3 Athlete Watch Navina s Territory By: Alyssa Pitambar Navina Mann feels so passionate she s willing to give up her time her strength and her thoughts all on one thing-tennis. Navina is as committed as anyone will ever be at tennis. This is only her second year and she has already pursed a high title in tennis by being a sophomore playing varsity. Navina has put in all her hard work and effort into become the very best tennis player she can be. She also has the amazing support of her parents. She said, They completely support me and my decisions... Navina has had to learn how to balance her school life and tennis practices she said it does get hard sometimes but she pushes through and remembers that school and tennis are 2 things she is so passionate about. Navina joined tennis because she wanted to be involved with the school and make new friends. Her biggest inspiration for tennis besides all the amazing athletes she loves she said her motivation for tennis was fitness and being healthy and active. She said tennis is a fun way to get exercise but still having fun. We asked her is tennis was physically demanding and she told us that it is and it s not just a game of ping pong. Tennis takes a lot of movement in order to follow the ball. Overall Navina Mann is a hard working student who is amazing at tennis and has proven you can be involved and have fun. 3
4 Sargent Major Williams by Jaime Sumner Manteca High School has many programs that are interactive. Our Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) at Manteca high school is well known for discipline. One of our new instructors is Sergeant Major Harold E. Williams. He was born in Mayo, Florida. He has a family with 2 children and 3 grandchild. All of his family serve in the military. His heroes are his mother and father. His elementary school teacher, Ms. Pearson, influenced him when he was young. Sergeant Major Williams serve more than 30 years in the United States Army. He served as an infantry man, drill sergeant, also first sergeant in many units. Also, he served as operations sergeant major for forces command. Sergeant Major served in Senior Reserve Officer Training Corps program at San Diego State University, and he is also a Vietnam veteran. His favorite thing about Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps is the cadets. The cadets are motivated. He is very excited for the finish product from the beginning to the end. He joined Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps because he wants to give back to the community 4 and motivate young citizens to become better adults.
5 Cheerleader of the Week by Vanessa Alicea Varsity cheerleader Andrew Gonzalez has high hopes for his first season. With all his hard work and effort he plans to become a strong cheerleader. Cheerleading has opened up Andrew, he has become a better person and cheerleader overall. Before joining the cheer team, Andrew felt like he didn t belong. He honestly didn t feel passionate about anything. Joining the cheer team has helped Andrew make lifelong friends and people he can always rely on. Being a cheerleader you have to possess some characteristics, you have to have an open & positive mindset, and commitment is big part of the sport. One of Andrew s proudest moments was to make the cheer squad. However, another positive to this accomplishment was the increase to his confidence. Cheer is not as easy as people make it seem. It takes hours of summer practice and preparation. Andrew thinks there really isn t a definition of cheerleader. MHS cheerleaders play a big role in the school s athletic program. Cheer squad members will go out of their way to show school pride. Cheerleading has helped Andrew find a place where he feels safe. He pictured cheer with open hands, he found his herd. He always gives 100% when he s out practicing. Cheer has become a big aspect of Andrew s life. Cheer has helped him become more involved in school and he plans to cheer his senior year. 5

8 Who is Coach Bolding? By: Malia Parangan Coach Bolding has been in Manteca from day 1. He attended Golden West from kindergarten to 8 th grade. Unfortunately, one of our favorite teachers at this WONDERFUL GREEN school attended high school at the Red school. While attending East Union High School, he was a three-sport athlete. He excelled in football, basketball, and tennis. After high school, Bolding went to Delta College. Then he transferred to Fresno State. After this he went to National University to earn his teaching credentials. Many of you may know Coach Bolding as being a Math for Business teacher right here on Manteca High s campus. He is going on his 23 rd year of teaching. Others of you may know Coach Bolding as being just thata coach. This is Coach Bolding s 20 th year coaching. The rest of us who don t have him as a teacher or a coach know him as the hilarious teacher in room 50. Coach Bolding s hobbies include fishing, listening to music, and relaxing. He enjoys watching sports. His favorite; The Olympics. Although it only comes once every four years, he loves it. Another one of his favorites is watching college sports. For football his favorite team is the 49ers but he supports any California football team. For basketball he represents the Lakers. When I asked him about coffee he said with a look of disgust on his face, I don t like coffee, but I LOVE STAR- BUCKS! confused, I asked what he orders if he doesn t like coffee. His order is a simple Mocha Frap I asked Coach Bolding, What is your favorite thing about Manteca High? My favorite thing about MHS are the great teachers and students. When you come to school, you are comfortable and you know you are safe because of the great environment that everyone contributes to.
