1 Volume 1, Issue 3 WESTSIDE OF THE VALLEY ATHLETIC NEWS IT TAKES A VILLAGE West Catholic Community, WC Athletics Bi-Monthly Newsletter As we transitioned from fall sports to winter sports, I wanted to take a quick minute to thank everyone that helps to provide support for our and department. We are blessed to have quality people in positions to allow the variety of sports to take place at West Catholic. We offer 27 varsity sports for our students. This is an amazing number especially due to the fact we currently have just over 500 students in the building. These opportunities for the students to continue to grow their bodies, minds and spirits align with the mission of the school. FUNDRAISERS Fish Fry Dates Announced Soon SPIRIT STORE HOURS Fridays 3 p.m. - 4 p.m. For further information contact: adamantor@grwestcatholic.org To host the many events we are fortunate to have, there is an abundance of people behind the scenes that help to make it happen. Before the game starts, our custodial crew is making sure the floor is scrubbed and bleachers are clean. The maintenance staff clears the snow and throws down salt for everyone's safety. Our concessions volunteers make sure the shelves are stocked and popcorn is on-point! Our game staff of ticket takers, announcers and scorekeepers are always on time - ready and willing with a smile. Our trainer ensures our are taped and ready for action in case of injury during a contest. Our game manager greets teams and officials to provide help to show other schools how hospitable the West Community truly is. Our wonderful coaches spend countless hours preparing our kids both on and off the court. The many life-long lessons they help provide and instill in our is such an important part of educational athletics. All of this happens before the contest starts in hopes of providing all an enjoyable experience. In this edition not only are we showcasing super senior, but also our rock in the department: Sue Armstrong. Sue has been a member of the athletic department for 27 years. During those years Sue has done many jobs in order to achieve and maintain excellence in the department we strive for. Her dedication and friendship is truly appreciated and valued. As you can see, it truly takes a village to support an athletic department. I thank everyone for their dedication in helping to provide excellence in our department. GO WEST! Denny --

2 SENIOR SPOTLIGHT-MARIA MARZOLF Golf and Tennis. All of my coaches have made a positive impact on my life. They have continued to help me grow in many different ways and have helped me achieve the goals I set for myself. Anatomy, Chemistry and Art. "Get involved in sports and clubs. It s a great way to meet new friends." Maria's advice to incoming Mrs. Check, Mr. Hyland, Mr. Lynch and Mrs. Nawrocki. My favorite memory happened my sophomore year. It was my first varsity golf tournament and I ended up scoring in the top 10 and earned a medal. Boating, spending time with family and friends, traveling, drawing, watching Christmas movies and watching Notre Dame football. Notre Dame

3 SENIOR SPOTLIGHT-EMMA HERMAN Cross Country, Competitive Cheer and Track & Field. Noreen Duba is a very positive and helpful coach that really pushes our team to do our best and it s good for us. Anatomy. Mrs. Hathaway, Mrs. Hart and Mrs. Lowell. "Enjoy your four years!" Emma's advice to incoming I've enjoyed getting to be with my team every day and we have so much fun together. 4 SENIOR SPOTLIGHT-NICHOLAS KIMBALL Tennis and Baseball. Mr. Lynch, because he knows how to have fun at practice but still get work done. Science. Mr. Nawrocki and Mrs. Byrne. 5 STAFF SPOTLIGHT Athletics - Sue Armstrong How long have you been at WC? I started working at WC in September, What makes WC special to you? The friends who have become like family, the strong Community involvement, and the never-ending surprises that pop up every day! Describe one of your favorite memories involving athletics. Winning the State Championship in Football in Being a part of it was amazing. MRS.
