INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT stands at the window. Five nails protrude from his mouth. A series of boards rests against the wall. Next to the boards is a tire iron. The curtain is pulled back so Ben can work on the window. The window already has two boards protecting it. The window itself is closed, except for a half-inch section at the bottom. BARBARA sits restively in a corner of the room. Her knees drawn into her chest, she rocks back and forth, eyes closed. Ben picks up a board, strategically steadies it across the width of the window, removes a nail from his mouth, and hammers the nail into the wall. He does this for each side of the board/window. He then tugs on the board to make sure it is solidly in the wall. The board holds. He begins to repeat this action with another board. JUDY enters from the bedroom. She walks backwards and keeps her eyes trained on something in the other room. Ben, intent on his work, does not realize her presence. He continues hammering. Barbara, oblivious to the world, keeps rocking, eyes still clamped shut. While walking backwards, Judy bumps into a chair. She screams and whips herself around. Barbara s eyes spring open. She too screams. She pushes herself up against a wall. Startled by the unexpected commotion, Ben drops his board. In a flash, he picks up the tire iron and holds it behind his head ready to strike. Barbara, now upset by Ben s threatening posture, moves from one wall to the other. Eyes wide, she rocks faster and faster. Ben and Judy look at one another. For a moment they are relieved. But only for a moment. Unable to speak, Judy points to the bedroom. Ben looks at the window. The curtain has fallen back into place. He turns back to Judy who takes two more steps away from the bedroom, though her eyes remain fixed on the bedroom door.
2. Ben looks at Barbara who rocks and rocks. He turns again to the window, which remains calm. He moves to Barbara. As he gets closer, the pace of her rocking increases. She flinches when he crouches next to her, but she allows him, without even realizing it, to place the hammer in her hand. Ben then moves ahead of Judy toward the bedroom. His tire iron remains poised. With Ben in the lead, Judy follows. In the empty room, Barbara rocks nervously. A gust of wind coming through the window billows the bottom of the curtain. INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT and JUDY enter from the living room. They see TOM, a ten year old boy, lying on the bed, apparently unconscious. A blanket covers his body to his chin. Sections of the blanket have blood stained through them. There is more blood leading from the bathroom to the bed. stands a safe distance away from Tom. With both hands he points a handgun toward the boy. When Ben and Judy enter the room, Cooper swings the gun toward them. Ben instinctively pulls back his tire iron threateningly. Cooper cocks the pistol. Ben relaxes his arm. Slowly, he places the tire iron on the floor. In turn, Cooper un-cocks the gun and lowers his weapon. Tom stirs. His arm falls from beneath the blanket. Ben notices scratch and bite marks on Tom s arm. A makeshift bandage attempts to stop the bleeding, but it does little to help. At the sudden motion by Tom, Cooper again directs the gun toward the boy. Judy runs to Tom. Ben attempts to stop her, but he is too late. She positions herself in the line of Cooper s would-be fire. For a second he keeps the gun aimed in her direction. He then points it toward the ceiling.
3. Judy bends to Tom, picks up his arm, and re-tucks it under the blanket. She touches his forehead and cradles his head in her arms. Cooper moves to Ben. You re wasting your time in there. There are too many windows, too many doors throughout the rest of the house to defend them all. If we restrict ourselves to just one room, we can defend ourselves better. Besides, the boy is the real threat. He could be one of them. He s not the one with the gun. What s that supposed to mean? It means that right now an unconscious ten-year old boy is the least of our problems. Judy, who has been tending to her ailing brother, looks admiringly at Ben. (CONT D) If you will excuse me, I have a house to fortify. That s a lot of work for one man. Judy stands determinedly. JUDY I ll help. What about your brother? Judy looks from Tom to Cooper. JUDY He ll be fine. A clambering from the living room: the sound of glass breaking and wood being pried apart.
4. BARBARA, from the living room, screams. Cooper closes the door to protect himself. Barbara screams again. Ben opens the door and charges into the living room. INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT, tire iron in hand, charges through the living room door. Cooper closes the door behind him. Barbara is a huddled mass on the floor. ZOMBIE HANDS and HEADS squeeze through the openings between the boards on the window. They growl. They bare their teeth and swipe with their rotted arms. As they try to fit through the window, Ben knocks them away with blows of his tire iron to their heads. Barbara continues screaming. Ben battles and battles until the Zombies are no longer at the window. INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT (CONT D. FROM P. 3) You re right. JUDY looks suspiciously at Ben. (CONT D) But if we hole ourselves up in the bedroom and they do get through, we ve go nowhere to go. If we fortify the whole house we have more room to maneuver. We can hold out longer, maybe even until help arrives. What about the boy? He s harmless. Look at him.
5. The two look at TOM. Judy shields her brother from their gaze. (CONT D) If there s any problem we re only a room away. Are you with me? (reluctantly) I m with you. Good. Now the first thing is to board up those windows. A clambering from the living room: the sound of glass breaking and wood being pried apart. BARBARA, from the living room, screams. Ben charges immediately into the other room. INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT, tire iron in hand, charges through the living room door. Cooper stand in the doorway behind him. But Ben s defense cannot keep up with the Zombie onslaught. More Zombies appear than Ben can knock away. Suddenly, a shot sounds and a Zombie falls dead, a bullet through the head. Cooper stands behind Ben, his gun aimed at another Zombie. He shoots again. A second Zombie falls. Between Cooper s gunshots and Ben s tire iron, the two are able to thwart the attack. From the dining room, the sound of Zombie s attempting to break through the windows.
6. The dining room. Quick. Cooper picks up an armful of boards and the hammer and nails and runs into the dining room to board the windows there. Barbara lies in the fetal position on the floor moaning. BARBARA Johnny. Johnny. Johnny. Ben comforts Barbara by putting his arm around her. At first she resists his attempts at affection. But his persistence wins her over. Once Barbara is calm, Ben picks up a board. He takes it to a window by the fireplace. He looks at Barbara and shows her, in an exaggeratedly slow manner, how to board up the windows. He holds out the hammer and nails to her. She stands, sheepishly accepts the tools, and begins working on a window of her own. But she works at a snail s pace, and there are large gaps between her slats of wood. Keeping an eye on Barbara to make sure she continues her work, Ben sneaks into the bedroom. INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT Gun tucked into his pants, boards up a window. JUDY continues tending to TOM, who now begins to moan softly. JUDY Shh. Shh. Both Cooper and Judy give a frightened start when opens the door and enters the bedroom. Ben sits next to Judy on the bed and examines Tom s wounds. Cooper continues boarding up the window. Another noise from the living room. Ben again races to Barbara s defense. Ben marches straight to Cooper. He picks up the boards that are at Cooper s feet. Hey!
7. Ben, boards in hand, leaves the bedroom. As soon as he is through the bedroom door, another noise from the living room sounds. Judy grabs Tom more tightly. Cooper stands as far away from the door as possible. INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY BARBARA lies on her back and Zombies force their way through the window she was boarding. But she jumps back to her feet. She smacks at the Zombies with her hammer. She even continues boarding the window, double-time. When she finishes, however, she drops the hammer and nails and returns to her secure place in the center of the room, her knees again drawn into her chest as she rocks back and forth and talks to herself. BARBARA Johnny. Johnny. Johnny. attempts the same methods of coercion as he did previously: he attempts to put his arm around her; he shows her how to board up the windows. But this time to no avail. Ben leaves Barbara in her stupor. He goes to the bedroom. INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT continues boarding windows. stands in a corner, gun drawn, looking suspiciously at JUDY and TOM, whose moans have become more intense. approaches JUDY. He extends his hand, which she accepts. Ben begins leading Judy out of the bedroom. But the farther away she gets from Tom the more resistant she becomes. When she gets to the door of the bedroom, she falls to the floor and refuses to budge. Ben lets go of her and she runs back to Tom. Ben moves back to the living room.
8. INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT offers his hand to Barbara. She stands up. But she will not move anywhere on her own. Wherever Ben goes, Barbara follows closely behind. She is his shadow. Ben, with Barbara in tow, moves back to the bedroom. INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT continues boarding windows. stands in the corner. JUDY tends to TOM. enters the bedroom. BARBARA is right behind him. Barbara and Judy embrace. Ben hands Judy the tools to board up a window. She begins working on a window in the bedroom. Barbara, seeing Judy working, moves to help her. The two of them work together boarding up the window, though they still work at a relatively slow pace. With the three other members of the house working dutifully, Ben surveys the rest of the house. INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT searches drawers in the kitchen. He discovers a gun.
