1 Phone Fax Newsletter Term 2 Week 4-23 rd May 2018 Principal s Report Volunteers Luncheon This Wednesday there will be a luncheon in our Home Ec Centre, as part of Volunteers Week, to acknowledge the work and show our appreciation for the volunteers who help at Millicent High School. Volunteers at our school include our Community Mentors, Governing Council members, Canteen helpers and people who help out in other ways like working in the permaculture garden or with our Pedal Prix team. On behalf of the school community I thank all the volunteers who help provide support and opportunities for our students, our student s lives are far richer as a result of their work. School Steam Our school is relying on the School Stream app more and more to communicate with our school community meaning very few printed newsletters are now produced. This app seems to be very successful as we can send out reminders and information quite quickly without needing to wait for a newsletter. Information about how to access School Stream is available from our Front Office. STEM works Our upgrade works is progressing well and our students and staff seem to be coping very well with the inconvenience of not being able to access parts of our school and being restricted in the number of stairs and access doors they can use. The works are on track to be completed by fourth term. SRC Well done to our 2018 SRC and their support teachers on a number of their new initiatives. Their Mother s Day breakfast was a great event and they are holding a Biggest Morning Tea for staff next Friday (25th May) at recess time to raise money for the Cancer Council. They have also been involved in a student leadership training day which will have benefits for those involved as well as our student community. Wellbeing This year we have introduced a number of wellbeing initiatives that are having a positive effect on our students and staff. One of these initiatives is our Wonder Wall that is located in our front foyer. Please find time to talk to your children about this and find out if they have received a star, you could also take the time to have a look at the Wonder Wall if you are visiting our Front Office. The number of students nominated by staff as part of this positive recognition strategy is amazing. Canteen Thank you to those students and families that are using our Canteen. EFTPOS was introduced this term to make purchases easier for students, parents and staff and it is proving quite popular. Janet, our new manager is settling in well and has been introducing some new exciting food options. 2 On May the 5 th, Millicent High Schools HPV Racing team headed out on a camp, 5 hours away in Loxton in the Riverland. There we competed in the second race of the year. All of us were filled with excitement and enthusiasm, which resulted in the adults having the hard task of getting us to bed at a reasonable hour on Saturday night. Believe me, getting up at 6am the next morning wasn t very easy! By 7.30am Sunday we were packed to make our way to the track. By 10.00am the team was set up and we were ready to take to the grid positions. Everyone was very excited to be there and motivated to do the best they could. Many riders felt a bit nervous, because for some of us, it was our first time racing at the Loxton meet. Racing first for RIPT, the school s student team, we had Oskar Lyndon. Riders made their way over to the grid to cheer on their first riders. Oskar managed to set the team up with a strong start to the race. He set a very high standard for the team. His fastest lap was minutes. Once Oskar came into the pits, our next rider, Amy Beckett hopped into the bike. Soon after she took off, a tire on the bike blew, which resulted in her coming back in on the first lap! The next rider, Natalia Marshall had to jump in really quickly after the tire was changed. Being a Loxton first timer, she had to put her nerves behind her and just do her best. Also dealing with her nerves was our other Loxton debutante Megan Alexander, her straight line speed was outstanding but Crash Corner had her sliding sideways more than once. Ruari Morley was next, followed by Madeline Fewster. Ruari and Madeline gained lots of ground for the team, together adding a total of 25 laps. Madeline was proud to announce when she finished that she had managed to go around Crash Corner ; where a lot of riders come unstuck; on two wheels every lap. Stepping back into the bike next was Amy, who did a very good job for the team, adding a further 10 laps to our growing lap count. Taite Brooks rode after Amy. He was able to keep our steady speed going smoothly. Taite s fastest lap time was a speedy minutes. Mic Randall and Tom Payne were the next two riders. With their experience and speed, they managed to bring the team up to the third place in our category. Mic set the team up with the fastest lap of a blistering minutes, and Tom was able to put 14 more laps on the team s tally. Dylan Randall was our final rider and as the end of the race was fast approaching, the intensity of the riders both on and off the track was building. Dylan was able to increase our lead from 4 th place to 5 laps ahead of our nearest rival. This ultimately locked the team into the third position for our racing category. Even though Dylan was able to lock us into the third place title, there were still some mechanical issues with the bike. A second tyre blew in Dylan s first lap, then in one of his last laps, the right brake gave away, causing him to a crash at crash corner. Even so, he was quickly back into the throng and finished in fine style. Throughout the day team members decided to manage pit changes by themselves, giving the adults a wellearned break. Everyone enjoyed doing this because it helped them to learn more about the bike mechanical and safety systems and how they work, which really helps in achieving faster pit changes. The teams favourite pit crew after this experience was definitely Madeline and Tom, though everyone had a turn and contributed to our excellent finishing result in some way. As the day was coming to a close, after the race, the team all headed over to the award presentations. Patiently, the riders of RIPT waited for their category, and when called, team captain Dylan walked up to receive the award. As he did the applause was thunderous! We were over the moon. In closing, everyone in the team did a very good job, and tried their hardest. The day s result was very pleasing and each person was extremely happy with our hard-won 3 rd place finish. This was the first podium finish that the Millicent High School HPV Racing Team have ever received, which made for a loud bus trip home. Maybe we can even improve on that next time!! - Natalia PROVIDING PATHWAYS TO THE FUTURE 2

3 Year 11 Surf Camp Week 3 from Wednesday through to Friday saw our Stage 1 year 11 Physical Education class head to Robe for their surf Camp. This Camp is part of their practical grade for the semester. We arrived at the Tarooki Campsite mid-morning, un-packed and got used to the surroundings. Students had a quick bite to eat and then got themselves ready for the first of their 4 surfing sessions. The afternoon put on pretty good conditions, with waves providing opportunity for both the brand new and some with experience. The students didn t let the seaweed dampen their spirits nor let the icy temperatures of the water get to them. After about 2.5hours in the water we headed back for a very deserved hot shower. The students were kept busy with card games, the entertaining Mafia game and spotlight. By around 10 the students were well and truly tired and headed off to bed. Thursday involved an early start (very early for some apparently) getting up at 7 to have breakfast and to get ready to put on the very comfy damp wetsuits for the mornings surfing session. The waves again were quite good and the students put in a solid 1.5hour session. We returned to the campsite for lunch and to again warm up. After lunch we headed back down to Longbeach for the final session of the day. The students were thrilled about putting on really wet and cold wetsuits and again braved the conditions. This session was one of the best with the students getting the most out of it and really starting to put on a show this could have been because a GoPro was being used to film them? The afternoons session ran for almost 2hours. Upon returning to the campsite, we found some firewood and lit a campfire where many of the students spent most of their evening warming themselves. The students were well and truly knackered by bedtime with little effort needed to coax them to bed. We had 1 final 1.5 hour session Friday morning. While being totally exhausted all the students put in a fantastic effort. We packed and cleaned up the campsite and headed off to Beachport for lunch. A few of the lads thought they deserved a pub lunch so treated themselves to a schnitzel and gravy. It was a fantastic camp where the students all helped out in the roles of either cleaning or meal preparation. The instructors were very impressed with our student s efforts, determination and skill. Noting that they were one of the best groups they have ever had. Mr Watson PROVIDING PATHWAYS TO THE FUTURE 3
