stll must be wonderng exactly what happened n the great fourth quarter collapse. Hard-httng safety Erc Carroll was busy all nght makng a career-hgh 22 tackles whle lnebacker Johnny Woods got credt for 20'tackles. Despte the standout performance s, the LU defense has had problems playng four, effectve quarters n a game. There are many questons to be answered on Saturday. Can Lberty overcome one of the most devastatng losses n ts 18-year hstory? Can the Flames' defense stop one of the best ground games n Dvson 1 -AA? Are the Flames a playoff-calber team? Stay tuned. Saturday's game s make-t or break-t tme for Lberty. A loss could all but elmnate the Flames from the playoff pcture for another year, but a wn aganst a powerful YSVJ team would bolt Lberty back nto the heart of the Top 20. t's tme to get mad. K.B. Justno sad, "We thought we could push the ple and get some frst downs, but we ddn't beat them on the run." Delaware Slate, whose defense entered the game ranked second n rushng and nnth overall, was easy pckngs for Lberty durng the frst three quarters. Leroy Knard ganed 156 yards on 15 carres. Knard had gans of 71 and 38 and a 50-yard recepton. "Even though had a good game, t was overshadowed by the loss," the senor talback sad. Knard was not the only one who had a brllant offensve day spoled. Justno completed for 272 yards (261 n the frst half): "Rght now we just have to forgelabout ths game. t's over wth." Senor wde recever Scott Queen also domnated the frst half. Queen had fve receptons for 135 yards and two TD's. "We just have to go on and learn from our mstakes (11 penaltes, 85 yards)," McConnel sad. "We'll take a look at the flms, take notes and learn." CONRAD Vrgna Beach was no fun n the sun for the Lberty women's soccer team as t suffered ts thrd consecutve shutout by losng -0 to Vrgna Wesleyan College Saturday. The defeat was Lberty's seventh n a row, and t dropped the Lady Flames' overall record to 1-7. Although Lberty's offense contnued to struggle, the defense kept a vctory wthn close reach throughout the game. The contest remaned at a scoreless stalemate untl Vrgna Wesleyan scored the game' s on ly goal wth under fve mnutes remanng n the second half. Lberty assstant coach Allen Long saw a lght at the end of the dark tunnel: "We played our best game all year. t was just a matter of who scored frst. t was frustratng to lose a close game lke that." One postve moment came when Holly Lghtbody, recoverng from a recent njury, reclamed Lberty's startng goale job when she stepped nto the goal wth 15 mnutes remanng n the frst half. Krsta Whte, the Flames' substtute goale, played admrably by not allowng Vrgna Wesleyan to score for the frst 30 mnutes. The Lady Flames played well aganst what was, at least on paper, a superor team. V WC entered the contest followng four consecutve vctores, ncludng two n whch they thrashed Randolph- Macon and Sweet Brar by a combned score of Contrary to what Lberty's record mght ndcate, the Lady Flames contnue to show mprovementevery tme they step onto the feld. Long summed up Lberty's progress: "We played more as a team and played a whole lot better. We played the ball more and marked them (VWC) on defense." The Lady Flames seem to have beneftted from a week-long layoff. The vacaton gave the team an opportunty to regroup and work on ts sklls durng practce. t also gave njured players, such as Lghtbody and fullback Trac Camln, a chance to fully recover. Lberty's strong effort aganst Vrgna Wesleyan should provde the Lady Flames wth a boost of confdence and also set a postve tone for the remander of the season. The Lady Flames wll seek to mprove ther record as they take to the road twce n the upcomng week for back-to-back games at Tusculum College Oct. 12 and at Maryvllc College Oct. 13.
