1 Covington Latin School FALL 2012 Editors: Alex Trunnell and Jessica Chan Introducing Mr. Woltering! By Hallie Fogarty I got to interview the headmaster, Mr. Woltering. I first asked him simple favorite questions, such as favorite color, and his answer was blue. I also asked about his favorite wild animal: sea lion, favorite food: hamburger; and hobbies: farming, carpentry, and skeet shooting (the shooting of discs thrown in the air). Another subject of questions I asked him were about C.L.S. First, I asked him about what his favorite thing about C.L.S. was and he replied, the students. I also asked him what made him come to C.L.S. and he said he wanted to lead (and serve) a great school, be part of a great community and wanted to follow the Lord. The last question I asked him about C.L.S. was what he future of our school looked like to him. He told me he wanted continued excellence, increased enrollment and spiritual growth. Since Mr. Woltering just moved back to the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area, I asked him about his old life before Covington Latin. I wondered about his old school in Virginia. I asked him what he liked best about his old school and he said that it was a tight and fun community. I also asked him about his position at his old school; he replied that it was his first time being Headmaster, before he was Academic Dean. I wondered about what he enjoyed most being back in the area and he told me he was enjoying being back in his old home and he liked the small town feel of the area. I asked what sorts of things he was enjoying doing in the area and he told me he was appreciating spending time with family, getting to know Northern Kentucky and going to Reds games. Since everyone has an opinion on Cincinnati chili, I asked him about his standings on Goldstar vs. Skyline. He prefers Skyline and his favorite thing there is Cheese Coneys. Since one of his hobbies was farming, I asked him about his old farm and what got him interested in farming. He grew up on a farm and he missed that most about his old home. He told me he grew a vegetable garden, blueberries and raspberries. He raised chickens (for eggs), pigs (for bacon) and sheep. He also said that since he grew up on a farm, he still farms and he likes growing his own food. That s all I asked the new Headmaster in my interview. I think we all know a lot more about him now, I know I do! Salvete, omnes! And for those who do not yet speak Latin, hello. My name is Alex Trunnell and I am one of your Senior Editors for the newspaper this year. As many of you returning CLSers know, the newspaper has not been very consistent in the past. We want to change this, putting out more fun issues and more of them. On behalf of the entire newspaper team, thank you for reading this first edition fo the Leader, and I hope you enjoy! Please, if you have an article to put in the next issue.. Don t hesitate to me! me an idea or article at a.j.trunnell@gmail.com. Or, just find me in the hallways at good old CLS. Thanks, and happy reading! Mr. Woltering Fast Facts: Favorite Color: Blue Favorite Animal: Sea Lion Favorite Food: Hamburger Hobbies: Farming, Carpentry, Skeet Shooting Issue Highlights: Meet Mr. Woltering! 2 Page 2 The Perks of Being a Wallflower By Stephen Chbosky THE ALCHYMIST Who knew that a simple mixtape could help you make new friends? Such is the case in the movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which goes into wide release October 5 th. Based on the 1999 novel by Steven Chbosky, Perks follows introverted incoming Freshman Charlie (Logan Lerman of Percy Jackson ) around for a full year of high school as he struggles to overcome his social anxieties and make new friends. At first it seems that he ll spend the next four years as a lonely outcast, but as luck would have it, his love of 80s indie band The Smiths (whom he first discovered on a mixtape) lands him a few buddies who just happen to be upperclassmen. Forming companionships with Sam (Emma Watson of Harry Potter fame) and the outspoken and rebellious Patrick (Ezra Miller), Charlie enters a world unadulterated by mainstream pop culture or Top 40 hits. Together the gang trade mixtapes, (a hobby of mine) create underground magazines and learn what it s like to feel infinite. The storyline feels like an updated version of coming-of-age classics like Salinger s The Catcher in the Rye. With a plot that strays from the clichés that plague modern teen films, the movie will most likely feel like 1985 classic flick The Breakfast Club rather than Mean Girls. It will certainly be interesting to hear Watson s attempt at an By Michael Scott American accent, but I m most looking forward to seeing what sort of wardrobes, band posters and other props will be deployed to portray Pittsburgh circa Be sure to check out the movie soundtrack, which features two of my favorite 80s songs, Temptation by New Order and Pearly Dewdrops Drops by Cocteau Twins. Overall, anybody who considers his or herself a bit of a wallflower, (someone who avoids social situations or just goes unnoticed), will most likely enjoy this movie. Although I haven t seen the movie yet, I hope that it lives up to the lofty expectations set by the novel. Review by Jude Noel For Potterheads and non- Potter fans alike, The Alchemyst, written by Michael Scott, is the first book in a series of adventures experienced by the legendary alchemist Nicholas Flamel. Set in present day San Francisco, the story opens with a fight scene between Nicholas and Dee, an evil m a g i c i a n. P u r e l y b y coincidence, the two main characters, Sophie and Josh Newman, a set of twins, are caught in the crossfire. As strange lights flash around the bookstore where Nicholas worked, the twins accept it; they have been exposed to magic. Swept up in a whirlwind, the twins become involved in something beyond them. In the bookstore battle, Nicholas s wife, Pernelle, and the Codex, a mysterious book containing the secret to immortality, along with much other dangerous magic, are abducted by Dee. The twins and Nicholas begin a flight for their lives all across North America. Soon, a new character is added to the mix, Scathach, or Scatty. Scatty is an Elder. The Elders were a race of powerful creatures that lived on Earth before humanity. They are divided by their intentions: The Elders and the Dark Elders. The Dark Elders believe that humanity should exist only as a slave race, or as food. Dee is allied with these Elders. Nicholas is not. Deep within the stolen Codex lays a prophecy, saying there will come a pair of twins with silver and gold auras, (the field of power surrounding every person) with the power to destroy the world, or to save it. Sophie s aura is silver. Josh s is gold. Could they be the twins of legend? As Nicholas takes the twins to be Awakened, a process that will either reveal the magical potential of a person, or kill that person, a battle between two Elders rages. In the mayhem, Josh cannot be Awakened. Sophie undergoes the terrible process of Awakening, but can she survive? Can any of them survive? Review by Regan Wakefield
3 Page 3 Covington Latin Golf By Luke Hackman The Covington Latin Varsity Golf team had a good season this fall. There were six players: Anna Matchinga, Brendan Connelly, Mitchell Blewett, Alex Green, Daniel Zalla and Robby Case. They practiced 2-3 days a week at the Kenton County Golf Course and were coached by Jim Matchinga. This was my first year on the team and I had a great time, said Prep Robby Case. I met a lot of new people and improved my golf game too! They were a strong team and came close to winning almost every match. Their season ended Tuesday September 25th with the Regional Tournament where they played other local high schools. They gave it their best and played well, but were outmatched in the end. girls soccer By Jessica Chan No more complaining about not running laps. No more complaining about running laps. No more pretending to run laps. And no more Dan quotes. Five years of Latin School girls soccer have finally come to an end, but the memories will live on forever. Memories ranging from prancing around the field tossing Cheerios to pulling off a win against Holy Cross, a team by which we had previously been mercy ruled. Tears were shed after this game not only by the Holy Cross girls, but also by our current and graduated players. Beating Holy Cross 3-1 was just one of many records set this season, though. Bridgette Hildreth, through her consistent playing and drive to contribute, earned first in the state for goals scored with nearly 30 goals. Our self-proclaimed sweeper, Katie Bischoff, also finished as a top scorer. On the other end of the field, our fabulous keeper, Jaida Bolin, finished the season fourth in northern Kentucky for the most saves. As a team we ended our season with a tying record of 9-9, mercy ruling several teams and pulling off several shutouts, and, with a total of 66 goals, were ranked in the top ten teams in the state for the most goals scored. Compared to a team that, just a few years ago did not exist, and then one for whom it was pretty common to lose badly, the growth of this team over the past couple years is unparalleled. We are a miraculous team, and Coach Tom is unwaveringly proud of us. None of this could ve been accomplished without the depth of a solid midfield, defense, and offense. While these stats are wonderful, they do not capture the character of our team. Looking back on my years on this team, I will most vividly remember holding hands during the national anthem before each game a tradition we started in good-hearted mockery of Notre Dame s team and when we prayed the Pater Noster loudly with the goal of freaking out our opponents, the long rides to those far away games and eating fruit under bleachers, Dan s invigorating and inspiring pep talks, bus rides to practices in the rain, the Black Dragon Fighting Society, dancing during practices, and the tears shed during and at the conclusion of the season. This team is an irreplaceable portion of my high school years, and it will forever be one of the experiences that I will think of when I Praise the Lord for small miracles!
4 European Travelers Page 4 On June 12, 2012, 31 of Covington Latin School's finest made their way to the Cincinnati International Airport to embark upon a once-in-alifetime journey to Italy, Greece, and Turkey. We did not know what would be waiting for us once we landed in Rome the next day, nor did we know what the rest of the trip would entail, but we were all incredibly excited. Thinking back to the trip now, a handful of memories stand out... our charismatic tour guide, Giuseppe..the Turkish marketplace...eating Pizza in Pompeii...a Greek dancing night... While these are only a few of the many memories to think back on, there are more important things that took place on our trip. In Italy, we toured Rome at night, made a wish at the Trevi fountain, fought lions at the Colosseum, saw Caesar's tomb in the Forum, walked through Pompeii, and ate a lot of gelato. After finally getting a good night's sleep on the night ferry to Greece, we saw many incredible ancient sights; the original olympic stadium at Olympia, the Acropolis in Athens, and even the tomb of Agamemnon in Mycenae. The rest of our adventure in Greece included a nice stroll down nearly 600 stairs in Santorini, a surprisingly nice cruise to 4 Mediterranean islands, and a few sea-urchin injuries on the beach Athens. We also took a small excursion to Turkey where, in Ephesus, we saw the 2nd oldest library in the world as well as the inspiration for the Nike "swoosh". We did a bit of light shopping in Kusadasi, where we had the opportunity to buy $1000 rugs, and we even found a Turkish Starbucks. If there is anything I learned on this trip, it is that Ms Tewes loves being asked "What's next?" or "What's for lunch today?", Ms Rueger likes swimming in her clothes, and Mr. Della Bella's favorite thing to do is room checks. In all seriousness, this trip was a wonderful experience and, if given the opportunity, I would do it all again. By: Hannah Cain, Class of 2012
