1 GR-RRR 8 R Wichita Pontiac Club s Monthly Publication November 2017 I hope everyone had a safe and fun Thanksgiving and Black Friday! Mom and Dad (Rita and Dan Jones) were able to take Mom s 1967 Pontiac Catalina aka Lady to Chaffee, Missouri for Thanksgiving with Dad s side. Dad s uncle tried to trade their 2013 Chevy Equinox for Mom s car. It was an easy choice haha. As Christmas is coming up quickly, please remember the less fortunate in our local communities. If you feel so inclined to donate money, clothes or your time, please remember that people will appreciate your kindness more than you know. Something as simple as a friendly smile as you re running through the store for some last minute shopping or dropping a couple of bucks into the Salvation Army s bucket will go a long way. You many not think you re doing much but you are! I ve volunteered at a couple of charities in college and it really puts things into perspective when you see how happy children are to get a simple meal or a warm coat or a present when they wouldn t have gotten one otherwise. This is the season of giving. Even if you don t donate to charity, show your family and friends how much you appreciate them. You might just be surprised at how much a simple Thank you for being a great friend can change someone s mood. Ok my PSA is over now. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

2 Had a great turnout for my homemade chili, which also made good Frito chili pie. Dessert and fixings were all good too. May need to share some recipes. We had a busy week with Levi, our grandson, turning 3, our 30th anniversary and Deanna and Matt s 3rd anniversary. Elections were held. Guess we officers are doing a good enough job to keep our club going another year. Thank you Dave C. Vice President, Russ S. Secretary, Gary G. Treasurer and Deanna R. Newsletter Editor for your continued support. And a big thank you to Les L. for all the things he does for our club. Guess I m doing a good enough job as President to not be impeached. To our club members who are Veteran s, thank you for your service. Getting things lined up for the 2018 Uprising. Half of track fee is paid and deposit is made on Expo II building for car show. Will arrange on getting second building if needed. Discussed possible changes to improve our event. Need to think of speakers for tech session. Is nice to have a break from working on Uprising, but we always think of our event and how we can make it better. Thank you, Penner s, for representing our club at the Kansas Food Bank event and giving a $50 donation from the club. Don and Janice were excited to share information on GTOAA Route 66 Street Legends Cruise. September 17-30, Looks like lots of fun. Club members need to think about joining in trip along the way or cruise to Pontiac, Illinois and then travel back home. More information can be found at: With the holiday season here, let s all remember to set our scales back 10lbs! And hope not too many Christmas trees/decorations are up before we stuff ourselves with turkey. Everyone enjoy their pumpkin pie and turkey and then the Christmas cookies and candy then don t overindulge on New Years. No December meeting. January meeting to be held at Scotch and Sirloin. 3 The November 2017 meeting started 1:22 pm. Rita provided an awesome chili lunch for the club. Rita reported that the club donated $50 to the Kansas Food Bank. Elections for club officers: Les nominated to leave all current officers in place for Motion carried. Les presented Rita with a gift card for being an outstanding president and presented the Nance s with a gift card for being members of the year. Rita announced that the banquet room at the hotel for the 2018 Uprising is not available. Discussion was made on alternate buildings, such as the convention center, as possibilities for the Friday night tech session. Deposit for the car show buildings for the 2018 Uprising is due December 31, Half the track rental is paid for. Les announced at the beginning of 2017 the club had a balance of $10,000. We went into the Uprising with a total of $13,500. And after the Uprising we were left with a balance of $12,000. Les suggested a couple of changes for next year s Uprising on payouts for the Quick 16. Further discussion has to be done when Mike Cooper is present. Rita suggested for 2018 that one person oversee club sponsors. Dave volunteered. Discussion club TV advertisement of the 2017 Uprising. The cost was $800. Dan stated that next year s cost could be up to half of that due to editing and filming already being done. Discussion was done on different advertising for the 2018 Uprising. Dan reported a new sponsor for 2018 of Redi Rad. This is a company that makes your classic car radio MP3 and Bluetooth active. No club meeting to be held in December. January meeting to be held a Scotch and Sirloin. Please RSVP to Dave for the January meeting. Don and Janice announced that they are co-chairs of the GTOAA Rout 66 Tour September 17-30, This is to start in Pontiac, Illinois, and will end in Needles, California. Janice handed out details and day-by-day agenda of the tour. Details can be found in the GTOAA Legends website under Street Legends Tour. Les adjourned the meeting at 2:15 Minutes by Russ S.

4 We just finished driving the Western portion of Route 66 from Edmond, Oklahoma to San Bernardino, California. Parts of it we have driven several times, but was only the second time for the Arizona-California portion. We had already planned on doing a trip this fall, but after a conversation with Tom Oxler at GTOAA Nationals this summer, we had another reason to do the drive. It was a scouting trip for a tour that will take place next year. Tom is planning a Route 66 Street Legends Tour for all Pontiac enthusiasts. Here is the text of the ad that ran in the October Smoke Signals. All Pontiac enthusiasts are invited to join the GTOAA for their 2018 Route 66 Street Legends Tour. The tour departs Pontiac, Illinois (right after the Pontiac-Oakland Museum s All Pontiac Cruise and Show, September 15-16, 2018) on September 17, 2018 and ends on September 30 in Needles, California. The tour will cover 1,700 miles and many of the most famous and historic Route 66 landmarks. This is a free event. Do the entire tour, or join in and jump off any place you like. We will be assisting Tom and Terrie Oxler leading the tour next September. The itinerary is being finalized and will be shared on the GTOAA website. There will be a host hotel and a secondary one listed for each stop. Everyone will be responsible for making their own reservations. We will be staying in some of the most historic hotels on the route including the Munger Moss, Blue Swallow, El Rancho and WigWam. Many of these are very small and will sell out quickly. Most days will be between miles per day which will allow plenty of stops to see the sights. If anyone is interested in driving the tour, contact us and we will share the information we have vailable for dates and hotels. We would love to have some of our club members drive at least part of it with us. Missouri and Oklahoma have some of the best drivable miles on the route. Here are a few pics from our latest trip. 5 Once again our family thanks members of our GTO Club for their help during our poker run last month. At the Dead Cow Airport, it turned out that our 1957 Starchief had a burned up spark plug and would barely run. Apparently Sam Nance always carries extra spark plugs with him and Dan Jones had the tools, and that fixed us up for awhile. HOWEVER, on our way home from the nifty Kansas Motorcycle Museum in Marquette, we lost our motor. We are very thankful for the club members who stopped along I-35 to see what help was needed. Sam and Jean Nance graciously ended up taking Eleanor Hall and Jennifer Seymour home. We are so glad that we purchased the roadside assistance program through Hagerty Insurance just last year, and their very capable driver was on the scene within an hour and towed the car to our lot, where it s in the process of being repaired. When Ray took the motor apart, he found two broken pistons and a broken rod on the back two cylinders. Looks like the other six pistons are okay. He says he ll likely need a crank shaft, but doesn t know yet. As a side note, unbeknownst to anyone except Jim, he was in a hurry to get home in order to carry out his planned proposal to Jenn later in the evening (She said yes!) Eleanor Hall
