Use the restroom before rehearsal; if you have an emergency during rehearsal, leave the stage and tell the chaperone. are Proud to Present the 2019 Junior All-State Band Conducted by The 3-day/2-night Junior All-State Band event requires that students miss one day of school (or two, depending on travel time). Please follow your school policy in order to arrange an excused absence well in advance of the event. 3 The Jr. All-State Band is an honor ensemble, and so the dress code has been chosen to lend significance to this special event. All outfits should be limited to the colors of black and white within the following two options: Option 1 Formal Ladies: solid black dress (below the knee or longer), black dress shoes. Gentlemen: white button-down dress shirt, tie, black dress pants, black jacket, black socks, black dress shoes (in other words, a black suit or tux). Option 2 Concert Black Ladies: long sleeve black dress shirt or top, black dress pants, black dress shoes. Gentlemen: long sleeve black dress shirt, black tie, black dress pants, black socks, black dress shoes. November 28, 2018 Congratulations! You have been selected to represent your school in the 2019 Indiana Junior All-State Band. This is a great honor and privilege for you, as the JASB has established its reputation as one of the finest youth performance ensembles in the nation! This award reflects the talent and dedication of you and your music teachers. The All-State Festival will be an exciting experience that you will remember for many years. It is extremely important that you and your parents read through each part of this handbook. This will insure a successful weekend for you and the ensemble. Your registration form and fee must be postmarked by Dec. 15 th. On behalf of the Indiana Bandmasters Association, please accept our most sincere congratulations! 4 Please complete the enclosed registration & medical form now and return it with your check for $195, payable to the Indiana Bandmasters Association. Your form & fee must be postmarked by Saturday, December 15, Mail to: Indiana Bandmasters Association P.O. Box 1080 Brownsburg, IN The registration fee helps cover meals, housing and operational costs for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Members must be present for the entire event, from 6:45pm on Thursday, January 17 to 2:15pm on Saturday, January 19. If you cannot attend the Junior All-State Festival due to severe illness, death in the family, or any other type of emergency, please contact (or have your band director contact) IBA coordinator Rob Shaver, at or (765) It is important that we fill your position as soon as possible. 4 Because of the significance of this event you are expected to behave as a model student both in and out of rehearsal. Failure to follow the rules may result in your expulsion from this event. 1. Absolutely no alcohol, tobacco, or drugs permitted. 2. No boys in girls areas or rooms at any time and no girls in boys areas or rooms at any time. 3. No one is to leave the hotel building except with the group under supervision of our chaperones. 4. Observe the in room times and lights out times each night. 5. Use a cell phone (not the hotel phone) to make calls from your room; no calls after lights out. 6. Be considerate of other hotel guests and property. 7. Be polite and respectful to the hotel staff and IBA chaperones who will assist you throughout the event. 8. Attend all meals, which will be provided for you. 9. You must be in attendance at all rehearsals and activities throughout the event. The event begins at registration and ends at the conclusion of the concert. 10. Contact a chaperone (not our guest conductor) if you have any problems. 9

5 The music you find in this packet should match your part assignment shown on the front of your envelope. Please be sure you have all the music for each piece. This envelope and the sticker attached to it must be presented at registration. After the concert you will turn in your envelope with all this music that is on loan to you. Make all marks on your music in pencil only (no pen, marker, or highlighter). Seek assistance from your director or private teacher to prepare the music thoroughly. Please study the recordings available online. By the time you receive this music you will have just about one month to prepare, so take advantage of your time off and practice over the holidays.j The staff and your conductor will expect you to arrive with the music prepared and at the marked tempos. Junior All-State begins with registration (6:00pm to 6:45pm) at the Grand Wayne Convention Center (Anthony Wayne Ballroom B) located at 120 West Jefferson Blvd., Fort Wayne. Parking is available for a fee at the Harrison Square Parking Garage (corner of Jefferson & Harrison). Bring everything in with you to registration. We will check in your luggage, issue you a name badge and your All-State t-shirt, and answer any questions you or your parents may have. Your first rehearsal (sectional) begins promptly at 7:00pm; plan accordingly to arrive on time! We will be staying at the Marriott Courtyard (downtown Ft. Wayne) located at 1150 South Harrison Street, just 1 block south-east of the convention center (hotel phone # is ). Hotel assignments are quad occupancy; roommates will be assigned by gender, then by school. The hotel provides sheets, blankets, towels, and pillows. Please bring the necessary toiletries, casual dress for rehearsals, and formal attire for the concert. Students are not allowed to leave the hotel at any time except when we do so as a group. Adult chaperones will be present throughout the entire event, including overnight, to provide room check 8 service, and in the morning to provide wake up service. 5

6 The Junior All-State Band will be performing at 1:00pm on Saturday, January 19 at the Embassy Theatre located at 125 West Jefferson Blvd., Fort Wayne, IN Parking is available for a fee at the Civic Center Parking Garage located off of Jefferson Boulevard and Calhoun Street and also at the Harrison Square parking garage located off Harrison Street. Five meals are provided through your registration fee: breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Friday, plus breakfast and lunch on Saturday. Please be sure to eat dinner before you check-in at registration on Thursday. All students are required to be at all meals. You may want to bring some snack food with you in your luggage, or some money for vending machines at the hotel. This performance is one of the showcase concerts for the 2019 Indiana Music Education Association State Convention. Parents are encouraged to attend this free concert, but please arrive early. (Parking is not free.) Students will be released to parents after the concert, at approximately 2:15pm. Plan to meet your child inside the Grand Wayne Convention Center, which is directly across the street from the theatre. Students will meet you on the west end of the GWCC, outside Convention Hall B1 & B2, which is where their cases and luggage will have been stored during the concert. Parents must arrive in person to pick up their child; no student will be allowed to leave the convention center without a parent. 6 [ ] Instrument [ ] All music, the manila envelope your music is in, and this handbook [ ] Percussionists, please check the music for necessary mallets, sticks, accessory instruments, etc. [ ] Miscellaneous equipment: tuner, reeds, mutes, pencils, valve oil, etc. [ ] Folding/wire stand (if you own one) for sectionals [ ] Concert dress [ ] Toiletries [ ] Casual clothes for rehearsal on Friday [ ] Heavy coat, hat, gloves for walking outside (about a 30-second walk from hotel to rehearsal hall) [ ] Money for snack (optional) 7
