1 N E W S L E T T E R American Legion Post 77 P.O. Box 625, 101 8th St Logan, NM Phn: (575) Fax: (575) Web Site & NMLegionPost77@plateautel.net Editor: Joe Frey February 2019 COMMANDER Greetings Post 77: I wish we would get some moisture and not just cold and wind. I hope everyone made it safely into Sorry this newsletter has to start on a sad note. Long time member Bob Solberg passed on January 5 th in Clovis. We were not notified about this till January 18 th. Bob held several officer positions in Post 77 and was a long time Club and Gaming Manager when it started. David Curnes from Portales also passed away; he was a 35 year member of the Legion. We will drape the Charter for Bob and David before starting the February 14 th General meeting at 6:00PM. The SAL lost Larry Arnett. See the SAL input. Our condolences go to the Family s. It s that time of the year again. Post Officer elections will be held at the March meeting, nominations will start at the February meeting. I ask the membership to please come out and participate in the election. Our Club functions are doing great. Good turnouts for Friday Night Family nights, Pool tournaments and Dances. I THANK all the Post 77 Family members who volunteer and make all this happen. I encourage members who have not renewed their membership to please do so. Also please remember you MUST have your 2019 Membership Card and a valid Government ID on your person at all times while at Club and Casino 77, keep them handy. Please remember that profanity is NOT permitted at Club and Casino 77. We are a Family organization. Many of the things at the Club and the Bingo Hall in bad repair have been fixed. As things get fixed we find new hidden problems and we re trying to stay ahead of them. For those in need of US 3 x5 Flags, we just received some. They are the Polyester weather flags and take the winds better then the Nylon Flags, cost is $25. The Legion Mid Winter conference will be February 8 th through 10 th at the Remada Plaza (Formally the Elegante Hotel). There will be No Bingo on Sunday the 10 th. Happy Valentine s Day. Joe Frey, Post 77 Commander Auxiliary greetings A.L.A. members: Well it s February hopefully the weather will start getting warmer. I want to let everyone know our monthly meetings will be on the second Monday of the month again (Monday the 14 th in February). The mid-winter conference will be February 8th to Feb 10th at the Ramada Plaza, Albuquerque (Formerly known as the Elegante Hotel). If you wish to attend, come by the Bingo Hall and pick up a registration form. All the ALA Officers will attend so there will be no Bingo on 02/10/2019. Unit 77 Crafters are working every Wednesday making lap robes, spinal cord blankets and other comfort items for our Veterans. If you could join us from 9:00AM to 3:00PM it would be appreciated. It s fun and rewarding. We are still collecting soda can tabs, current 1
2 coupons and box top coupons for the Schools and etc. The Unit cooks Hamburgers at Club 77 every 3 rd Friday at Family Night each month, so come out and support your Post. We will have tickets for a Queen Quilt drawing so please do your part by buying and selling them. The proceeds will go to help pay for Convention expenses in June. Hope everyone is in good health this year so we can continue to do what needs to be done. Don t forget the Valentines Dance February 9 th. For God and Country, Gloria Rhoads, ALA Unit 77 President S.A.L Greetings from the SAL: The New Year 2019 is here and about a month is already gone. Hope everyone makes the best out of the remainder of the year. A reminder that the SAL drawing for the 55 Vizio Smart TV will be Feb. 9, 2019 at the Valentines Day Dance at the American Legion. Thanks to all the members that have taken tickets to sell. Please return the tickets and proceeds (hopefully members can sell them all) to Moe Ramirez by Feb. 8 or at the meat draw on that date. Get your tickets soon as there is not much time left. Thanks to all that support our fund-raising efforts. Thanks to the American Legion for their hard work in putting the New Years Dance together. Lots of work put into making an enjoyable time for all that attended. Good band, good breakfast burritos, good crowd and lots of fun. THANKS. Condolences go out to Alfie Arnett and his family on the death of his brother, Larry Arnett. Larry was a SAL member of our Squadron #77 for the last six years. Keep Alfie and his family in your prayers. Thanks again to all the SAL individuals that are assisting with cooking on Friday Night Eats. Glen and Kim Lubera have been frequently assisting on Fridays when needed. Moe and Bernice Ramirez cooked the fourth Friday in January and Jeff Bailey and Skinny Hinson (new SAL member) have volunteered to cook on the fourth Friday in February. The SAL voted our scholarship committee in at the last meeting. Members will be Randy Hargrove, Bryan Rinestine and Moe Ramirez. Everyone please make plans on attending the Legion s Valentine s Day Dance on Saturday, Feb. 9 th. Come out, have fun, and help the club with this fund-raiser. The next regular meeting of SAL Squadron #77 will be Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. Submitted by: Apolonio Moe Ramirez Squadron Commander, SAL Club 77 Greetings from your Club: We had a great New Year s Party; Limited Edition always plays great music and everyone liked the Breakfast at midnight. Thanks Auxiliary Unit 77 for preparing it. We have already laid on Limited Edition for the next New Year s Dance. The Valentine s Day Dance will be on February 9 th with Limited Edition Band. They were 2
3 already booked for the 16 th. If all works out they will be here every month for our dances. Watch the calendar and flyers. Our Coors Light Beer kegerator gave out so we re looking for a new one. Hang in there all Coors drinkers, we will find one. Thanks for supporting the Club and Casino. See you at the Valentine s Day Dance. Your Club 77 Staff. Adjutant Greetings Legion Family: and a Happy New Year to everyone. Well time to start our programs for the American Legion, to Honor our Veterans. Some of these programs haven't been done in a few years. Need someone to step up and get them going again. I had these program going, but step down, as I didn't have time to work on them. Have been asked about them and why we don't do anymore. These are American Legion Celebration. We have Vietnam Day in March, Memorial Day in May, which we still do, D-Day, June 6, Flag Day June 14, 4th of July Celebration, Patriot Day, 9/11 in September, Veteran Day, November 11, and Pearl Day. December 11. Think about it. On a sad note, we have lost two members to POST EVERLASTING. We lost Bob Solberg who was a member for many years, Korean war Veteran. Was a very active member since the beginning of A L Post 77. The other member was David Curnes, who was a A L member for 32 years. Transfer from California to Post 77. Was a Vietnam Veteran. Please keep their family in your prayers. We will be doing the Draping of Charter for them, at our next meeting, which will be on Thursday February, 15. As for membership it has been very slow. I have to many to list on this newsletter, but will be posted at club. Have 21 who have not paid for 2017, and there names will be removed from National roster by February1, since they will be suspended. Have 29 members who have not paid there dues for There are now delinquent, and will be put on the suspended if not paid by February1. You will loose your privileges to some benefits for National. As for Post 77, you will lose privilege to go to Game Room, until you pay your dues and have membership card in hand. Put your membership dues in box on left as you walk into club or mail them to AL Post 77, PO Box 625, Logan, NM On last newsletter I posted on event that will be coming up around the State for the Centennial Celebration. Post 77 elections will be coming up and March, and we need some position that need to be filled. Please help do your part and help us come up with a few ideas. UNTIL NEXT MONTH...GOD BLESS YOU. VAYA CON DIOS Robert L. Casados Post 77 Adjutant & Membership Chair ALA Unit 77 Membership Greetings ALA Sisters; In just a couple of weeks a few of Unit 77 members will be attending the ALA Department of New Mexico Mid- Year conference, February 8, 9, 10, 2019 in Albuquerque, NM. What is Mid-year Conference; we will have reached midway of the Fiscal Year. It s the time when department officers, department chairman give midyear reports on the Unit Program Activities, and a time for ALA sisters to get together and fellowship. It s a fun and informative time, any member can attend, if you are interested in attending, you can get a registration form from Gloria Rhoads or Judy Casados. The National ALA President Kathy Dungan will be making official her visit to New Mexico during the Mid-Year conference. The American Legion and the Sons of the American Legion have meeting too. Unit 77 Membership is still coming in very slow, we have barley reached 55% membership renewals, last year at this time we were at 62% membership renewals. Get your renewal paid, and help Unit 77 reach the paid target dates. With your renewal we can get it done. ATTENTION: At the monthly January meeting, it was discussed and passed that the Unit 77 meetings will be moved back to the 2 nd Monday of each month, starting in March. Monday evenings were much better for the Unit officers and the few members that attend the meetings to attend on Monday evenings. The Unit is still trying to raise funds for the New Mexico Girls State Program, we ve been raffling off a monthly basket of goodies, the December raffle was a good success. We have another couple of small basket of 3
4 goodies ready to get raffled off. My self or Debbie McClure will have tickets if you are interested, and when either one of attend the club on Friday evenings, we will have the baskets for you to see.
